Support staff at Ontario's 22 Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology voted 80 percent in favour of authorizing their union to strike, yesterday. The union reported a 91 percent turnout across the college system. Conestoga's support staff voted 70 percent in favour of the strike with a 96 percent turnout, the union said. Support staff includes only the College's clerical and technical taff. The earliest a strike could he called .is Mon- day; January 22, ac- cording to Tom Allan, President of local 238 of the Ontario Public Ser- vice Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents .the support staff membership. Because of the "one strike - all strike" stipulation of the con- tract, all members are deemed to be taking part in the strike when 51 percent of the °mem- bership votes to strike. More than 4,300 people are employed in support staff functions at the 22 community colleges. Prior to the strike vote, the support staff mem- bership had not voted on the final offer made by the Ontario Couticil of Regents, representing the Colleges. That offer included: a 2.78 percent - the -board increase, retroactive to September 1, 1978. A .further six percent across-the-board increase would be ef- fective April 1, 1979. The support staff contract being negotiated was for one year from September 1, 1978 to August 31, 1979. Other- improvdments offered by the Council of Regents included: monetary adjustments to tradesmen and jour- neymen classifications, implementation of a group , leadership premium, increase in shift premium to 23 cents an hour, increase in life insurance from '5O00—to- $,10,000 and im- provements in- mileage, bereavement and meal allowance.
