Uunz+nwn• Parents group still needs support The meeting of the leaders of Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Scouts, group committee and interested parents was held February 11 t at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. This meeting was better attended than the last one but the groups still need more support. We decided to continue having these, one a month, so we can keep people informed on what we are doing. Also we wish to hear more from the parents and their ideas on the types of outings and fund-raising ideas they have been having or intend to have. They finished arrangements for the pot luck supper on February 18th ' at 4 p.m. in the Recreation Centre. There will also be en- tertainment performed by all groups and possibly the leaders. Plans were made for attending the Church Parade with the Clinton groups to be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Clinton on Sunday, February 18th at 11 a.m. It was decided to meet at the Recreation Centre at 10:15 a.m. and to travel on the bus which comes to Vanastra every Sunday. There was another talk on fund-raising with such ideas ,as a dance-a-thon, walk-a-thon or a garbage cleanup coming forward, It was also put forward that we have a hot dog stand in the Lions spring fair scheduled for June 16. This seems the best idea and we will ap- proach the Lions Club on this. The committee was picked and has agreedto work together on the projects. The people who will work with our Group Committee are Esther Handy and Christine Freriks co-ordinators, June Tomkins as; our go- between with the Recreation Centre and Moira Robinson as phone co-ordinator. We wish to thank these people for their support and wish them luck in their en- deavours. The next meeting is to be held on April 1st at the Recreation Centre at 2 p.m. Hope to see you Public school news 1979 has been declared INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE CHILD by the United Nations. Because Valentine's Day is a day, set aside for "love", the pupils of the Vanastra Public School in co-operation with the Canadian Save the Children Fund have planted a Valentine tree. Our children are being encouraged to donate some of their "candy money". For every nickel that they donate, they will receive a small paper heart. They will be able to pin their heart to the tree. The money raised in this way will be sent to the Canadian Save The Children Fund and will be .used to make life a little bit better for a child in Korea, Kenya or India. Coming events include: February 20, Vanastra Public School Public Speaking Contest; February 27, Public Speaking Contest at Clinton Legion, 7:30 p.m.; March 5, kin- dergarten registration starting at 1:15 p.m.; March 7, school photographer will be here; March 19-23, March Winter break. Did you know: the Vanastra Lions Club distributed our White Gifts ; that Mrs. Santa Claus visited us on December 22; we got new library books from Goderich on January 12; C�mmunity news The Huron Information and Multi -Service Centre will be holding an Open House on Thursday, February 15 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. They are in building A unit 4 of the townhouses. Everyone is welcome to come out and ask questions about the Centre. Ladies Craft classes start again today. Come out and join in the craft you would like to learn. Mini Teens start this Thursday for children ages 7-12. It will be held from 4-5 p.m. in building A unit 4 of the townhouses. Come to ate movies is Friday nights at 4 p.m. in the Vanastra Resource Centre's new location. The admission is five cents per child. Again a reminder about dog tags being due by February 28th. These are available at the Tuckersmith Township municipal office. Also a request to all those people whose dogs are wandering . around loose. The dogs are supposed to be tied. Diane Durnin has returned from her stay in hospital. We wish her all the best for a speedy recovery. Come out and walk a mile with us each night. We leave from 1 Quebec St. every night at 9 p.m. It takes us 20 to 30 minutes to do the mile. Beat the winter rut! The decorations which were done by the Day Care teachers and children were just beautiful. Thanks to them for all their hard work. The music was super and the meal delicious. We were all very pleased with the nice things that were said about our pupils as a result of this visit; nurses from the Huron County Health Unit were at our school on January 23 and January 26 to test hearing and vision. On February 1 the nurses gave polio- shots and TB skin tests; Eskimo Day on January 26 was a real success thanks to Mr. Nicholl's class; did you know that Susan Lehnen won the "Candy House" in December and Stuart Gates won the "Snoopy Dog"? Community plans Winterama The Vanastra Com- munity Association would like to announce their "Winterama" to take place on February 24. One of th featured events will 14,,- a "snow sculpture" contest and prizes have been donated by the Vanastra Factory Outlet, The Vanastra Home Furnishi`jigs and Hendrik-Gelok Electric. Teams may be formed of four members or less and they must register. To register or to'eceive more information please phone 482-7972 or 482-3903. • Another Dig attraction will be a "dress -up" contest to be held at the Vanastra Recreation Centre at 1 p.m. A prize for. the best girl's costume and the best boy's costume will be given out by the Vanastra Resource Centre. Children are encouraged to make their own costumes. A father and son hockey game is also planned to take place on the outdoor rink at 2 p.m. No need to register, just show up. The winners will Club activities and news Brownies On Monday February 12 the Brownie pack covered their toadstool with pennies for Thinking day. They practised their songs for the pot luck supper and prepared for the church parade. All the posters were turned in and all showed great imagination and enthusiasm. The three A friendly handshake is always in order after a good curling game, and such was the case last Sunday, as teams of mixed Knights of Columbus, Masons, and Shriners staged their annual bonspiel at Vanastra. (News -Record photo) Lions except new members On February 7th, 15 members of the Vanastra and District Lions Club and six guests sat down to a meal cooked and served by June Tomkins. After the meal Ellis Scott, president of the St. Marys club spoke to the mem- bers about the District A convention that' they are hosting on March 30th to April 1st. The highlight of the meeting was the in- troduction of three Lion cubs by Ken Mcllveen. The cubs who became fully fledged Lions were Charlie Handy, Harvey Hammond and Ken McLean. Raffle tickets were distributed to all Lions for sale in the community and area. The prize in the raffle is a 20 -inch Sharp colour TV with electronic sensor supplied by Pete's TV in Clinton. The tickets are $1 each and the proceeds will go to community projects. There are still a few tickets left on the Cadillac Sedan De Ville, the proceeds from this draw going towards the Lake St. John's Holiday Camp -for the blind sponsored by the -multiple District "A" Lions Clubs. We would like to thank all those who attended our Valentine's dance on Saturday, Feb. 10. Over the past few months, the Vanastra and District Lions Club has run various functions to raise money for work in the community. Nursery school Nursery school held their Valentine's party Tuesday, February 13th. The children exchanged valentines and also made gifts to take home to their mothers and fathers. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. Cubs The meeting of February 12 was a very busy one. We practised the World Hunger grace in readiness for Sunday's pot luck supper and also practised for, the church parade. There was a letter sent home about the church parade with the time we are to meet and where. Kub Car kits were handed out and the boys are to work on these at home with the help of their parents. Tuckersmith gets control officer By Wilma Oke Tuckersmith Township council last Wednesday hired W. D. Wilson, Brucefield, over eight other applicants for the job of selling dog tags in the township for $2 per tag. ' Clerk Jack McLachlan reported he was receiving many complaints about dogs. "It's terrible," he said as he reported at Vanastra there were people who were afraid to go out walking on the streets at night. Other complaints came from the and Egmondville Brucefield areas. Council accepted the resignation of Phillip Bradley as animal control officei", effective February 1 as he has ,a position out of town. Because of illness previously, he had not been able to work as control officer. Council will send him a letter of appreciation for the work .. he has done. The clerk was authorized to ad- vertise for someone to replace Mr. Bradley. Requests for building permits were approved for Calvin Bisback of Walton, _building a barn on part of a lot on con- cession 1, Huron Road Survey; and for alteration to the historic Van Egmond house in a restoration project. Council turned down a request by the Vanastra Lions Club for discounts on the rental of the Vanastra Recreation Centre for dances. Several objections were made by neigh- bouring residents of a proposed motel unit to be built in Harpurh'ey. A hearing will be held. Council will assist a landowner with 25 per cent of the cost of any reforestation program done through the ministry of forestry.
