Two weeks ago it was very stormy and the group was called off for the day. There were a few who were disappointed - so it was decided, that, whatever the weather - the club will go on for those who wish to attend. Last Friday having a party for the Hospital Auxiliary was discussed. It was planned to hold it the last Friday afternoon in February and it is hoped the weather may not be so stormy at that date. - +++ Mr. and Mrs. Jack Armstrong and Elizabeth Medd recently attended the funeral of the latters' sister-in-law Mrs. James Morrison of Ajax. +++ A good crowd gathered at the Summerhill Hall last Friday evening January 19 with eleven tables playing. High points scored were: June McCowan, and Clayton Ellis; low points, Susan Van Egmond and Roy Wheeler. Linda Watson and John Van den Elzen had the most lone hands. Bill Gibbings won the box of groceries. There will be another card party on February 9. +++ The- 300 Booster Club monthly draw for - the Junior "C" was won by .Craig Cox of Clinton with a prize of $100. . +++ This week we received a request from a Mr. Peter Bowers of Tara, Ontario. The following is the text of his request: "Dear Sir, I am doing research for a book on Canadian National Railways into the Grey - Bruce -Huron area from the Toronto, Hamilton and London area. I would like to ask your assistance and that of your readers in locating old post cards and photos of stations, locomotive servicing facilities, bridges, construction scenes, etc. along with steam and diesel freight, passenger; mixed and snow plow operations over the years. I am particularly looking for photos of: the rotary snowplow (snowblower) and other views of plows used to open area raillines in 1947; early self propelled "unit cars" used to Southampton in late 1920's and for ex- press service to Owen Sound in 1960; pre CNR Operations; l"iabOiiiY and ship views, -and em- ployees. The ' competitions will take place in the 9,000 seat Ottawa Civic Centre. Canada's new Governor-General, "Ed Schreyer, will officially open the competitions. Rinks will be there representing the 10 provinces, the Northwest Territories and possibly the Yukon. The Briar will be shown on CBC -TV. (photo by Steve Cooke) Holmesville United annual meeting by Blanche Dee ves At the 1 p.m. service last Sunday, Mr. Oestreicher conducted the devotions and offered prayer for the children as they went to their classes. Bill Crawford and Bill Norman received the offering. Mr. Oestreicher was appointed chairman and Jim Lobb was appointed secretary 'of the annual meeting. The minutes were received as read. The finances of the church are in good order. The chairman reported for the centennial committee. A social afternoon is planned for February 11 with lunch. All who are interested in the outdoor recreation are to come to the church service dressed for this occasion. The committee regrets the fact that some invitations to centennial activities have been returned due to wrong addresses or people on the move. Anyone who knows people and their addresses, who should be contacted, please contact Mr. Oestreicher or Mrs. Doug Norman. Nominating committee report is as follows: stewards -„ three year term, Mrs. Wm. Norman, Frank Thompson, Mrs. Gerald Walter, Ben Whitely, Mrs. Ben Whitely and John Wyatt; session, 3 year term, Don • Harris, Murray Lobb, Mrs. Wm. Porter, and Elmer Potter. These people are to form the nominating committee for 1980. Usher captains, , Bill Crawford, and Murray Lobb; Manse committee representatives, Mrs. Harry Cudmore, Mrs. John , Grigg and John Wyatt. United Church Observer representative, Mary Jean Bettles; representative to the Presbytery, Mrs. Jean Ginn. All nominations were accepted. The , time to hold the church service, was voted on. The result, was January and February at 1 p.m., the other ten months at 9:45 a.m. School News Public speaking is on Tuesday, February 27. The Royal Canadian 1 Legion Branch in Clinton will hold its annual public speaking contest between area schools. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. with the registration of the con- testants starting at 7:00' p.m. The contest is open to pupils from Grades 4-8. Holmesville School will have its own contest to pick the finalists a week or two before February 27. Contestants will be organized into two levels. Grades 4-6 and Grades 7- 8. Each pupil selects his own topic which must be no less than three minutes and no more than five minutes. We would like to express our appreciation to the sponsor, the Clinton Legion. . Nurses from the Huron County .Health Unit were at the Holmesville School on January 29 to give pupils, who received consent, their TB skin tests. The March of Dimes campaign is held in the 'latter part 'of January through the first part of February. The organization sends a claim box to the, school so that the pupils can contribute to this wor- thwhile cause. We would urge the .. parents' cooperation in this regard. On Saturday, February. 10 the senior boys and girls volleyball teams will 'travel to Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton for a volleyball tournament. If inclement weather occurs, the tournament will be held on Saturday, February 17. More details on this tournament later. The staff of Holmesville School would like to thank all the parents who attended the school skating party on January 12. This skating party was such a success that a second skating party has been scheduled for Clinton arena on Friday, February 9 from 1-3 p.m. Township Dance , Another very suc- cessful Goderich Township Recreation Dance was held Saturday evening, January 27 at the White Carnation with everyone dancing and enjoying the music of the Bluewater Playboys. Mr. Grant Stirling spoke on behalf of the Recreation Committee and thanked everyone for coming and to enjoy themselves. Grant asked for a round of applause for the band. During the intermission, Walter Mcllwain made a draw for the door prize, a bushel of apples donated by Laithwaite Orchards of Goderich Township, which was won by John and ,Helen Westbrook. A delicious lunch was serve.d by the. host and hostess, David and Sandra Orr.
