At Legion
Black holds
lone hands
By Rene Brochu
Last Tuesday evening,
the Legion was again
busy with our regular
men's euchre night. A
few leading positions
changed hands, except
for Comrade Harold
Black, who holds the
most lone hands for the
season with 66. Howie
Grealis still holds the
high score department
with 74.9 closely followed
by Bill Grigg and Babe
Finch who have 73.5
scores.
The Tuesday evening
winner with a high score
of 87 was Wat Webster
and the low score of 41
was obtained by Mel
Webster, a day for the
Websters. Comrade
Graham Yeats and Tom
Feeney were all tied up at
five for the most lone
hands for the evening.
Thursday was another
active night as the bingo
teams were again at work
obtaining dividends for
our branch. The $200
jackpot, which goes
every week was won by
Pat Shaw from Blyth
area.
Our dart club was also
active Thursday evening
in our lower lounges, with
the pairs prize being won
by Comrade Joe Atkinson
and Rosemary Arm-
strong. The men's high
single score of 140 was
obtained by Bud Schmidt
and the ladies' high single
score of 101 went to
Comrade Annie Sallows.
The dart club was also
represented at the Huron
County Dart League
playoffs in the Goderich
Legion on Saturday
March 24th. Although our
representatives • were
unsuccessful in the
singles and doubles
playoffs in Goderich, they
have great hopes of being
more successful in the
team playoffs,in Brussels
next Saturday. We all join
in by wishing our dart
tearris every success.
Our Friday TGIF
evening was again a
pleasant experience for
our patrons, as one of our
regular members,
Comrade Walter Snary
won the first raffle prize,
and Marg Switzer won
the second prize. The
attendance draw this
week was won by
Comrade Len Arnston
and he'll no doubt be
happy with his winnings,
so Comrades we now
start over at zero once
again.
Our In Memorium for
the week is for Comrade
Alf Scotchmer, who
passed away last
Thursday. A Legion
service was held on
Saturday evening at the
Ball Funeral Home with a
goodly number of Legion
Members present. The
Legion members were
led in prayer by
Reverend James
Broadfoot. May we all
pause for a moment and
remember Comrade Alf
in our daily prayers.

Another time, I saw
him break his big toe. By
design, not by accident.
He had had five
`blowouts in ten miles.
That was in the days
when your tube blew out,
you had to jack Op the
car, take off the wheel,
extract tube from tire,
patch the tube, and go
through the whole
process in reverse.
After the fourth time,
the air pump, hand
operated, refused to
function. He calmly stood
back, looked the whole
operation over, and tried
to 'kick the entire ap-
paratus, wheel rim, tire,
tube and air pump, over
the nearest fence. He
collapsed with a groan,
and my mother, who was
an excellent engineer and
repairwoman, as is my
wife had to wait for the
next motorist to help out,
while my Dad lay in the
back seat, muttering
through his teeth words
that I have since learned
are palliative to such a
situation. •
So it ain't my fault. It's
the genes.
