Clinton News-Record, 1979-03-08, Page 18i PAGE 18--CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, MARCH 8 , 1979 04) central huron chronicle e ,richard browh editor , secondory schoo news Filling in the spaces by Rick Brown Asa you can see, this week's paper is lacking in quantity. They, my staff, left me to do sbme writing for once, but what can I write about? Actually there are plenty of topics. The problem is which one. I could write about exams. Exams, now there is a relevant topic. On the other hand, most students probably do not want to hear anything more about that subject. Who, in their right mind, wants to take a break from studying, turn to their favorite page, and read about exams? No that topic is definitely not it. What about school projects? Not really. That subject is in the same boat as exams and sinking fast. Let's see, there are "Oil Prices in Iran", "The China - Vietnam Conflict" or "What Will You Do On Your Holidays?" No, those topics are above a mere student's intellect. 'An Expose of the school. Yeah! I will write about how the teachers drink glue, the janitors sniff alcohol and the students smoke up. The story will be very in- volved telling how and why the mideast strife is driving up the cast of grade 13 books, that the communists are the cause of grade niners, and that this school is very fascist! Didn't you know? What a write-up it would be! Unfortunately I do not think that many people would take me seriously. Oh well. I could write about apathy in the school, but that is boring and I am too tired to be bothered with that subject. Maybe next time I will think of an article. Half back from Wintario Beginning May 1, Wintario ticket buyers will be able to take ad- vantage of a new Half Back Program. Non - winning Wintario tickets will be worth 50 cents each for a maximum ,,,discount of $2 off Canadian record albums and at least 50 percent off the price of admission to see Canadian feature films. In announcing details of the new program, Minister of Culture and Recreation, Reuben Baetz stated, "The new Half Back will be the largest public promotion ever undertaken in Canada on behalf of Canadian film and recording talent. We believe that the discount incentive will encourage greater awareness and appreciation of Canadian achievements in these important cultural in- dustries."' Half Back is an exciting new concept in arts support introduced by the ministry last . year for books and magazines. During the 12 weeks of that promotion., the public purchased hun- dreds of thousands of books and magazines using the Half Back discount. The new Half Back for films and records will run for five months from May 1 to September 30. Both film and recor- ding industries have endorsed the program. According to Brian Robertson, President of the Canadian Recording Industry Association, "In our opinion, this is the most innovative concept ever devised in (terms of introducing the talents of Canadian recording artists .to. -. a wider Canadian audience". There are currently over 1,000 Canadian performers and com- posers with record albums and tapes on the market and the public will be able to use the Half Back discount in an estimated 350 par- ticipating record stores throughout the province. David Perlmutter, President, Canadian Association of Motion Picture Producers is also excited by the program. "We look upon Half Back as a fine way to en courage Ontario film goers to become familiar with and.appreciate, even more than they may now, the wide range :and depth of Canadian -lam talent" he said. An unprecedented number of new Canadian feature films are currently being produced and many of them will be ready for release this summer. It is expected that Half Back will be of significant promotional benefit to them in building Ontario audiences. The discount should also encourage theatres to screen more of the existing Canadian films that have not yet been shown in some parts of Ontario. Close to 300 theatres and ,. ,l,1/e-ins have been invited to participate in the program. Half Back enables the Ministry of Culture and Recreation to refund the proceeds of Wintario directly to the public. It is an exciting new dimension to the Ministry's Wintari& grants program. Smile "It's easy enough to make friends," said the disgruntled man, "but it's hard to keep them." "Oh, I don't know," replied his wealthy acquaintance. , "I find that nearly all my friends are satisfied to let me keep them". DearAnnie dislikes poet's attempts to praise her Dear Annie: This letter is dedicated to you alone. There was this advisor named Annie Who spent every day on her fanny Wrote advice to the rest, Became quite a big pest, Yet impressed with her answers so canny. Any implied com- pliment is not intentional, and any resemblance to a compliment is purely coincidental. Signed, The Unknown Poet Dear Poet: With verses like that, you'd better stay unknown! Phew! Dear Annie: Is it hard for somebody to ' become an advice columnist? Do you need an especially nosy manner, or just plain no manners? Do you have to have the nerve to insult everybody's intelligence at a word? Do you have to have the imagination of a parakeet and the temper of a snapping turtle? Is it really necessary that you have all the winsome attractiveness of a slug at the bottom of a stack of cafeteria french fries, and the sense of humour of a constipated duck? Or is it just that you are a variation from the norm? Please .. tell me Annie, before I classify all ad- vice columnists with the likes of you. A Clinical Observer Dear Clinical: Tell me, is it hard to be a clinical observer? Do you need an exceptionally rude manner, or no manners at all? Do you have to have the nerve to insult everybody at a word by placing your intelligence above theirs? Do you have to have the imagination of a rabid serverr" rat and the pleasant, ingratiating manner of a boa con- strictor with halitosis? Do you really, need to have the pleasant, good looks of a baboon with an overdose of Ex-Lax, and the sense of humour of a CHSS curlers second in WOSSA Thanks to a _strong showing in the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (WOSSA) championships in London last Saturday, the curling team from Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS) in Clinton just missed going to the Ontario finals in Windsor later this month. The CHSS t 'nm of Brian Falconer, vice; Dave Townsend, second; Bill Gibson, skip; and John Coleman, lead, along with teacher -coach John Brow'nridge, finished second at the WOSSA finals behind the Glencoe Clinton beat the favored , Parkside Secondary School team from St. Thomas 4-3 in the first game, and downed North Lambton 7- 4 in the second game, before succumbing to Glencoe 3-2 in a close championship game. The Clinton team had qualified for WOSSA by easily winning the Huron title, and finishing second in the Huron -Perth finals behind Stratford Nor- thwestern. Through the other weeklies The Exeter Times - Advocate reported that the Exeter and District Heritage Foundation are planning a celebrity aurtinn Bruce Shaw, chairman of the local group said that the auction will have items for sale from celebrities of local, national and in- ternational significance. Although no date for the special auction has been set, Mr. Shaw noted that several items have already been received. Progress on the restoration of the town hall itself is almost complete, with the ex- ception of a few decorative items while work on the clock's restoration is being done by a local jeweller. The foundation group hopes in some way, to recognize all the in- dividuals who ' helped maintain the old building and make it into historic establishment. +++ Small commercial users, apartments and residential homes will face a 15 per cent in- crease in their water rates starting April 1 in Listowel. Midget basketball Last Tuesday, Feb. 27, our Midget Redmen, coached by Mr. Clynick, went to the Huron -Perth tournament. They lost their 'first game and were forced into the consolation round, where they beat Wingham 42-40 and qualified for the final against Norwell. CHSS was defeated 47- 32 in a much closer game than the last time these two, teams met. This is the best a midget team has done since the '74-'75 team was defeated by eight points in their consolation final against St. Marys. Congratulations to all the players, and ' Mr. Clynick for a reasonably successful season. Bed cutbacks hurt Wingham According to the ad- ministrator at the Wingham and District Hospital, the removal of 14 beds from their in- stitute will cost 10 'to 15 fulltime equivalent jobs. The Wingham Advance -Times noted that the staff cutbacks have not been finalized and rather than massive layoffs, the hospital will convert fulltime jobs to part time, leaving part time employees with less hours. Hospital administrator Norman Hayes told the Advance -Times that the layoffs wouldn't be restricted to the nursing staff, but would go right across the board. He noted that housekeeping, cafeteria, even lab and administration em- ployees might face the burden of the bed cut- backs.
