School enjoys winter games

–Last Friday was
"Eskimo Day". The boys
and girl® from, Mr.
Nicholl's grade 5-6 class
organized the activities
and everyone had a swell
time.
Charles East and
James Robson organized
the ski relay, and Cemal
Unsal, Owen Burgess and
Allan Bonte-Gelok were
in charge of the harpoon
throw. The snowshoe
relay was organized by
Teresa Morrison,
Charlene °Merpaw and
Robin Haskett, while
Robbie Brunault, Ross
Evans and Dennis
Mclsaac created the "We
Dig Winter Relay".
The snowman building
relay was supervised by
Norman East and Ricky
Crich, and Monty Kelly
and Kevin Smith ran the
hockey relay. Dawn
McLeod and Kathy Davis
were in charge of the tug-
of-war, and Sheila
Maxwell. Virginia Neill
and Linda Frerrics
organized the dog sled
race. The rest of our
pupils made up the . 16
teams that competed.
- This week personnel
from the Huron County
Health -Unit were in the
school to 'administer
booster needles " for
tuberculosis and polio.
Our kindergarten
registration will- be held
on Monday, March' 5,
starting at 1:15 p.m. If

Community news and notes
The Teen Club, Scouts
and Guides are planning
a toboggan party for
Friday February 2 at 7
p.m. They will be
travelling to Hullet for
this and need tran-
sportation so please
contact Meryl Thomas at
482-9467 or Dave ' Dun-
smore at 482-7723 if you
can help.
The Cubs and Brownies
are planning a skating
party for February 5,
using the Lions skating
rink " that is located
behind the Recreation
Centre. They will be
skating from 6:30 p.m. to
7:30 p.m., after returning
to the church for hot
chocolate.
The Guiders of Radar
District invited the
Scouters of Clinton and
Vanastra to a meeting
January 25. After in-
troducing ourselves,
Donna Woods, District
Commissioner for
Guides, told us of dif-
ferent ways to promote
Guide -Scout week. We
decided on a poster
contest, store window
advertisement and
hopefully a page in the
newspaper. The regional
headquarters for both
Guides and Scouts want
us . to work in closer
unison.
The Vanastra Scout
Troop and Cub Pack
hosted the Huron District
Scout Council meeting at
the Vanastra Recreation,
Centre on Monday
January 29. Thank you to
the Recreation Centre for
the use of the room.

Thank you to Mr. Fred
Moore for the free
skating last Saturday. A
good time was had by all.
The Lions Club is
having a Valentines
Dance on February 10.
Tickets are $10 a couple
and the band is
"Kadenza".
The Teen Club is going
strong, and meet on
Friday nights at the
Church from 7:30 to
whenever the kids wish to
wind it up. Any kids from
the ages 12 to ? are
welcome.

parents committee
meeting February 11 at 2
p.m.. at the Recreation
Centre.

Health clinic
The Huron County
Health. Unit will still be
holding their im-
munization clinics in
Vanastra. The next one
will be held on February 1
from 9:30 to 11:30 in
building A unit 4 of the
townhouses.
They will be offering
counselling,• im-
munization, anaemia
testing and fluoride
brushing. There will also
be hearing and vision
testing upon request.
will be registering for
kindergarten next year,
please contact the school
at 482-7828. The Health
Unit will be sending out
appointment times for
March 5. We must know
the names of all families
before, the end of
February so that the
Health Unit has time to
process the information.
Nursery school
Last week at Nursery
School, the' children
enjoyed themselves by
making Valentine bags.
The children will use
these bags to carry home
their Valentines from
their party on Feb. 13 at
which time the children
will exchange cards, play
games, have a sing song
and a special treat. The
Moms are invited to
attend.
A letter will be given to
the children to bring
home
Scouts and Guides
plan special week
The week of February
18 to 25 is Scout -Guide
week to celebrate the
birthdays of Lord Baden
Powell and his sister
Lady Baden Powell, the.
founders.
We are starting this
week off with a com-
munity pot luck supper to
be held at the Vanastra
Recreation Centre at 4
p.m.on February 18.
The four groups are
working together on this
and we' hope, to get as
many . members of the
community out as we
can.
The Recreation Centre
is supplying the silver-
ware and paper plates.
Each group has a food
which each family will
have to bring, so if you
wish to attend and you
have no one in these
groups, please contact
the leaders. They are

My Brownie meeting
On January 22 at the
first Vanastra Brownie
Pack, we had our
Brownie Gold and sang
our song. We had some
games and played for
awhile. We went to our
groups and then Fran and
Heather had a puppet
play. We went to our
circle and said our prayer
and our closing and went
home.
On January 29,,we went
to our groups and then
we had Brownie Gold. We
said, our Brownie
'promi§e. We talked about
Thinking Day and played
games. We said our
prayer and went

Association pians
winter-rama fun
The association is
holding a winter-rama on
February 24. This will
feature a sculpture
contest and father and
child races.
The sculpture contest
will be done in teams of
three or four. The teams
will have to register
before the contest. The
father and child races
will be held on the ice rink
weather permitting. If
the weather is bad, the
races will be held in the
Recreation Centre where
they will be selling hot
dogs and hot chocolate. •
The association is also
holding a draw on a
grocery voucher for $75
on March17.

It wasn't hard to see who was getting beaten in this tug-of-war match. The'
competition was tough, but the contests were only in fun as the students at the
Vanastra Public School took part in Eskimo Day. (News -Record photo)
Sharon's recipe corner
Beef Stroganoff
3 lbs. onions "
1 ib. mushrooms"
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp. Worcestershire
sauce
1 6 -oz. can tomato paste
hot cooked rice
one-third cup fat or salad
offal
1 can condensed tomato
soup
1 tsp. salt
2 lbs. beef sneak
few grains of pepper
Using coarse blade, put
onions through food
chopper. Drain and
reserve juice (5 cups) .
Cook oni,pi ,pwly (2p
minutes) it -or oil. Cut
steak in thin slices; slice
mushrooms. Add steak
arid mushrooms to
onions. Cook until brown.
Combine tomato soup,
tomato paste, - onion,
juice, cream, salt, pepper
and Worcestershire
sauce. Pour over steak.,
mixture. Cover; simmer
1 hour. terve on rice.
Strawberry tarts
Make 1 pastry recipe.
Make unbaked tart shells
and chill while preparing
filling.
1/4 cup butter
1 tsp. cornstarch
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs
11/2 cup desiccated
cocoanut
Cream butter with
sugar and cornstarch.
Add the 2 eggs and beat
well. Add lemon juice and
cocoanut. Mix well.
Put 1 teaspoon of
strawberry jam (rasp-
berry jam could be
substituted) in bottom of
each tart shell. Put 1
teaspoon of the above
mixture on top. pake in as
400 degree oven just until
brown.
Helpful Hints
When rolling out pie
dough, freezer paper
works much more ef-
fectively than waxed
paper.
If a scoop of ice cream
is left, use it to make ice
cream sandwiches.
Soften the ice cream,
spread it between ,two
cookies and freeze.
