Friends and relatives help
Bucha na ns celebrate 60th
When Alfred Buchanan, a young man
from Hensall went out on the Harvest
Excursion to Moose Jaw, he probably
didn't know that he would come back to
Ontario with a wife.
On November 25, 1918 when Alfred
married Dora Dobey, he also probably
didn't think that 60 years later he and
.his wife would be celebrating their 60th
wedding anniversary.
The couple, who met while working
on a farm near Moose Jaw, greeted old
friends and family at Huronview pn
Saturday when they celebrated their
diamond anniversary.
Although the couple are both con-
fined to wheelchairs and live at
Huronview, they've had an active life
and still keep busy. When they moved
to Ontario 56 years ago, they started
with a farm near Constance. In 1960 the
Buchanans retired and moved to a
James Street home in Clinton.
Mrs. Buchanan now spends a lot of
her time knitting.
"When you have 18 grandchildren
there's lots to do," she laughed.
Along with five sons, Wilfred from
Ilderton, Donald and Fred in Con-
stance, Gordon and Kenneth in B,itish
Columbia and one daughter, PMrs.
Joyce (Jerry) Cook of Clinton, the
Buchanans have 18 grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.
Some 60 relatives and friends joined
with the couple when a lovely lunch
was served in their honor at Huronview
on Saturday. Guests arrived from the
surrounding area as well as from
Toronto, London and Woodstock.
Amongst the many gifts and floral
arrangements that were received Mrs.
Buchanan received a special diamond
necklace from her sons Gordon and
Kenneth and their families. As well,
Pat Cook presented her grandparents
with corsages.
Special congratulatory telegrams
were received from Queen Elizabeth II
and Prime Minister Trudeau and local
members of parliament.

Helpful Hints
Make an Advent
calendar: Cut a large
piece of cardboard into
the shape of a Christmas
tree, and glue twenty-
four small foil tins (tart
size tins) to the tree. Put
a verse inside each tin ; a
message from old
Christmas cards, or a
candy or trinket. Cut
circles of bright paper
and glue on each tin.
When the children
remove the bright paper
each day they find their
surprise concealed
behind it.
. To make your own
Christmas tree
decorations, spray empty
thread spools with glue
and sprinkle them with
glitter; sequins, or tiny,
seed pearls. Loop string
through the centre hole to
attach to the tree.
Pin bows and other gift
package decorations to a
styrofoam cone. Use the
tree as a table decoration
during the Chiistnas
season; the rest of the
year it is a handy way of
storing bows for reuse.
Use old Christmas
cards to decorate big
boxes that are awkward
or expensive to wrap. Cut
the pictures off the cards
and glue to the boxes.
