Heart saver ?914!'x` courses set Heart disease is the largest single killer in North America, but a person suffering a coronary attack has an excellent chance of surviving if help arrives within the first four Minutes. That "excellent chance" explains the importance of teaching cardio -pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), according to `Kieran Ballah of Fergus. - Ballah is co-ordinator of the Continuing Education CPR courses which are offered at the Cambridge, Clinton, Doon, Guelph and Stratford campuses of Conestoga College. .He said the CPR courses have met the needs of the "target group" since they started last year. The target group includes emergency personnel and professional and para- professional medical personnel such as fire, police and ambulance workers, dental assistants, lab technicians and registered nursing assistants. In some fire and police departments, all personnel were enrolled in the courses. "This course could be of interest to everyone. It is of special interest to those close to someone with heart problems," Ballah said, although he discouraged people with coronary problems themselves from taking the course. Applicants must complete a medical questionnaire and meet certain medical con- ditions ' before being accepted into the course. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate ' from the Ontario Heart Foun- dation. This certificate is subject to renewal after testing every year. New this year is the five-hour Heart Saver course, designed for large-scale public education, Ballah said. Part of the course is designed to impart in- formation about a healthy lifestyle and about how to recognize a coronary attack. The other part teaches par- ticipants the basic motor skills of resuscitation and the CPR procedure to the satisfaction of an in- structor. A Heart Saver certificate is awarded by the Heart Foundation but it need not be renewed. "If everyone became involved, we could make our community as safe as Seattle - which is slip - posed to be the safest place in North America to have a heart attack," Ballah said. As well as being Supervisor of Fergus District Ambulance Service and a CPR in- structor, Ballah teaches for the Red Cross Society, St. John Ambulance and the Ontario Heart Foundation. Before that he was a dialysis technician at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton. For dates and times or for more information about CPR courses, contact Continuing education at the Cam- ---bridge, Clinton, Doon, Guelph and Stratford campuses of Conestoga College. Heart Saver is offered only at the noon and Guelph campuses. `SAVE 50A A Superb Blend, Rich in Brazilian Coffees. Custom Ground in the Store When You Buy It ...
