PAGE 2` ---CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, OCTQBFR 20,1978
Plenty has already
been written about the
postal strike so there's
not much to add except to
reflect that one segment
of the population who
must really miss their
mail are the shut-ins. One
of the brighter spots to
being in hospital (if there
are bright spots) is
receiving a card or letter.
And, again, many a
senior citizen living alone
relies heavily on the mail
for news of loved ones.
Here in the News -
Record office we
received one ordinary
business letter from
Toronto by courier and
the cost to the sender was
$4.95. Thinking of our No.
2 son in Vancouver, I
timidly asked the price of
despatching a birthday
card by courier - my
knees almost buckled
from shock - $12 the
messenger replied
without batting an eye.
Same son, upon arrival in
Vancouver, wrote the one
and only eight page letter
of his life - and it's now
stuck somewhere along
the 2,700 miles betwixt
here and there.

For the kids on Monday

Gary Merner, chair-
man of the' Canadian
National Institute for the
Blind canvass committee,
for the Clinton Kinsmen
Club, reports that the
club raised in excess of
$600 in its door-to-door
canvass in Clinton on
'October 17. This
represents an increase of
about 10 percent over the
1977 figure. Results are
not yet available from the
Lions Club, whose can-
vass covered the
remaining half of the
town on Oct. 24. Final
figures for the campaign
will be published as soon
as the returns are
complete.

Two other service clubs
who have proved their
community spirit by
canvassing are the
Kinettes of Clinton and
the Beta Sigma Phi
Sorority. These two
groups together collected
$755.85 in the Arthritis
Canvass which has just
finished. The two clubs,
collectively, would like to
thank all of those who
helped in the campaign
and those who gave so,
generously. Con-'
tributions can still be
made by sending a
cheque to: The Arthritis
Society, RR2 Walkerton,

Five members of the
Clinton Lawn Bowling
Association, Walter
Newcombe, Dave
Colclough, Ron Mat-
thews, Milford Durst and
Elmer Murray spent last
Sunday afternoon raking
the lawn at the bowling
green. But as well as
working, the beautiful
weather and perfect
condition of the greens
proved a temptation and
they had one last game.
Anybody wishing to
take up this clean sport
next Spring should make
enquiries from that "one
armed bowler" Bert
Grey.

Outdoors
Last week the grade
sevens went to the
Maitland Block which is
located on 'the Maitland
River a few miles south of
Auburn. When we ,got
there, we set our watches
to the correct time, left
our lunches in a garage
and set out to find the
signs with our maps and
directions. We were in
groups of two.
The orienteering was
done by consulting our
maps and directions to
find a sign, copying down
the picture of note on the
sign, and finding another.
After everyone came
back from orienteering,
we cooked our lunches
made of hamburger,
potatoes, carrots or
whatever else we wanted
to add and wrapped in
tinfoil. We then started
the fires and cooked our
dinner. These are called
hobo lunches.
After we had finished
our lunch, picked up the
garbage, and put out our
fires, Mr., Lyon and Mr.
Addison Annbunced w 4,,,
were going to play the
survival game.
Mr. Addison dug up an
ant hill and he now has it
on display in his
classroom.
When the game was
over and everyone was
back from the survival
game, Mr. Addison said
we could get the signs
from the orienteering
game from the morning
for an additional fifty
points.
We were then bussed
back to the school. It was
a very exciting day. by
Renee Lehnen.
