It also occurs to this writer that winning curlers must eat rather well if one takes a close look at some of the prizes being taken home from bonspiels. Steaks (count them, seven!) were the second prize awarded to each team member of - the Dave Cornish rink with Ray Beattie, Neil Dolmage and Jim Rose ,at the Huron County Cat- tlemen's Association Spiel in Belmore last week. All winners in the Men's Open last Saturday took home beef as their prize - no doubt welcomed by their "curling widows" - the spiel having been sponsored by Rowcliffe Motors Ltd. jointly with Seaforth Insurance Agency. There was a full complement of rinks at the spiel with prizes in the Early Draw going down to a one -two -three sweep by Seaforth curlers. In first place: the team of Bruce McDonald, skipped by Doug Rowcliffe with Paul Storey and Ken Cardno; second, John Patterson, Sr".;.third, Glen Hayter. The consolation prize went to the Gerry Brennan rink from London. First place in the Late Draw and overall winner of the day was another Seaforth rink, skipped by Bill Campbell, with John Patterson, Jr., Neil Dolmage and Don Deighton. Second place went to Ian.. Grant of Teeswater *and third to Don Gibson of Harriston and Murray Forbes of Seaforth picked up the Consolation. Congratulations' and good eating to all winners! The girls of the Junior Curling Club were well represented by Vicki Ste. Marie, Susan Primeau, Maureen Hutchinson and Betsy Ste. Marie at the Huron High School Playdowns last week. They won both their games, over Exeter and W ingha m, and go on to represent Huron County at the Huron -Perth Playdowns this week. The team from CHSS with Bill Gibson, Brian Falconer, Dave Town- send, Ron Taylor and John Coleman as spare, won games over Goderich and Exeter and will represent the Boy's Division. Winners of the Huron -Perth Playdowns go on to championship curling. The Junior Curlers enjoyed a fun day last Sunday and entertained teams from Vanastra in friendly competition. A Vanastra team took home the first prize with. Brian Ruston's rink placing second. The Seaforth Ladies held their first fun day of the season last Tuesday, with a full turn -out of curlers, the best yet! Pat Deighton skipped the winning team with Marj Coleman, vice; Margie Allan, second; Ellen Murphy, lead. Secbnd place went to Sharon Wilson, Marg Fleming, Marg Whitmore and Marilyn Forbes. Prizes followed a Valentine's Day theme. Intermediate Playdowns were held in Goderich on the weekend and was won by the Don Mitchelmore rink of the host club. They will continue in competition at Port Elgin next Saturday. The Seaforth entry skipped by Jim Cunningham, with Bill Lobb, vice; Bill Fleming, second; • Clarence Denomme, lead, recorded one win and one loss on Saturday and were knocked out of competition by Goderich on Sunday. Irma and .cord Pryce with Mari and Bruce Coleman ..enjoyed a two- day Mixed Bonspiel in Stratford last weekend. Four games wit lots of good curling. - Around the Club: the Mixed and Men's Playoffs are still scheduled to be played to determine overall win- ners of the last draw. Competition Curling this week should decide a winner in the "B" category who will go on to play the winner of the "A" Division already decided, the Bob Ste. Marie rink. Upcoming - this weekend: the McKinley Chicken Spiel on Saturday, February 24. The Farmer's Open sponsored by McGavin Farm LEquipment is on Wednesday, February 28. Mother Nature can create some beautiful art work on house windows, especially when the temperature dips to minus 32 degrees C (-25 degrees F) as it has in the past week, breaking some new records that go back 70 years. Gerrit's Glads are third with 110. Lois' Lilacs have a slight lead on Vera's Verbenas with 1071/2 points, the Verbenas have '107 and Betty's But- tercups are last with 1021/2. Mona Campbell had the high single of 293, the high triple of 801 and the high average of 202. Clinton Mixed The Super Six remain in the' top spot with 83 points and the Five Stars are second with 77. The Bowling Buddies and the Star Warriors are tied with 73 points each -and Joy's Joys have dropped behind with 72. The High Rollers have 67 points, the Close Encounters have 62 and the Desperatos are still behind with 53'. The biggest event of the year for the club will be coming up this weekend. , Sunday February. 25 when the Brussels club hosts our interclub competition. For those of you who are new at this game, interclub is a grouping of clubs which has an executive who, amongst other things plan a competition once a year. Twenty clubs belong • and are eligible to send contestants. Needless to say every club tries to send their very best skaters in the hope of picking up some points. Our contestants have been picked who are now hard at work in preparation for the big day. On Sunday, everytime a Clintonian steps onto the ice, we in the stands will hoist our new gold and purple banner and shout like crazy! Good luck, Clinton. Londesboro Ladies The High Rollers haye a big lead with 89 points, leaving the Corner Pins second with 63. The Hot Shots and the Lucky Strikers are tied with 57 points apiece. Penny Overboe was the top bowler with the high single of 302 and 260, the tree high triple of 165 and the high average of 202. . The runners -tip in- cluded: high single, - Frances Hummel, • 241; high triple, Frances Hummel, 632; Dorothy Carter, 199. YBC Teen In the men's scoring, Gary Armstrong had the high single of 363, the high triple of 907 and the high average of 219. In the ladies' scoring, Marni Tugwell had the high single of 240, the high triple of 570, and the high average of 193 went to Lynn Armstrong. Cooper's Kooks are in the top position with 88 points and the Honkies are close behind with 85. The, Untouchables have 74, Bowlers Anonymous have 61, the Five Fabulous Freak Outs have 58 and Jackie's Swans are last with 54. St. Marys arena deficit The St. Marys Journal - Argus reported that the town will pay $11,308.68 as their share of the deficit incurred by the St. Marys Arena and Community Centre in 1978. The amount is 50 per cent of the $22,617.36 deficit suffered by the arena. The remaining half of the money will be .pi'cked up by the surrounding townships. It was noted by one councillor that the centre needs to be ,used more often during the week to help offset some of the expenses. It was also noted that the Junior and Inter- mediate hockey clubs did not meet their com- mitments. Fractions for the mile were: 31.1 - 1:03.4- 1:36.1 -2:08.2. From six starts this year, the speedy bay gelding by Record Time - Maisie Belle, has picked up $913. Last year as a three-year-old Metric Time had earnings of $3,195 from two wins, two seconds and one third in 16 starts plus a 2:06.3 pacing record. Randy McLean is trainer -driver for Metric Time. Amherst Jack paced to his third win this year in a new record time of 2:06.4 at Windsor Raceway on February 13 with Don O'Dwyer on the bike for partners Wayne Horner of Clinton and Wm. Hendrie. Dougs Duke was second in the seventh race the' same night for co-owners Clark Horner of Point Edward and trainer Wayne Horner. Willas Ferric finished third at Greenwood Raceway in Toronto on February 14 for owners Bruce Lamont of Seaforth and Ted Lamont of Waterloo. Wayne and ,Bruce Dupee of Clinton attended a horse sale last week in Delaware, Ohio,,where they purchased elinda Wave, a four-year-old bay mare by , Lightning Wave, p, 1:59 -Belinda Blanchard by Good Time. Belinda Wave is a half- sister to the good per- formers Guy Crippen p, 2:05.2, Melissa's Boy, p, 2:06, Linda's Good Time, p, 2:06.3 and Bee Byrd p, 2:09. At Orangeville on Thursday night, Moorelands Dick, owned by Bruce Dupee, finished third with Wayne driving in the first race. - Adios Victory, owned by August De Groof of • Clinton, also was third with Wm. Pennington on the- bike in the eighth. Ron Williamson of Seaforth was second with Tranquil Morris A at Greenwood on Feb. 15. At London on Friday night, Randy McLean drove True Mix to a second spot in the eighth for owner Marion J. Powell of Thamesford, while Granny Mathers continued her consistent performance for Ray Mathers and the Broken M, Stables of Goderich with a third place finish in the ninth. On Saturday afternoon at the same track, Randy McLean was second with Shar Mel for Larry and Ray Jeffrey of Goderich and finished fifth with Tony Bay for Lorne Brown and G. Ross McEwan of Clinton and with Captain Betty for Bob McLean of Goderich. Harness racing fans who watched Channel 9, Windsor on Saturday night were pleased to see Marty Adler salute the Goderich-Clinton- Seaforth area, as well as interview George (Butch) Elliott, a driver- trainer with the Jerry Duford Stable and Wayne Horner of Clinton, an owner and trainer with many of his horses stabled at Windsor. Both predicted their horses would race well and they did. Jerry Duford won the fourth with Baron Reve while Amherst Jack and Fleet Fighter each had a second for the Horner Stable.
