The"Spring Thaw" has
arrived early this year
and consequently, most
of our snow banks have
disappeared, a welcomed
sight for most.
Tuesday night men's
euchre was cancelled last
week so that we could
hold our annual branch
public speaking contest
for our area school
students. Garnet
Harland, who organized
the contest, was elated
not only with the quality
of the speeches and the
expertise of presentation,
but also with the at-
tendance and interest
displayed by the Clinton
and area people. Our
thanks to the six judges,
to timekeeper Harold
Black and to
stenographer Kaye Pyke
and many other members
for 'having so willingly
donated their time and
effort towards the suc-
cess of the contest.
Our president John
Semple presented the
trophies to the winners
and prizes to all the other
contestants. An ap-
preciative thank -you to
our Comrade Garnet
Harland for, once again,
using his far reaching
acclaimed talents in
organizing this annual
Branch Public Speaking
Contest for the benefit of
our area school students.
Our Thursday evening
bingo was, for the second
week in a row, a suc-
cessful venture with two
of our regular patrons,
Dorothy Thompson and
Judy Dykstra sharing the
$200 jackpot prize. Dart
league members were
also active in our lower
lounges with Doug
Mclsaac and Annie
Sallows winning the pairs
competition. High men's
single score was. obtained
by Chess Higdon with 120
points, and the ladies
high score was obtained
by Doris Chambers with
9.7, ppints. The Branch is
looking forward to
another Huron ;County
Dart competition on
Ma rcl"0.
Our sport's chairman
was lucky last Friday
evening as he won the
TGIF raffle prize, and
I'm sure he and Marg will
enjoy the winnings. Our
attendance draw went
unclaimed as J. K. Wilson
had failed to register, s'
now 'our "pot" once
again is growing into a
substantial amount and
will be available to those

Our condolences to the
family of Comrade Frank
Fulch.er, who passed
away at Victoria Hospital
in London. A Legion
service took place on
Wednesday evening of
this week at the Ball
Funeral Home. The
funeral service will take
place on Thursday af-

the relatives and friends
of the family.
Easter Seals now out
About970 area
residents should have
received their Easter
Seals in the mail now,wwith
the launching of this
year's annual appeal by
the Lions Club of Clinton.
The campaign period
runs this year from
March 5 until Easter
Sunday, April 15 by which
time the club hopes to
have raised $1,350 as its
share of the overall
provincial objective of
$3,000,000.
For the past month,
club members and their
friends have been busily
engaged in stuffing and
addressing envelopes in
preparation for this very
special event.
The message that
accompanies these seals
urges people to back a
'fighter with their
donation.
Last year, response to
the club's efforts brought
in $1,247.00 to help
parents of physically
handicapped children
with the cost of
wheelchairs, braces,
artificial limbs, summer
camping, transportation
and special rehabilitation
treatment programs.
"As a member of the
Ontario Society for
Crippled Children, our
club has been serving
handicapped youngsters
in the Clinton and
Brucefield area for the
past 28 years, "said
campaign chairman
Tony Van Zon . "We
believe in the potential of
these youngsters and in
their fight for a better
chance in life. That's why
we're asking people to
back these youngsters
with their Easter Seal
donations".
Anyone who fails to
,receive their Easter Seal
appeal can still help by
sending their tax
deductible donations to
Easter Seal Fund,'Clintdn
