No strike
While some 13,000 non-
medical Canadian Union
of Public Employees
(CUPE) workers in 56
Ontario hospitals are
threatening to strike by
the end of this week,
Clinton Public Hospital
will be exempt from the
possbile walkout action.
The closest hospitals
that may be affected by
the illegal walkout of
housekeeping, laundry
and RNA staff are the
Seaforth and Stratford
hospitals since their
employees are under
CUPE. However the
similar employees at the
Clinton hospital are in-
volved with the Service
Employees Union.
Although hospital
administrator at Clinton
Doug Coventry doubts
that the CUPE workers
will go on strike. The
employees have
threatened to walkout, in
defiance of the law that
prohibits strikes by
hospital workers.
The possible strike
'follows a rejection of four
per cent wage increase
offer. The union wants
$600 -a -year increase, or
5V2 per cent.
According to Pat
Kenny, spokesman for
the bargaining com-
mittee, the workers have
been faced with low
wages for the past 1:
years since the act tc
prohibit strikes wet;
passed. Although
workers who strike may
face penalties of $1,000 a
day per member, Kenny
says that the fine i5
meaningless to moss
members.
This week at
the Legion
By Rene Brochu
Comrade Brian Reeves
was the lucky winner of
the wine hamper at the
Friday evening TGIF
night. We're sure that
he'll make good use of his
raffle winnings.
However, Comrade Reta
Robinson was not so
fortunate in the Atten-
dance Draw as she had
failed to register last
week.
Last Saturday evening,
the Ladies Auxiliary
catered to a banquet for
the Huronview staff. The
dinner was again
delicious and expertly
served and we com-
pliment otir Auxiliary for
their fine work. Our
thanks to Comrades
Harold and Bessie Black
and Comrade Pat
McMahon who tended bar
for the Huronview dance
which followed the din-
ner.
At the Monday evening
general meeting, the
members voted in favor
of sponsoring the Block
Parent Program for the
Town of Clinton and as
such have donated suf-
ficient funds towards the
formation and operating
expenses of the Block
Parent Program Com-
mittee.
The Legion also agreed
to sponsor the
registration expenses for
two dart teams into the
Huron County Dart
League. It promises to be
a busy fall and winter
season as men's euchre is
off to a good start every
Tuesday evening and
cribbage every other
Wednesday evening. You
still have time to register
for all of these activities.
