In a day and age when most of us believe that religious persecution belongs back with the Spanish Inquisition and other unbelievable acts committed in the name of the Almighty - it is hard to reconcile such wholesale destruction of human life in a western hemisphere where the spirit of Christmas is essentially "Peace on earth, good will to man." +++ "It's not how old you are, but how you are old." So said the late actress, Marie Dressler. And that's a way of saluting those of our citizens who are over the 90 mark. This past Monday, --flew November 27, 1978 Mrs. Vince Bartliff of Huron Street celebrated her 97th birthday. Her normally quiet day was punctuated with the visits of many well wishers - family, neighbours and friends dropping in to honour the occasion. Perhaps this would be a good time to start a salute to the 90'ers. We know there must be a number of our townspeople in and around Clinton who will be having birthdays in the 90's bracket. If their families or friends would let us know we would be delighted to make ap- propriate mention. It is both an honour and a privilege to belong to this select few. + + + Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cummings leave on Thursday of this week for England and Ireland. Maclean's won't reprint story MacLean's Magazine's managing editor, Kevin Doyle has turned down a request from Exeter Mayor Bruce Shaw asking that an article on Huron County's con- troversial book ban be reprinted in the magazine which circulates in this area. The Exeter Times - Advocate explained that the story appeared only in the Toronto issues and referred to the county board of education's decision to remove Marg'aitet Laurence's novel, The Diviners from high school English courses. The book was considered to contain obscene language. Mr. Doyle said that he didn't think the article was worth reprinting and had no intention of asking people in Toronto to read it again. However, the publishing firm did say that they would send copies of the October 2 Toronto edition to any subscriber in Huron who requested it.
