HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1979-01-11, Page 2PAGE 2—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 1979 m Telephone wanted If time is a -wearing on you inthe next month or so - and if you want to be a part of one of the last spectaculars of this century - then plan to be at Brandon, Manitoba on February 26, 1979 at 10:45 a.m. Five minutes earlier .or later will be no good. Should you be there at exactly that time you will be a witness to the last total eclipse of the sun to take place this century on the North American continent. Thousands of people from all over the world are expected to be in Manitoba to enjoy the mid-day darkness. The eclipse will last two minutes 51 seconds in Brandon. That means a 100 per cent eclipse in Winnipeg and Brandon, 97 per cent in Vancouver, 7,3 per cent in Ottawa and only 57 per cent in Halifax. We are only guessing to suggest we might get a duration a little less than the 73 per cent of Ottawa. Maybe one of the budding scientists in our midst would straighten this non- scientific mind out before next week's paper. If you do not want to travel to Manitoba, the northern Ontario town of Red Lake is also in the path of the total eclipse. . This. item has been in- cluded in Town Talk more as a matter of general interest but even so - should anyone be actually entertaining the idea of visiting for the specific purpose of eclipse watching - then please remember than an eclipse is a real danger to the eyes. Filters that absorb ultra -violet rays are a must if the eyes are to be safely protected. The above information came to us as a press release from the Canadian Government. We have the complete article in the office here should anyone wish to drop in and read same. + ++ The news gems fell off again this week - but there were a couple who took' time to bring in items. + ++ Stan and Kay Falconer, Gibbings St., had their youngest son Vic home from Edmonton for the holiday season„ Also visiting on Boxing Day were Mr. and Mrs. Tony Aitkens and family of Camp Borden. Both Vic and Tony are with the Canadian Armed Forces (Air Force Branch) . +++ Mrs. Lloyd Rumball (Marg) has entered St. Joseph's Hospital for surgery. Mayor Harold Lobb said that the previous council had approved the addition of an extension telephone in the small board office in the town hall. The phone was to be established there since the only other ones in the building , were unavailable for use for night meetings since they were locked behind the door to the clerk's office. Mayor Lobb pointed out, and several coun- cillors agreed, that at evening meetings a telephone is often needed to obtain information on pertinent issues being discussed. Councillor Roy Wheeler wondered if an extension phone would be abused through long distance calls and suggested that a jack be installed in the speedy recovery. The Knights of Columbus December draw for $365 was wan by Bill Cox of Clintan, consolation draw of $50 won by Eldon Schmidt of Clinton. Both tickets were sold by Rene Brochu. The luck is coming back to Clinton - if interested call Rene for a ticket on the January draw. Off track betting The Clinton Kinsmen Raceway,. through their organization, the Harness Tracks of Ontario Association (HTO), is strongly objecting to off track betting, and has embarked -on a letter w r•ii scheme t o agricultural minister Eugene Whelan, Justice Minister Marc Lalonde, and federal members of parliament. Under an Q;ff-track betting scheme, which would need both federal and provincial approval, a bettor could place abet at any track in the country by just going down to h neighborhood store, and wouldn't 'have to attend the track. Members of the Har- ness Tracks of Ontario Association, with all the smaller tracks like Clinton and most of the larger 'tracks except Windsor and the Jockey Club, have objected to the off-track betting scheme, claiming that all the money would be bet at the larger tracks, because the public wouldn't have to attend the races. - "It would put us put of business," said Paul Kerrigan, chairman of the Clinton Raceway, "and a lot of other tracks too." The HTO says that in New York State, off-track betting has killed the racing industry, which is being kept alive only by a government subsidy. • According to ' Ray Connell, president of HTO and Flamboro Downs, "If we do not act now, and do it immediately many of us (race tracks) will not be. around to object later if off-track betting is legislated, especially in the province of Ontario." l thn clerk's telephone being transported when needed. It was pointed out that some meetings aren't called until after the clerk's office is closed and it would still be impossible to obtain the. telephone to hook up to. the jack. Councillor Ron McKay voiced, "If people • are responsible enough to have a key to the office, then they should be responsihle enough to use a phone." "It's not that I mistrust people," Councillor Wheeler replied, "I just don't want to get into any problems or have to embarrass anyone." Deputy Clerk Marie Jefferson pointed out that note pads are presently set beside the telephones and all long distance calls made are recorded on them. Although council seemed to generally agree that an extension could be used, no final decision was made. ondesboro news by Dora Shobbrook Church news Greeting the congregation on Sunday morning• at the United Church were Nelson McClure and Lloyd Pipe.
