February is Heart Month, and if, when the canvasser calls at your door you are in doubt whether to donate, remember your own heart and give. The theme for this year's drive is Save Your Life. ' Out of every dollar given to the Heart Fund, 70 cents goes for research into the prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke. .London is one of Ontario's important research centres and much work is being carried out there. Last year $300,000 came back into this area for use in research at University Hospital, London. And when you give be sure and ask for a receipt, your canvasser \ will gladly give one to you. +++ There was a special celebration at Van Damme's Holiday Home on February 19 when its - hostess and owner, Mrs. C. Van Damme, celebrated her 70th birth- day. On .,hand to help en- tertain her guests were Verne Sawyer .and his stepdancers, Debbie Siertsema, Erin Cassidy, 0 0 Ea Marcia Boak, Cathy Haw and Jody Merner. The guests also enjoyed a lively game of progressive euchre, with the following winners: ladies' high, Bernice Brown; ladies' low, Mrs. McMurray; ladies' lone, Grace Forbes; men's high, Kay Wise; men's low, Cecil Elliott; men's lone, Stewart Middleton. A prize for the birthday closest to Mrs. Van Damme's was shared between Mrs. C. Sloman who celebrated ,hers on February 15 and Miss Elsie Pick on February 22. Donations Were received from the euchre party . for the Hospital Auxiliary vanishing party fund. Both Mrs. Van Damme and her sister, Kitty, on vacation from England, thanked the guests for a very special evening. +++ In case any readers do not make it all the way through this column, there is an important announcement to make regarding the Canadian Cancer Society Daffodil tea. To com- memorate the joint birth- days of its founder, Lord Baden-Powell and his wife, Lady Baden-Powell February 22 is designated the focal day for the Scout -Guide celebrations which are always held in this week of the year. Clinton forms part of Radar District which encompasses Vanastra and Londesboro as well. This year, for the first time, a number of merchants- have kindly loaned their windows for a display of relative Guide -Scout material. Take a look next time you are uptown. The recent record breaking cold snap has meant some very busy days for local heating oil dealers whose product was in great demand. (News -Record photo) Bud .Byes recovers fr�mfacialburns Bud Boyes, 35, is miraculously recovering in the comfort of his Clinton home after he was hurt in a serious accident. It is unlikely that Mr. Boyes will lose his sight after a battery exploded in his face at his com- pany, Boyes Transport on February 9. "It was so loud that I heard it at the house," his wife Elaine said. OPP report Although the snow let up over the past week, high snowbanks can still make driving treacherous. The Goderich OPP reported that snowbanks on concession 4 - 5, of Stanley Township, south of Sideroad 25 - 26, were the cause of -a February 18 crash. A car driven by Betty M. Ryerson, 16,. RR 5, Clinton was southbound on the concession road when it struck a snowbank and collided with an oncoming car driven by Roger G. Lewis, 17, Goderich. The drivers and their passengers were not injured, but damage to the Ryerson car was set at $400 and $200 to the Lewis vehicle. • "Bud must have had a reflex action and turned when it happened because it just hit the temple area," she noted. Although his, eyes were badly burned, Mr. Boyes' skin was only slightly burned. The battery acid was quickly flushed from his face by fellow em- ployees. Mr. Boyes spent three days in Victoria Hospital following the accident and then was alto led to come home. Since then, he has only had one bad day when he couldn't see, but with doctor's suprevision and medication he is recovering. Euchre results 1 Mr. Jack Upshall- was in charge of the CPT Euchre held in the IOOF and Rebekah Hall on Friday evening with seven tables playing. Prize winners were: ladies' high, Mrs. M. onnodly; gents' high, Al Hoggarth; ladies' con- solation, Mrs., Annie Reid; gents' consolation, Clarence Volland; lone hands, Ross Richardson. Draw prizes were won by Mrs. Cecil Pepper and Mrs. Mary Broadfoot. The next Euchre will be held March 9 in the local hall. Kippen community news By Rena Caldwell UCW meets Ruby Finlayson opened the Kippen UCW meeting with the worship based on the Ten Commandments. Two hymns were sung followed by prayer and the offering. "-The president, Mabel Kyle, opened the business part of the'meeting with a Valentine poem. The minutes were read and approved and various reports were given. Susie Faber and Isabel Reid reported on the Presbyterial meeting they attended in Exeter. Melanie Lovell favoured with two solos accompaning herself on the ukulele and Barbara Cooper gave an in- teresting topic on "The Year of the Child". Myra Lovell conducted a contest, which Helen Anderson won. It was decided to pack a bale of clothing before June 1. Merle McLellan and Myra Lovell were hostesses while Yvette Binnendyk gave Courtesy Remarks. Kippen quotes ' Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Timmermans are on holiday in Florida. Lorne McBride, Zurich, visited in and around the village last week. Mrsi D. E. Kyle and Mrs. W. L. Mellis were the visiting committee from Kippen UCW, seeing Mrs. Richardson at Bluewater, Mrs. John Cooper ,at Clinton, and Huronview residents from the area. We are sorry to note the death of Miss Mabel Whiteman last week. She was a respected and long- time resident of Kippen. Mr. and Mrs. Vern Alderdice are on holiday in Florida. Quite a number of Kippen WI members and Folio tests taken A' young Huron County family is being tested for polio after it came in contact with the disease while attending a wed- ding in Pennsylvania. Two or three persons are being tested, said Huron County medical officer of heaalth Dr. Brian Lynch. He did not release their names or say what part of the county they are from. Lynch said he hasn't quarantined the family because "the risk is very minimal." He said the family came into contact with the polio about four weeks ago, "which is well outside the incubation period." None of the family has shown any symptoms. It was believed seven Oxford County residents also were in contact with the disease as a result of the same Pennsylvania trip but 'all tested negative. Oxford County's medical officer of health could not be reached for comment Sunday. Last summer a polio outbreak in the Norwich area of Oxford County resulted in about nine persons being quaran- tined. Six confirmed cases of the disease were found, mainly among members of an orthodox Dutch Reformed congregation. Court news Wayne Ducharme was fined $250 in Goderich court on Monday on a charge of willful damage. The charge resulted from an incident where Ducharme broke a window in a truck owned by Clinton police Con- stable Wayne McFadden. In Clinton court on February 7 Patrick Denomme was fined $22 for speeding. Dennis Jewitt was fined $54 for having liquor and Aloysius McQuaid was fined $54 for having liquor in another incident.
