om the Varna area
The 1979 Fall Rally is to
be held in Varna.
A bountiful turkey
smorgasbord was served
in the Sunday School
room of Varna Church on
Wednesday evening.
People from all of the
surrounding ' towns and
villages attended. Fran
Carpenter of London has
come to our supper for
ten consecutive years,
which is probably a
record for anyone from
that distance.
Brian Chessell, who
had surgery in Clinton
Hospital on Wednesday,
returned home on
Saturday.
Bill and Eleanor
McAsh moved into their
completely renovated
home on Saturday. With
the lovely new
surroundings, all that
hard summer's work will
seem worthwhile.
Rob Witmer, a former
resident of Goderich, and
at present a theology
student in Toronto, was"
the guest speaker for
Goshen Church an-
niversary. Rob
graduated from Queen's
University, Kingston in
1969 and went to Japan as
a short-term missionary.
He became involved as
an. English teacher at
Hokusei Gakuin in
Hokkaido, and with the
help of his wife Kaiko, did
evangelical work in the
coffee houses, par-
ticularly in the Ark.
Before returning to
Canada he was filling
in for a Canadian
missionary couple who
were on furlough, which
kept ' him very busy, as
there are 60 offices and
churches in Hokkaido.
Mr. Witmer compared
the influence of the
Christians in Japan, who
number less than one-
tenth of the population,
with leavening in bread.
You can't really see the
yeast, but it has an effect
on the whole mass. The
church in Canada, in
contrast, is like.a city, on
a" hill, with news" of its
activities reported
regularly in the media.
At the Uohoku Centre in
Nayoro, the church has
considerable influence on
young rural people
through its Three Love
Schools with their -three-
fold theme of Love for,
God, Love for Man, and
Love for the Soil, Noil-
Christians attend the
daily Bible study
sessions, and have a
great deal of respect for
the "guides for living"
taught in the Bible.
Rob and Kaiko led in
the singing of two
Japanese songs. The
junior girls choir sang
"There Were Twelve
Disciples", and the an-
them "I'm Blessed by
God's, Love" was sung.
Following Mr. Witmer's
address, Julie and Jill
Armstrong sang a het,
accompanying them-
selves on their ukuleles
and with Mrs. Bruce
Keys at the organ.
An anniversary supper
is being served next
Wednesday, and " I un-
derstand they are sold out
already.

is week at the Legion
By Rene Brochu
Last Friday's TGIF
attendance draw went
unclaimed once again as
Doug Macaulay's name
was drawn. Doug had
failed to register in the
attendance book, even
though he had been
present during last
Friday's festivities. Our
TGIF raffle prize was
claimed by Bill Munro,
one of our regular
patrons.
This past Monday,
every room in the Legion
was busy with activities.
Our Ladies Auxiliary
served a delicious dinner
in the Ladies lounge to
the OSSTF executive
body, while upstairs, the
Brownies were active at
their meeting, im-
mediately followed by the
Ladies Auxiliary general
meeting. Comrades Anita
Bartliff and Barb Butler
held a Toy Chest Party
and provided a tasty
lunch for the comrades.
Our Legion executive
meeting was also taking
place at the same time in
the Dart Room,
Men's euchre is again
in the fore as every
Tuesday evening when
the men gather for an
evening of cards. If you
haven't as yet made an
appearance, now's the
time to start. Darts are
also just getting started,
so it's not too late to be
counted in every Thur-
sday evening for an
evening of darts.
Further Legion news
includes a zone dance in
the Hensall community
centre, tickets are
available at the Legion
Bar. For those members
who are interested, there

Everyone Welcome
is a District meeting in
Stratford on October 21
and n22.
Comrade Russ Phillips,
our poppy chairman,
wishes to advise the
people of Clinton that the
Legion Poppy Day
canvass will take place
on November 1, so we ask
all people to be generous
on that evening, as our
Legion Vets will be
calling on you again this
year.
Property chairman
Comrade Richard
Fremlin advises us that
the front steps of the
Legion have been
repaired and painted
thanks to the generosity
of one of our • affiliate
members, Barry Irwin.
Our appreciative thanks
to Barry for using his
talents for the benefit of
our Branch.
Did you know that our
Legion now has a new
treasurer. Our Zone
commander Comrade
George (Short) Campbell
was appointed and in-
stalled as treasurer at
our last general meeting.
Anyone having financial
dealings with our branch
of the Legion should
