Goderich Twp.
With an eye on the
unsettled blustery
weather on Wednesday,
January 17 the Goderich
Township recreation
committee hastily
covered considerable
business for meeting No.
2 of the year.
Assistant chairman
Doug Yeo ably conducted
the meeting with Grant
Stirling, Hazel McCreath,
Bev Orr, Marilyn Forbes,
Walter McIllwain,
Audrey Middleton also
attending.
Old business from each
individuals mailed
secretary's reporf was
tidily finalized. There
was a special notation
that due to a misun-
derstanding, the rec
committee had realized
more profit on their
November '25th dance
than they had first
thought. Now that we
know a fairly good profit
can be made (from which
proceeds go towards the
new athletic field) there
will be greater interest to
pursue the future dances
coming up January 27
and in March.
Walter MclllwaJin
distributed tickets for the
January 27th dance to the
members so that a
special drive can be
made to disperse them
throughout the area
within the week. The
dance is being held atthe
White Carnation with the
Bluewater Playboys
performing.
Figure skating reports.
from Goderich and the
Clinton clubs were
received and filed.
The role of the township
representative on the
Goderich Rec Council
was discussed. Although
having no 'vote he -she is
included in all
discussions and a good
rapport ensues between
town and township.
Finally, a motion was
made by Bev Orr that we
continue to send a
representative to the
Goderich rec. meetings

and if anything pertinent
to the township interests
our committee would like
to be specially notified. It
was agreed that
cooperative planning
between the two boards
was not desired at this
time.
Notification was
received from the
Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority that
1,500 white spruce and
poplar trees will be
planted by them, as
requested, at the lakeside
park and other places in
early spring. Also, they
have agreed to make two
signs for the' lakeside
park.
A softball coordinator
is required for the
township this summer.
Due to the importance of
good leaders, the com-
mittee is anxious to ob-
tain good softball
leadership now. The
township is very grateful
for the excellent
leadership in the past and
it is hoped that the
leaders will act again.
Excellent records were
kept last year that the
organization for this year
should be fairly simple. Is
there anyone out there
who- would fill this
position? Phone chair-
man Gerry Ginn 524-4163.
On the new athletic
field, Grant Stirling
reported that the deed to
the land was not yet
finalized and until it is no
action can be taken. He
stated, however, that the
township is committed to
building a new township
hall, ,With the couple of
grants added to the
bequest gift, a nice sized
building is possible.
A number 'has been
received for application
for a Wintario grant.
When • procedures can
begin, a needs test for a
Wintario grant will be
conducted. Then culture
and recreation council
will help plan the layout
of the athletic field, and
buildings. "Certainly"
rec. news
Stirling said, "the soft-
ball field lights and
standards will be in-
* stalled this year."
The winter recreation
programs as advertised
in the Goderich and
Clinton papers were
discussed. No interest
was shown in organized
programs in crafts,
weaving, floor hockey,
ceramics, cross country
skiing, chaircaning.
However, the big in-
terest was in volleyball
and some in painting.
Two programs in the
volleyball will begin this
week, a Tuesday night 8
p.m. adult group with
Dick Steenstra in charge;
and a Wednesday night
youth group with Dave
fiche s' and Bill Rapson
responsible.
It was learned that the
Bayfield arena will not
have ice available for
hockey this winter.
However, they do have an
open air ice surface in the
park for anyone who
wishes to use it.
A small group Of would-
be painters will begin
classes when
arrangements are made.
Township residents and
their friends are
reminded again to "Let's
dance" this Saturday
night at the township
dance at Holmesville.
