The Toronto News, alluding to
the question of Commercial Union,
says :—
" Canadian merchants and manufactur-

prising, intelligent and skilful as their
American rivals, and are not disposed to
admit their inability to hold their own
against them under equal conditions."
While admitting that Canadian
Manfacturers are enterprising, in-

that were Commercial Union

their own with the larger manufac•

that are more extensive than ours
(and they are numerous) could un-

in favor of the scheme was carried. Now secure all we desire, or think we

many quarters besides the U. S. ?
The people of Manitoba. Pubhc
speakers and the press openly con-
tended, that the people of the pro•
vince would rise in rebellion against
the Dominion Government, if Pro-
vincial rights were questioned ; that
the rebellion would have a different
ending to the one headed by Riel ;
chat Canadian volunteers would
sooner throw down their arms than
fight against their friends and rela-

out British troops, the Manitobans
would at once seek admission to the
United States.
The joint commission chosen to
undertake the final adjustment of
the tedious and protracted conten-

is composed of highly competent
