livelihood last Friday morning as flames, pushed
by 70 mph winds (115 km) raced through his barn
complex levelling it in a few hours. Total loss was
set at nearly $100,000 and Mr. Roberts was only
partially insured. (photo by Milvena Erickson)
Maitland and the 16th newt

Things just can't run
smoothly in this corner of
Goderich Township it
seems. Someone is being
hospitalized or a "bug" is
putting a lot of people in
bed. It is one thing after
another and now we have
a fire to add to the list of
troubles.
Things can look bad but
usually it could be worse.
Such was the case
Thursday night when the
Jones' home was on fire.
The neighbours who tried
to help felt rather
helpless when the smoke
drove them out and there
was nothing they could do
but wait for the Clinton
fire truck to come. It was
a short wait. The best
help one could ask for
was those brave firemen
who acted beyond the call
of duty and somehow
managed to get the
flames under control and
get the fire out. Minutes
` counted and it was a
matter of minutes that
made the difference.
A wise investment was
made when the townships
purchased the tanker
truck and it is very
reassuring to know
Goderich tanker truck
can assist when needed.
We were all holding our
breath..as the wild roaring
wind was blowing in the
wrong direction if the fire
didn't get put out. The
a
last thing we needed was
two homes burning.
By the time the paper is
out Alvin and Linda
should be settled into
their temporary home, a
house trailer, and can
make the big decision on
what to do. They have lost
a lot of things but at least
they are safe and they
can save a lot of their
things.
The community has a

up the sun.
Norene Tebbutt and
Marilyn Forbes took a
week off and. flew to
Orlando Florida where it
was nice and warm. They
spent time touring Disney

Bill and I spent three
days in Toronto recently
attending the Ontario

Association Convention.
We stayed at the
Sheraton Centre which is
a beautiful place.
Swimming in an outdoor,
heated pool at 8 a.m.I is
quite a bit, different than
basking in the sun in
Florida. It seemed
strange to watch the. ice
