(photo by Mary Chessell) Varna residents make best of , winter By Mary Chessell Ron and Jean, Jeffery and Bradley Jewitt were guests of Bill and Joyce Dowson and family on Sunday. We're glad to have Beatrice and Louis Taylor back in the village after several weeks in Clinton. Joan Beierling has been confined to St. Joseph's Hospital for the past couple of weeks and may be there for some time yet, so if any of her friends are in London, perhaps they could drop in to see her to help pass the time. George Rich, and Ross Whittaker took the village children out to Tom Rathwell's farm for a toboggan party and wiener roast on Sunday. In spite of the cold, the kids had a wonderful time. In fact, on the sheltered side of the bush it was lovely, and they stayed out for several -hours. Ron and Joyce Taylor hosted a fish dinner last Wednesday for the gang that went ice fishing and their wives. The fishermen were Ron, Barry and Don Taylor, Allan Hayter, Bill Dowson and Fred Van- derhaar, who caught a fish that dressed out at 121,7 lbs. Hensall club news by Bertha MacGregor United church notes Rev. T. Garnet Husser conducted service in Hensall United Church on Sunday -- his sermon was "Giants in the Way". Mrs. Mary Moffatt presided at the .organ and the choir sang "My Song Is Lord Unknown". Bible Study hour will be held in the choir room of the church on Thursday evening February 22 at 7 p.m. Village social notes Miss Robyn McLellan of Kippen passed Grade 7 piano of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Mr: and Mrs. Bert Horton spent the weekend at the home of their gon and daughter-iln-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Horton and family, Clinton. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Holland, Gwen and Michael of Clinton were recent visitors with Mr. and Mrs. James Sangster and Brad. UCW meet Mrs. Harry Hoy opened the February meeting of Unit 2 .o Hensall UCW with a poem "God Knows Best". Mrs. Ron Mock presented the topic on "Human Rights," choosing the chapter about the native people of Canada. Each member read a portion of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Mrs. Gerstenkorn conducted the business and Mrs. Ron Wareing was in charge of the devotional using as her theme, "The Praying Hands". Mrs. Hoy in- troduced Mrs. William Fink who displayed and explained many in- teresting crafts. Following this, a social hour was enjoyed by all. Crokinole social Rev. Kenneth Knight conducted the service in Carmel Presbyterian Church on Sunday - the sermon being "Training for the Christian's Race." Mrs. Taylor presided at the piano. The choir is sponsoring a "crokinole social" on February 23 at 8 p.m. in the school room. Everyone young and old is invited to this social evening. WMS entertained Mrs. Malcom Dougall was hostess on Tuesday afternoon for the WMS Carmel Presbyterian Church with the president Mrs. Harvey Hyde presiding and opened with a meditation on "guidance". Mrs. C. Volland was in charge of the program assisted by Mrs. M. Dougall -- using an article from the Glad Tidings on an Interview with Paul Chan. The Synodical will be held in Knox Presbyterian Church Goderich April 10 and 11 - further plans will be made regarding it. The World Day of Prayer service will be held in Carmel Church Friday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m. when Rev. T. Garnet Husser will be the guest' speaker. A letter of thanks was read from the Queensway Nursing Home. Members were reminded to save Zehrs checkout slips in support of the dock at Camp Kintail. The March meeting will be in charge of Mrs. R. Faber. Mrs. C. Volland presided for .the meeting of the Ladies' Aid which followed and discussed routine business. Following this a social hour was enjoyed. 4-H meets The second meeting of the 4-H Club "The End Results" was held at the home of Mrs. Ger- stenkorn on Tuesday, February 13th at 7 p.m: The officers are: president, Starr Jesney; vice-president, Linda Zwaan; treasurer, Linda Gerstenkorn; secretary, Laurie Pepper; press reporter, Patty Lenting; leader, Mrs. Ger- stenkorn; assistant leader, Sandra Nixon. Visitors at Queensway By Bertha MacGregor Visitors last week with Russell Brratt were Perc and Clara Johnston, Bill Helen, Cathie and Mark Taylor, George and Olive Stephenson, Noreen Hayter, Julene Keyes, Elmer and Margaret Stephenson. Chester and Ilia Dunn visifed Vera Lammie; Mrs. Hazel Snell and Les Mitchell visited Louise Mitchell; and Elaine Baynham, E.J.. Hogarth, and Audrey Zachar visited Dora Hogarth and Louise Mitchell. Mrs. Florence Hoelscher was visited by her husband John; Mrs. Vivian' Alderson was visited by her •husband Roy and daughter Mable Alderson; and 'Don Rozendal visited his wife Alice Rozendal, while -Jack Upshall and Grace Adkins visited their uncle Jim McDougall. Kippen UCW ladies visited the residents last Wednesday and en- tertained them with bingo and music, and Rev..Don Forrest conducted the church • service on Tuesday, accompanied by Louise Mitchell at the piano. Seniors meet The. "Three Links" Senior Citizens of Hensall met on Tuesday evening in the local hall with the president Mrs. • Bertha MacGregor presiding. The hall was decorated in keeping with the Valentine meeting by the Convener Mrs. Laird Mickle, who ac- companied -at ' the piano for the singing of "The Queen." Following the roll call, minutes and business, a card of .thanks was read from the Kippen East Women's Institute. A discussion took place over the anniversary of the organization and it was decided to make the April meeting which is to be a smorgasbord supper at 6:30 pm the "an- niversary meeting" which is to be arranged by the executive. The March meeting will be held as usual with the entertainment committee Mr. and Mrs. Harold Parker and Mr. Elgin Rowcliffe. The social committee is Mr. and Mrs. Bert Horton and Mrs. Annie'Reid. Progressive euchre -was played with following prize winners: ladies' high, Mrs. Ruby Bell; gent's high, Clarence Volland; lone hands, Mrs. Madeline Harburn; door prize, Mrs. Alice Ferg; lucky cup, Elgin Rowcliffe. The entertainment committee was Mrs. Laird Mickle, Mrs. Edgar Munn, Mrs. Gertie Moir - and the social committee was Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Volland and Mrs. Vera Brintnell. Miss Mabelle Whiteman passes Miss Mabelle Whiteman formerly of Kippen, died in Huron - view on Tuesday February 13th in her 96th year. She is survived by 4her niece, Miss Margaret Whiteman of Islington; nephews Paul Whiteman, Illinois; and Miller McConnell Pennsylvania. The funeral service was held from the Bon- thron Funeral Home, Hensall on Thursday February 15 with Rev. Robert McMullen of- ficiating. Burial was in Hensall Union Cemetery. Institute euchre The Hensall Women's Institute held a most successful euchre party in the Legion Hall on Valentine evening with 14 . tables in play - the hall being decorated for the occasion. The president, Mrs. Cecil Pepper and her committee were in charge. Prize winners were as follows: laides' high prize, Mrs. Elizabeth Riley; ladies' con- solation, Mrs. Leona Parke; gent's high, Mike Connolly; gent's con- solation, Brian Bowman; lone hands, Mrs. Ar McCallum; draw for a ham, -Brian Bowman; bag of sugar Mrs. Grace Drummond. A socia' followed when lunch waE served. It's the only fish hey caught, but it was plenty to feed the party of 12 and little Ben Vanderhaar. A paper in the Barrie area took a picture of the big fish. Two rinks from this area, one made up of Allan Hayter, Ross McBeath, Ross Corbett and Chester Sturdy,; the other of Bill Dowson, Barry Taylor, Gerald Hayter and Arnold Keys, competed in the Co-op Bonspiel in Exeter on Saturday. Friends and former members of Goshen United Church Women were invited to share in their potluck luncheon and meeting last Thur- sday. After a bountiful meal, life memberships were presented to Jean Armstrong and Marjorie Hayter. Pins were also presented to other life members. An excellent program on the International Year of the Child was presented. Geraldine Eckel presided for the business. A congregational bowling party is to be held on March 11. One of the former members com- mented on how pleased she was to see many younger women taking an active part in the work of UCW at Goshen. th e Some churches have very few young women in- volved in UCW, although there are quite a number at most Presbyterial ' meetings.
