Another game for Sailors
BY DAVE SYKES
With the help of a
couple goalposts, some
fine goaltending and a bit
of crucial back up in the
nets by Ken Meriam the
Goderich Sailors forced a
seventh and deciding
game in their series with
Mildmay.
The Sailors tied the
series 2-2 with a 4-1 home
ice win Wednesday but
then fell behind 3-2 with a
6-4 loss in Mildmay,
Friday.
Facing elimination
Sunday the Sailors rallied
from a 3-1 deficit after
two periods scoring three
times in the final 20
minutes to escape with a
4-3 victory and force the
deciding game of the
division final series.
The final game of that
series was played in
Mildmay, Wednesday
with the winner to meet
the victors in the
Dresden -Wheatley series.
The Sailors evened the
series at two games
apiece with a 4-1 win in
Goderich last Wed-
nesday. The game was a
dull, tight checking affair
that the Sailors led 1-0
after one period, 2-1 after
two and then wrapped
with two goals in the final
period.
Jim Hayter scored for
Goderich in the first
period and Ron Sowerby
scored in the second to
regain the Sailor one goal
bulge after Mildmay tied
the game early in the
period.
Pul Kelly and Grant
Shelton scored third
period goals for
Goderich.
Mildmay regained the
series lead in game five
with a four -goal effort in
the final period to dump
the Sailors 6-4. The teams
were tied 2-2 after two
periods of play but
Mildmay outscored
Goderich 4-2 in the final
period.
Kevin Meriam, Dan
Duncan, Paul Kelly and
Ken Meriam scored the
Goderich goals.
The Sailors nearly hung
up their skates for the
season Sunday as they
trailed 3-1 after two
periods but played a fine
period of hockey in the
final 20 minutes scoring
three times to steal the
win, 4-3.
Rick Fremlin got the
Sailors right back in the
game early in th third
period sliding a
backhander into the
corner of the net to
narrow the Mildmay lead
to 3-2. It was Fremlin's
second goal of the game.
Just two minutes later,
«Paul Kelly took a Duncan
pass on a two -on -one
situation and blasted a
shot into the top corner of
the net from a difficult
angle, to tie the score 3-3.
But the win didn't come
easy for the Sailors. They
had to kill a number of
penalties in the final
period but won the game
on a goal by Duncan at
13.58. Duncan poked in a
rebound from close range
after a shot from the
point by Sowerby was
batted around the crease
area.
Ken Meriam saved the
game in the final period
when he was forced to
play goal for Juergen
Hellman who vacated his
post to clear an errant
puck.
Hellman,who went half
way to the blueline to
clear the puck, failed in
his attempt and put the
puck on a Mildmay stick.
Meriam covered the net
and blocked the shot
while on his knees and
managed to sweep the
puck into the corner while
in a prone position on the
ice.
Clinton hockey ends,
Midgets out of play
The hockey season is over in Clinton, as the Midgets
who were the last play-off hope for the town, lost 8 - 2 in
the second game of their best of three play-off series
against Wiarton last Monday night.
Steve Lobb scored both goals for Clinton, who were
coming off a long break, and really didn't get unwound
until late in the second period when it was too late.

like to thank all the boys and everyone who helped
with the team this year.
