Clinton News-Record, 1979-03-01, Page 2PAGE 2 —CLINTON NEWS:RECORD, THUR. DAY, MARC -I 1 ,1979
As a service to the
community the News -
Record will be main-
taining an entertainment
"super calendar for
coming events, mounted
on the wall at the office on
Albert Street.
The purpose of the
calendar is for church
groups, service clubs,
youth organizations,
schools etc., to phone in a
date which they wish
reserved. The date will
then be noted under the
appropriate calendar
date. Should the date
already have been taken
they will be duly notified.
The News -Record was
approached to give this
entertainment register a
chance to prove its worth.
So by the beginning of
next week any interested
parties are invited to
drop in and see what we
have to offer, it will be
ready should any group
wish to avail themselves
of this service.

This is March 1 and it
signals the start of Red
Cross Month in Canada.
Red Cross is such a
household word, perhaps
many of us take it for
granted. The following
excerpt kindly forwarded
to my desk has taught me
something I did , not
know :
"What have 1.8 million
Canadian Red Cross
volunteers brought to
commemorate the 150th
birthday party of Red
Cross founder Henry
Dunant?
They have brought
wheelchairs and crutches
to support the work of the
Red Cross sickroom and
Loan Equipment service.
They have made quilts
through the Red Cross
A.I.D. (Assistance
International and
Domestic) service to be
sold to raise money for
international aid.
First aiders, and water
safety experts have
worked to gain cer-
tificates of proficiency in
saving lives,
memorabilia of effort
training and ultimately
achievement. Red Cross
homemakers have given
skills and loving care to
help keep body, mind,
spirit and home together
when illness struck.
Henry Dunant died
almost 68 years ago, but
his birthday party is
celebrated every year by
two hundred million
volunteers around the
world.
Starting March 1 the
Clinton area chapter will
be conducting a house to
house canvass for funds.
Roy Wheeler of Clinton,
who is chairman of this
district, which includes
Clinton, Vanastra, Varna
Blyth and Bayfield, says
that nearly $9,000 was
raised last year and if
that feat can be repeated
again this year, then the
area office would plow
half those funds back into
the area.

The following press
release has been received
for publication:
"I give you Me."
' Don't forget the adult
education which is being
provided for people'bf all
faiths at St. Joseph's
Church, James Street,
Clinton this Lent. - for the
purpose of "Enriching
the Martiage and
Family."
This week's speaker
will be Mr. Mike
Tremblay. Mike is a
married man with a
family and has worked
for the Marriage Courts
approximately
years.
He will talk on what is
good and what is bad in a
marriage and why it is an
"endangered species."
The Lenten service will
commence on Sunday
evening, March 4 at 8
p.m. after which a
discussion will be held in
the church basement.
We understand that
these special Lenten
discussions were both
very popular and very
well received in the
community last year
and evidently promise to
be the same this year.

St. Joe's school
wants addition
Members of lthe
Catholic Parents Teacher
Association (CPTA)
intend to pursue their
attempts to get: an ad-
dition to St. Joseph's
School in Clinton.
Despite a gloomy view
from the Ministry of
Education, the CPTA are
still optimistic and have
put this into effect with
their second plan of
action.
On February 16, the
CPTA visited the
Precious Blood Separate
School in Exeter. They
examined the permanent
addition of portables to
the school. •
At a special meeting of
the CPTA on February 21,
they agreed to ask the
Huron-PPrth SPparatp
School Board for a
similar addition to the
Clinton school on Beech
Street.
The addition would
include four portable
classrooms, attached to
the existing structure. It
is- felt ° that this would
create a more valuable
school concept.
The ways and means
committee discussed
fund raising plans for
proper playground
equipment and it was
decided that various
groups and fraternities
would be approached for
their financial support.
'A lunch followed the
meeting. The next
meeting will be held on
Wednesday, March '.

• from page 4
examinations, I think you will find that
this bears out.
Birds with a broken band will be
found to be either females, or juvenile
males. You might be able to check this
further by using another field test.
When you shoot a grouse with a broken
band, grasp its lower beak with your
thumb and forefinger, and give it a
slight shake. If the beak breaks off, it is
a "young of the year"; if not, it is a full
adult bird. If you check by dissection,
the results using these methods, -I think
you'll find them surprisingly accurate.
They are, of course, still only field tests
and subject to variations.

Our mistake
A story in last week's
News -Record should
have said the pee wee
"B's" won the runner-up
championship at the
Mitchell tournament
recently.
The News -Record
wishes to apologize for
any inconvenience this
may have caused, as
Clinton has both an "A"
team and a "B" team.
At any rate, I would like to thank you
again for your letter. Any interest I get
in the column is greatly appreciated.
I'm plq,nning a whole series of wildlife
profiles such as this and I'm sure the
European Hare will be among them:
it's one of my favorites too. I'd
welcome any comments you might
have in the future on my column.
Thanks again, Randy, and good luck in
the future.

Steve Cooke
P.S. - Did you know the Ruffed
Grouse also has a grey and a red (or
brown) phase?
Easter Seal campaign set
This year's Easter Seal
appeal will get underway
officially on March 5,
according to campaign
chairman Tony Van Zon
of the Lions Club of
Clinton.
In announcing the start
of the six-week long
campaign iitbich runs
until Easter Sunday,
April 15, Mr. Van Zon
expressed confidence in
his club's ability•to meet
their local • objective of
$1,350.
Throughout Ontario,
236 service clubs af-
filiated with the Ontario
Society for Crippled
Children will be air -ming at
a provincial objective of
$3,000,000 needed to
maintain essential
rehabilitation services
for thousands of Ontario's
physically handicapped
children.
"I don't know if people
fully realize just how
much time and effort
goes into getting this
appeal ready each year,"
said Mr. Van Zon, "but
it's for a good cause and
our members are glad to
volunteer their time to
work on it."
Last year, residents in
the . Clinton and
Brucefield area con-
tributed $1,247 to the
appeal and chairman Van
Zon is confident that this
year's response will be
even better.
"When people receive
their appeal in the mail,"
said Van Zon, "I hope
they will do more than
just give a thought to
these youngsters. These
kids are fighters but they
heed a bit of help. That's
why we are asking
everyone to help by.
sending in their Easter
Seal donations as soon as
possible."
