Historians attend Workshop
History dull? - not when
Gerald Killan is in charge
or Ed Phelps is talking!
Dr. Kilian is chairman of
the local societies
committee of the Ontario
Historical Society and
Mr. Phelps is curator of
the Regional Collection at
the D B Weldon Library
of the University of
Western Ontario.
Executive members of
the Huron County and the
Bayfield Historical
Societies attended a
workshop on Saturday,
December 2 in London.
Mr. Dave McClure of
Crediton, Mrs. Robert
Simpson of Hensall, Miss
Dorothy Cox, Miss Kay
Reid and Mrs. Gwen
Pemberton of Bayfield
were amongst 40
registrants. The morning
session was held at
King's College and was
designed for researchers
and genealogists with
little or no writing ex-
perience. Dr. Kilian
pointed out that there is a
new breed amongst
researchers called
LACACS which, he said,
are multiplying like
rabbits all over the
province. (At latest
count, there are over 90)
Dr. Jacques Goutor
spoke on organizing
research data in
preparation for writing
and Dr. Kilian chaired a
session on the problem of
providing that all-
important historical
setting and background
when writing family
profiles or biographies.
This is most essential
and, of course, requires
much patient digging.
In the afternoon, a
conducted tour of the
D B Weldon Library - the
sixth largest in Canada -
was followed by a session
on the value of the
university reference
section to the writer of
local or family history.
We then went to the room
where the Regional
History collection is
housed and Ed Phelps'
told us about it. He talked
about the research tools
and archival resources
that are available there
and stressed the great
importance of co-
operation amongst all the
groups , which have
collections of archives.
By using the many
modern copying
techniques, such as
photostats, microfilm
and microfiche, valuable
interchange can be made.
There are collections in
many places - museums,
historical societies,
churches, public
libraries, voluntary
organizations, townships
large companies as well
as the provincial,
national and university
archives. These should be
preserved and shared
before it is too late.
Trinity Church events
The Chancel Guild met
at the home of Flo
Youmatoff with the
president Lillian Higgins
in the chair. There were
seven members present
to plan for Christmas
decorations. A work
party will convene on
Monday December 11 at
10 am at the Youmatoff's
home.
On Saturday,
December 16 at 2 pm
Christmas decorations
and flowers will be at the
church to. be arranged. A
delicious lunch was
served by the hostess.
Margaret Larson read
the Lesson at the 10 am
service, Matthew 24: 1-28.
On Sunday mornings in
the Advent season, we
'read the two chapters .in:;
-S-t. Matthew's gospel -
which describe Christ's
return in Judgement. In
the passage read by Mrs.
Larson, our Lord
foretells, in the same
breath, both the fall of
Jerusalem and his own
return at the Last Day.
Young people followed
the Rector into the
Church during the
opening hymn and
proceeded to the rear of
the Church where the
White Gifts had been
placed. A brief prayer
was offered for the gifts.
Then the young people
came to the front of the
Church, sat on the floor
(and the Rector too) as he
explained the meaning of
the Advent wreath. The
first candle, the candle of
Promise, was lit by
Colleen Cluff. The young
people then left the
church to continue
making their own Advent
wreaths and to practise
Christmas songs led by
Lillian Higgins.
A pastoral letter from
the Primate of the
Anglican Church of
Canada was read by the
Rector dealing with the
recent Lambeth
Conference, where 410
Bishops from all over the
world gathered to con-
sider the unity of the
Church and its capacity

to cope with the dif-
ficulties confronting it.
The Anglican Com-
munion is the second
largest world body with
only the Roman Branch
of the Christian Church
being larger. The ex-
perience of the fact that
the Church is multi-
cultural and international
in character was
demonstrated. The
Bishops noted the
diversity of doctrine and
practice within the unity
of the Faith was the
essence bf Anglicanism.

"Sparky" of the Village
fire department advises
'Pick a nice green
Christmas tree. Cut about
an inch off the stump and
keep it in water. It will
help if you add a little
sugar to the water.'
Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Latimer visited with his
grandmother Mrs. G L
.1 night on Sunday. They
--were dinner by
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert
Latimer, all from
Weston.
At the ABC session in
the Municipal Building on
Wednesday Dawna
Westlake got the high
bridge score, Gwen
Pemberton the low, and
Ethel Knight won the
lucky draw.
Gwen and Chris
Klaudia and family were
recent guests of Mr. and
Mrs. 'Harry Baker to
celebrate Gwen's bir-
thday.
Mrs. Arnold Makins
and her daughter Brenda
Miskip of Goderich and
granddaughter Brooke,

daughter Bonnie in
London for two days last
week.
Mrs. Lloyd Westlake
was a guest for a week
with her cousins Mr. and
Mrs. Louis Burnell in
Guelph.
Weekend guests with
the Lloyd Westlakes were
Rick and Judy from
London, Catherine from
Kitchener and Paul
Pringle from Toronto.
Baptist news
by Janet Talbot
Due . to the icy road
conditions the
congregation at the
Bayfield Baptist Church
was smaller than normal
but the services were
held as usual, with the
Pastor, Rev. Les Shiel
continuing in the study of
Family Life, using
Exodus, chapter 2, verses
1-10. The Mother of Moses
was a woman of faith, she
realized her baby was no
ordinary child and
trusted God to care for
him. Only God could
arrange such a sequence
of events to raise up a
leader to lead His people
out of the bondage of the
Egyptians.
Miss Elva Keys played
the piano in the absence
of Mrs. Muriel Snider,
and Miss Shirley Keys
played the organ.

Theatregoers visit London
Theatre London
members from Bayfield
(there are about a score
of them) were fortunate
to have excellent driving
conditions for their first
visit to London of the '78-
'79 season last Thursday.
It was a double treat as
we arrived early enough
to wander about the new
lobby, lounges, rest
rooms and stairways.
The comfortable new red
plush seats with plenty of
leg room were a most
pleasant change, and no
water was dripping down
on my seat like the last
time I was there! Where
it came from, in the old
theatre I'll never know,
but I even had a letter of
apology from the
management, had an
umbrella over my knees
and thought there was a
bad rainstorm. The stars
were shining and the
streets dry when we
emerged. Was it the ghost
of Ambrose Small
weeping for his old
theatre? Orlo Miller
thinks it may be lurking
there,' •

Dedication and the Rev.
Alun Thomas the
Benediction.
The Reeve then ex-
pressed his thanks to the
retiring Reeve Ed.
Oddleifgon and retiring
Councillor Frank Burch
for their dedication to
their duty during their
periods of office, and
greeted the new Coun-
cillors.
He outlined methods of
procedure, stating that
regular meetings would
continue to be held on the
first and third Monday of
each month, except on
holidays when they will
be re -scheduled at the
call of the Reeve:
A brief council meeting
was then held for which
ratepayers, present for
the inauguration, were
invited to remain - and
also for refreshments. A
special meeting date was
set on Thursday,
December 7 to consider
garbage collection
arrangements for the
coming year.
