Clinton News-Record, 1978-10-19, Page 2?AGE 2--CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1978
This is Tuesday night
and watching T.V. and
writing Town Talk is
somewhat less than a
good combination. But,
just this once, I must
keep one eye on the boob
tube. The baseball season
can come and go and its
TV coverage never in-
terests me - but World
Series fever always gets
me. Being an avid
Dodger fan, I am, at this
moment, being tortured
as the Yankees lead 3-1 in
the second inning. I'll add
a postscript tomorrow
morning.
So enough of the gib-
berish and on with the
column.

Mr. and Mrs. James
Sturgeon, Princess Street
West, had a happy time
this week when, after 32
years, they were reunited
with Mrs. Sturgeon's
sister and niece here for a
two week holiday from
England.
This was a special
occasion as it occurred on
Thanksgiving weekend.
Mrs. Sturgeon's brother
from the United States,
whom she had not seen
for • five years, was also
present to complete the
family scene.
Extending hospitality
to Mrs. Sturgeon's sister
and niece were Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Florian of
Clinton, Mrs. Berthena
Hammond of Bayfield
and Mr. and Mrs. Robert
McCool of Londesboro.
The visitors were very
impressed with the
friendliness of the Clinton
people and also with the
beauty of the scenery and
colours of the trees.

Speakers for the two days

interest to collectors
were the excellent
specimens of minerals,

Avoid hunting accidents, OPP warn
Once again the hunting
season is here. The
Ontario Provincial Police
Force reminds you that
there are several 'basic
gun -handling rules.
Hunting accidents
claim about 125 lives each
year, usually because the
most simple rules have
been broken.
What can you do?
Never consume alcohol
before or during a hunt.
Know the identifying
features of the game you
intend to hunt. Never
shoot in the direction of
buildings or livestock.
You cannot depend on
the 'common sense of the
hunter beside you --wear
bright orange.
The handling of
firearms requires great
care. Always handle a
gun as if it were loaded.
Never climb a tree or
fence with a loaded
firearm. Always carry
your gun so that you can
control the direction of
the muzzle. Unattended
firearms should always
be unloaded.
Few hunting deaths are
Rec, committee looking
into pool alternatives
by Shelley McPhee
With a canvass already going to try
to install the new arena floor, and
estimates received for the proposed.
new pool at a high price, the Clinton
rec.committee may be forced to find a
suitable alternative to constructing a
new pool facility.
One suggestion was discussed at the
rec committee's meeting last Thursday
night when a letter was read from
Dianne Durnin, recreation co-ordinator
at the Vanastra Recreation Centre.
She suggested that rather than
building a new pool, Clinton support the
existing Vanastra indoor pool. She
listed a number of advantages to using
the Vanastra pool including: only three
miles from Clinton; ,fits year round use
with an air temperature of 80-85
degrees F. and a pool temperature of 85
degrees F.; they have qualified, local
instructors; implement the Red Cross
system of awards, Red Cross courses,
leaders courses, bronze medal classes,
adult and synchronized swimming
classes; the rec centre also has a
sauna, an equipped gymnasium, a
canteen and a hall.
The letter suggests that it would only
cost the child their swimming fees and
transportation costs to take lessons at
Vanastra.
It went on, that Clinton is not only
faced with building a new pool but also
must deal with bad weather, trying to
hire summer help, maintenance dif-
ficulties and wage costs.
"With the price of pools it might be
worthwhile," Dean Reid suggested.
" Ron McKay added, "This makes a lot
of sense. The busing is okay for lessons
but what if the kids want to go swim-
ming on an afternoon. I don't want my
kids biking out there.. Would it be
cheaper to buy a bus and offer half-
hour service?"
"To drive three miles in the city
takes 15 minutes, but you could get to
Vanastra in five minutes.," Reid noted.
Reid emphasized the fact that he
liked to see Clinton have their own pool
as much as anyone else but added,
"Every community can't have every
facility. It's too expensive."
He went on, "Everyone's putting
pools in their back yards now. In a few
years we may have an expensive pool
with no one using it."
,Reid, who is in charge of the pool
project intends getting some more
estimates on the cost of a new pool and
the costs to repair the existing struc-
ture. Those prices will be compared to
the cost of a bus, other vehicle to
transport swimmers to Vanastra.

Clintonians plan
dinner
The October meeting of
the Clintonian club was
held in the Town Hall
with 15 present: The
president, Pearl Cunt,
mings opened the
meeting, and the
treasurer Viola Lamp -
man gave the financial
report. Irne Glazier gave
the flower and card
report, reporting 73 home
calls, a lot of these had
been made at Huronview
and six hospital made to
sick and shutins. They
will send $10 to the blind.
The anniversary dinner
will be held at the Bed-
ford Hotel on November 7
at noon. Cars will leave
the Wesley Willis Church
at 11:45 am, so, if you
haven't been picked up by
your driver, be at the
church. Dinner will be
paid by the club if you
have attended eight
meetings; however, if you
want dessert, each one
has to pay for it and your
transportation which is
$1. It was decided that our
anniversary cake and ice
cream will be served in
the New Year rather than
at our November
meeting.
There will be • an
election of officers at the
November meeting, and
it was approved to send
the Salvation Army a
donation in November.
Pearl looked after the
Dutch auction with
everyone winning an
article. Irne Glazier won-
the
onthe mystery prize.
The program included
readings by Pearl
Cummings and Margaret
Moodie. Edna Adams and
Josie Cunningham will
bring articles for the
November Dutch auction
and everyone is to bring a
couple of sandwiches as
we are having a cup of tea
at our . November
meeting.
