The Civic Holiday.
As per proclamation by our worthy reeve,
Tuesday last was observed here by our loy-
al and patriotic citizens. as a public holiday.
The day broke very promising. being 'cool
and clear, gladdening the hearts of the citi-
zens who had anticipated a day's outing,
and lending lustre to the already lucent
spirits of the. band men. The band was
out early in full uniform, and discoursed
sweet musk for some time, as if to reininfi
the slumbering ones that the day was one
of life and enjoyment—not repose. Those
who did iiot avail themselves of the excur-
sion to Sarnia either enjoyed tliemselres pie-
nicing at the lake, shootieg, or participating
in some local amusement, such as baseball
or qubit pitching. However the day was
spent, all seemed to enjoy the holiday, and
the various people restnned their avocations
on Wednesday.
The Excureion,
The harvest home exenrsion to Sarnia on
Tuesday, under the auspices of the Exeter
brass band, was not by any means well pa-
tronized. At Exeter station there were over
two hundred got aboard, which, with. a
sprinkling of passengers from the various
stations along the line, &imposed the excur-
sion party. They arrived in Sarnia early in
the forenoon, some of the excursionists
spending the day with friends in town, while
the majority either went t Port Huron or
enjoyed a ricte upon the St. Clair' river. All
seemed to enjoy themselves. The ,train
reached Exeter about 10.05 o'clock, solely
landing the horde of fatigued paesengers.
The excursion was not as well settroniSect by
Exeter people as it should hey° been—stwo
hundred being too few for a plape of Exe-
ter's pretentions to ;fad.
