Dunsmore Children learn about vandalism On Monday, April 2nd, •the Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Scouts met at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. The Group Committee and leaders had arranged for Constable Bill Wilson, Mr. Barry, Foster, Mrs. Peggy Menzies and John Fenn to join us as speakers for the evening. Constable Wilson of the Goderich detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police showed us a film on vandalism entitled "The Boy Who Liked Deer". From this film we hoped the children learned what damage to a person's property and their. feelings, vandalism. does. We saw a boy who was causing a lot of damage to other people's property, and thought this a great lot of fun. He saw what great hurt he had caused when his friend's broke into a feed shed for the deer he helped to look after and caused them to be poisoned. Constable Wilson stressed the point that when the children are out just fooling around and they think that breaking windows or doing' other damage is just a prank, that they had better stop and think. Think how they would feel if someone deliberately damaged something that they loved. Barry Foster of Community and Social Services of Stratford was our next speaker. He is a probation officer and told us the punishment that the boys in the film could have received. He told the children that if they see their friends or anyone else doing something wrong, that they should report it to the police, and said that a child as young .as ten can be charged and be put in care. We also learned that probation means having a curfew and not being allowed to play with another child. John Fenn of Huron District Scout Council was our next speaker. He stressed the point of always helping others by telling us a story about Baden Powell. He also stressed the Parent participation needed The Parent's Com- mittee for Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Scouts met on Sunday, April 1st at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. We decided instead of forming a registered group 'we would hold these meetings as our Group Committee meetings. We still hope to have parent par- ticipation, and feel that we need the parent's support for new ideas and to get their feelings on our endeavours. We had a very short meeting and planned a pop, bottle drive for the four groups for April 28th at 10 a.m. We would appreciate the com- munities support but we would ask you to not to donate bottles to the children unless they are in uniform. This is due to the fact that there have been problems in town with children soliciting funds, who were not members of the organized groups. We also decided to inquire about being allowed to sell sparklers Public school news On Monday, March 5, 21 children registered for next year's kindergarten. The last speaker for the evening was Peggy Menzies of the Guiding Movement, who had everyone doing exercises to get our blood cir- culating again. She then talked on all the things Brownies and Guides do, such as knitting, and quilting. She stressed that guiding gets girls ready to become homemakers.
