Some, on the eoutrary, sey thatthe average sermon given is not worth the stealing, and that, consequeutly, it may be teleem as original. The old plan recorn• meuded by Addison long ago in his quaint, description of how Sir Rover de Coverley 'presented, his vicar with copies of all the volumes of what he thought the beet her= moas, and begged him to make a selection from them for Sunday use in the parieh church, seems to be kill greatly in tashion. If this plan in any degree prevails it is a poor look -out for the chrietiamity of coining days. Preaohing other people's sermons must be the dreariest work any body ever tried. Breaking stone e on the road must be " heaveuly in comparison. Yet the fol. lowing is the way in which a respectable man recootly defended the practice :— There is the first, eseond, and third class of preachers. Now, as every minister dif- fers in brain power, knowledge and talent, why should the third class not use the ma- terials f;i: the first, in order to do good to their hearers, all the more as it hurts no one, and pleases the firstmlaes preachers, who do nob object, but, take it as anlionor. Why, some of them invite this, as does Rev. W, Birch, lunior (Baptist), Manchester, the prince of„gospel -preachers. Journals devoted to agricultural affairs, have given extremely little attention to the "general-purpose" farmer. While ample space is afforded the products of the soil, the raising of stook, and so forth, he has been systematically ignored, notwithstand- ing that he is of far more importance than any of these. The achievements of the farm, in all its interests, are mainly due to one of his calibre. The general-purpose farmer can do many things, but unlike the traditional " Jack of all trades," he does them all well. Ile possesses versatility, re- source and executive ability in a high de- gree. He can plan operations, and execute them as well, or show others how. Ile is an excellent manager. He knows when and how to plant, cultivate end harvest every kind of crop usually grown on a farm. He is a good gardener, and knows how to raise mostly all kinds of fruit. lle can prune, graft and bud trees properly, and raise trees, bushes, shrubs and vines from • seeds and cuttings. He understands the management of manure and knows how to drain land. He is a sUffieiently good me- chanic to put up fences, make gates, hang a grindstone, and shingle a shed. He can repair harness, point a plough, paper a sit- ting room, shear a sheep, dress a hog, cut up a steer, corn beef, smoke bacon arid make sausage. He can sharpen tools, and put handles into axes, hoes and pitch.forks. He knows how to feed, raise and fat- ten all kinds of animals kept for their meat. He understands what kinds of food are best for producing milk wool, flesh and fat. He cultivates the .iety of animals and learns their ways. II has no special occasion for employing a cial trainer, to " brenk in" his colts. The general purpose farmer, must neces sarily /3e a good man of business. He must understand how to buy, sell and "trade," He must be a correct judge of values, and must keep himself infoimed as to prices. He mug have the qualifications of a successful merchant, otherwise he will find it to his advantage to employ some trusty and capa- ble person to do his trading for him. A , farmer who is a poor judge of stock, or who is not well informed in regard to prices, will he likely to lose money, a he undertakes to buy animals with a view of feeding, and then selling 'them. it would be better for him to give his attention to the raising of mops to sell in the market, or feeding such animals as he can raise on his place. Buying young and poor stock of farmers, who have not the ineans of keeping it, is a Fiource 01 great profit to persous who understand the business, but it is likely to ruin those who aye lacking in judgment and information Every lamer who talses a good commercial towspamee can keep himself informed in re. gard to the selling price of fat stock of different grades. If he understands stock vetoing, he tan make money in fattening all the animale Ise cen raise, and it would 'A. be better for him if he is not a successful buyer, to limit hie exertions to this branch of humus. The most astonishing instance of a mau'e regard for his word was recently given by a man who killed hie wife, whom he did not like. It is said by medical authorities that, cheerfulness at meals is a great promoter of health, and that whatever increeees agree- able social intercourse at table is therefore a matter of practical importance. In fact, one cf the strongest pleas in favor of dinner- partieff, large and smell, public or ptivate, is the fact of eocial intercourse at aud after dinner being favourable to health. It is pronounced by high authority that solitary meals are decidedly difficult of digestion, aud that there is no situation in which diges- tion goes on so favourably as during the cheerful play of !sentiment in the after-din- ner small -talk of a genial social or family circle. More than this, the merrier the as- sembly, the better their digestion. " Laugh - says a famous doctor, " is one of the greatest helps to digestion with which I am acquainted ; and the , custom prevalent among our ancestors of exciting it at the table by jesters and buffoons was founded on true me teal principles. What nourish- ment one receives amidst mirth and jollity will certainly produce good and lieht blood."
