Clinton News-Record, 1979-01-18, Page 21VANASTRA the( a.sharon,..om. ) voice Public school news Well, things are getting back to normal again at the Vanastra P.S. Mr. Ross justvicked up seven big boxes of library books from the Huron County Library in Goderich. The boys and girls can hardly wait to see what new adventures they can now read. Plans are being made for "Eskimo Day." On Friday January 26, our boys and girls will be competing in seven different outdoor ac- tivities that will be organized by Mr. Nicholls grade 5-6 class. The afternoon's ac- tivities will begin at 2:15 and will end at about 3:30 p.m. (weather per- mitting). On Thursday, January 11, Mr. McConnell's class went on a mini -field trip. In order to provide themselves with research materials for a project that they were com- pleting on Eskimos and the northern Arctic, they visited the Clinton Public Library. They would like to thank Mrs. Farquhar for being so helpful and making all feel so welcome. Pupils from our school hope to take part in the Legion , Public Speaking Contest. At the present time they -are preparing their speeches for our school contest. Floor hockey started this week, and is being organized by Mrs. Pepper and Mrs. Nicholls. We have just received a "go ahead" from the Township of Tuckersmith to create a small ar- boretum in the park adjacent to our school. We hope to have the local Conservation Authority plant 50 different species of trees in the park so that our pupils will be able to adopt a tree and watch it develop. Funds from the students bank account will be used to pay for the trees. Hopefully, this arboretum will be here for future generations to enjoy. Cubs, Scouts and Brownies Cubs The pack has started again for 1979 with a busy time to follow. We have measured the snow for depth to compare it to rainfall. We found that on the average one and a half inches of rain has fallen since winter started. The boys were sent home this week to draw or trace a picture of the Canadian Flag. These_. _ projects * are done towards earning stars. Some of our boys have earned proficiency badges. Colin Thomas pet care,, Jamie O'Rourke collector and - house or- derly and Shannon Mellor pet care and collectors. Next week, the boys will start a chemical garden. We are looking forward to seeing the results of this artificial garden. The pack wished a. farewell to Matthew Burgess who is leaving our group. Matthew was given the grand howl and a cheer by all the cubs. Our pack also welcomed a new leader in Myrna Smith. We hope she will enjoy her time Brownies The Brownies have changed their times from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.! The girls are working towards their golden bar and golden hand. The girls are showing an interest in earning their badges. Watch the paper for future events. Scouts The Scouts have started 1979 with a new program. There will be a change in the meeting times starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m., January 24. On Jan. 24, there will be an investiture of four bpys. In Huron CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, JANUARY 18,1979 --PAGE '21 Toronto moviemakers want old house Toronto movie -makers are looking for a lonely,. abandoned Huron County farmhouse as a possible setting for a film. Heinar Piller of Errant Productions said Monday his company wants the site for a film to be called The Murder of Maggie Sykes. He hopes to shoot it this summer. The script is by Paris author James Nichol, best known to South- weQtern Ontnrio th' ntr- goers for his stage plays. One of these, Gwendoline, was produced last summer by the Blyth Summer Festival. Another, Ste. Marie Among The Hurons, was staged by Theatre London in 1974 and revived in 1977. Piller, former artistic director of Theatre London. said the film script is based "very, very loosely" on an ac- tual incident in the southern U.S. Two children whose cousin has disappeared accuse their brutal parents of murdering her, and fabricate enough evidence to get them convicted. The film can be shot for less than $1 million, Piller said. Efforts to arrange financing for it were given a boost last week by word that US. _actress Patricia Neal had WWI ace Eric Peterson of Theatre Passe Muraille poses by a poster sketch of Billy Bishop, Canada's World War One Flying Ace whom he will portray inhe /production of Billy Bishop Goes. Much of the film would be made near Toronto, but the company is also looking for a picturesque farmhouse setting in Huron, perhaps in the Goderich or Benmiller areas. A second Errant Productions film project, a comedy entitled All Steamed Up, Is tem- porarily idling, Piller said, until The Murderof Maggie Sykes is out of the way. All Steamed Up will cost $3 million to $4 million, a difficult amount to raise fora first movie. The Maggie Sykes film is intended to boost the company's credibility with potential backers of the bigger one. Meanwhile, Errant Productions also is staying busy in the field of live theatre. Its revue based on Hollywood history, Flicks, is in its 49th week at Old Angelo's in Toronto, and the company is looking around for a location in which to open its own permanent dinner - theatre operation.
