Clinton News-Record, 1978-10-26, Page 2• PAGE 2` ---CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, OCTQBFR 20,1978 Plenty has already been written about the postal strike so there's not much to add except to reflect that one segment of the population who must really miss their mail are the shut-ins. One of the brighter spots to being in hospital (if there are bright spots) is receiving a card or letter. And, again, many a senior citizen living alone relies heavily on the mail for news of loved ones. Here in the News - Record office we received one ordinary business letter from Toronto by courier and the cost to the sender was $4.95. Thinking of our No. 2 son in Vancouver, I timidly asked the price of despatching a birthday card by courier - my knees almost buckled from shock - $12 the messenger replied without batting an eye. Same son, upon arrival in Vancouver, wrote the one and only eight page letter of his life - and it's now stuck somewhere along the 2,700 miles betwixt here and there. +++ For the kids on Monday and Tuesday next week the News -Record will be host to Pudgy the Pumpkin - so come in and meet him and get yourself a Hallowe'en treat. School Students at Grand Blanc (near Flint) Michigan and was found by Mrs. Baker at 4:30 p.m. the same day. But as well as working, the beautiful weather and perfect condition of the greens proved a temptation and they had one last game. Anybody wishing to take up this clean sport next Spring should make enquiries from that "one armed bowler" Bert Grey. xnr Peggy Gibb, right, of the News -Record, accepts a plaque from Bill Riehl of Clinton who won the award from 'the Speciality Advertisers Counsellors of Canada for a promotion of a program in conjunction with another media. (News -Record photo) What's new at CPS upen House was held at Clinton Public School on Monday night, October 23, with a large part of Clinton attending. Pupils tugged on parents' coattails taking them through the school showing them their classroom, library,. projects, art, where they have physical education and Curly, the pet• boa constrictor in the science room, plus other stops along the way. We would like to thank the parents who again displayed an excellent attendance record. Block parents The Block Parent program is gradually 'gaining' momentum but the committee still needs a large number of homes. To be involved you need not be % parent, but can be an interested person wishing to be of service. Working parents c 4.1 be a Block*'`^Parent: `toa. filipse can -display ...their . sign when they are home in the evening. The ideal set up is two (2) Block Parents per block so there is still a ways go go. If you, are interested in completing an application form or asking more questions call the school at 482-9424 or the police station at 482-3435 and ask for Don Armstrong. Let's all help! Outdoors Last week the grade sevens went to the Maitland Block which is located on 'the Maitland River a few miles south of Auburn. When we ,got there, we set our watches to the correct time, left our lunches in a garage and set out to find the signs with our maps and directions. We were in groups of two. The orienteering was done by consulting our maps and directions to find a sign, copying down the picture of note on the sign, and finding another. After everyone came back from orienteering, we cooked our lunches made of hamburger, potatoes, carrots or whatever else we wanted to add and wrapped in tinfoil. We then started the fires and cooked our dinner. These are called hobo lunches. After we had finished our lunch, picked up the garbage, and put out our fires, Mr., Lyon and Mr. Addison Annbunced w 4,,, were going to play the survival game. Mr. Addison dug up an ant hill and he now has it on display in his classroom. When the game was over and everyone was back from the survival game, Mr. Addison said we could get the signs from the orienteering game from the morning for an additional fifty points. We were then bussed back to the school. It was a very exciting day. by Renee Lehnen.
