HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1979-03-22, Page 17• • Varna busy with events and Dana's return BY -MARY CHESSELL A tribute to St. Patrick's Day was provided at Friday night's Orange Lodge card party with toe - tapping, hand -clapping Irish music played by Mary Broadfoot at the piano. A big crowd, enough for 15 tables, attended. Fern Baker of Bayfield won the high score for ladies, Mildred McAsh was low. Men's high went to Bill Rogerson of Hensall, low to John Ostrom. Draw prize winners were cliff Utter of Bayfield, Bernice Reid and Darryn and Krista McAsh. There will be another card party on the 30th. Craig McAsh; Brian and Joan's little boy, had surgery in Clinton hospital on Friday and returned home on Saturday. We hope he'll soon be feeling great again. Bill and Eleanor McAsh spent the weekend with Mr, and Mrs. Arnold Rathwell of Port Elgin. Dog returns Ruby Hill's dog, Dana, - was featured in a front in a starving condition, page story in the Seaforth Expositor last week. Frightened by a gunshot in January, she had been seen heading south. Ads in the Zurich and Exeter papers brought no results, .and Gordon and Ruby assumed she was dead. Several weeks after her disappearance, 'Bev attended a meeting at Ken and Joan Campbell's home near Winthrop, and there was Dana. She had arrived a month earlier and since they had no dog, they had decided to keep her. Ruby will be grateful to have her back, as she valued her corn panion sh ip. Mack Webster is getting around a bit on the leg he broke awhile ago, now .that he has it in a short Gast. Crokinole is a game that isn't played as much as in years past, but a local hostess who en- tertained a large group of friends Saturday night decided it would be a change from the usual The weather was perfect, and the sap was running full tilt. as the Bayfield Beaver Pack took a tour of McClymont's sugar bush last Saturday. An evening of music, song and dance, presented by several talented young local people, in aid of U.N.I.C.E.1., promises to be well worth at- tending. Jim Lawrie will M.C. the show, which featuresperformers of such high caliber as Danny Lear, Kim Craig, Darlene Wesselink and many others. 'The variety night had originally • been` designated as a fund- raising night by Blyth Centre for the Arts to help out in financing the summer program. 1l-iowever, as this is the International Year of the Child, the directors decided to turn over all profits to U.N.I.C.E.F. as part of this community's contribution to the needs of ccil'dren• -'elswhere. Wat Webster again had the pleasure of playing his mouth organ for Mrs. Adella Fisher, who celebrated her 106 bir- thday on Saturday at Seaforth Manor. This is the third year in a row that Wat has been present CLINTONNEWS-RECORD, THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 1979—PAGE 17 to entertain "Sammie", a tiny woman and blind, and Wat says he'll con- tinue to play for her "until the ship goes dawn" (as long as they are both alive). When she was a young woman, Wat says, she walked from Dashwood to Zurich daily to cook in the hotel, then walked home again at the end of the day. She had 13 children, six of whom are still living. The Bayfield Beavers and Cubs enjoyed a visit to McAsh's sugar bush on Saturday morning to see them making maple syrup. A sleigh -ride behind Tom Rathwell's beautiful team of Belgians added en- joyment to the trip. The weather was just perfect for their outing, too. R.K.
