School gets equipment
Well we finally have
them! Mr. Ross installed
the two climbers that
were purchased for our
school. Last Friday the
cement was cured, and
with the co-operation of a
few Conestoga students,
we were able to try them
out. They were certainly
worth the wait. We didn't
realize that it was
possible to get four dozen
boys and girls on one
climber at the same time.
For those who have
been asking, we will be
having our first "Open
House" for this school
year on Thursday,
October 19, from 7:00-9:00
pm. This night is being
planned to provide
parents with a chance to
meet their child's new
teacher and to see the
school.
It will not be an in-
terview night. However,
parents, who do wish
interviews, are reminded
that they can be arranged
at any time during the
school year simply by
calling the school at 482-
7a28, .Did you know? ;
That our enrolment on
September 5 was 131; that
we have two new
teachers - Mrs. B. Hazlitt
and Mr. W. Nicholls; that
we have two new clim-
bers on the playground;
that most of our pupils
are taking part in our
swimming program; that
some people in our
community are trying to
start a Block Parents
program; that Mr.
McConnell is running a
Cross Country Club.
The boys and girls of
the Vanastra Public
School are getting in-
volved in a Rhythmics
Program. Parents are
urged to consider snacks
that are nutritious. Those
foods do so much more
for everyone than the
traditional "junk foods."
Each month, in order to
encourage proper
nutrition, a nutrition
work sheet will be at-
tached. This sheet would
make an excellent family
project.
Nursery school is active
for fall events
The Vanastra Nursery
School is well into its fall
semester with great
attendance and an
abundance of activities.
The children have
enjoyed a complete
morning of finger
painting, creative day of
puzzles, modeling clay,
work bench and kitchen
play. Last week they
made turkeys and
prepared a Thanksgiving
dinner of pictures and put
it on a placemat.
Plans are well un-
derway for our
Hallowe'en Party. There
will be costume judging,
treats and games. This
will be on Tuesday,
October 31. Nursery
School is held every
Tuesday and Thursday
morning from 10-11:30 am.
The fee is $2 a month for
the first child and $1 for
each child after in the
family. Please contact
Sandy McLachlan at 482-
9581 for any information.

Helpful Hints
Try using a gravy boat
when filling jam or jelly
jars. It can be dipped into
the hot liquid by the
handle, and the spout can
fit in most jar openings.
Remove fat from hot
soup by putting an ice
cube in a thin cloth, and
swishing it back and forth
in the soup. The fat will
gather on the cloth.
Put a piece of waxed
paper directly on top of
stews, soups, etc, before
refrigerating. When the
liquid has cooled, peel the
paper off and the fat will
come off with it.
Thicken your stews,
gravy, or sauces with
instant mashed potatoes.
Put a bit in the liquid and
stir. The lumps will
dissolve quickly
Coffee Cake
Beat: 1 cup white
sugar, 1/2 cup margarine,
2 eggs.
Add: 1 cup sour cream,
1 tsp. vanilla, 2 cups flour,
1 tsp. baking powder, 1
tsp. baking soda.
Put half of batter in
greased angel food cake
pan. Sprinkle half of this
mixture on top: 1/2 cup
chopped nuts, 2 tsps.
cinnamon, 1/4 cup sugar.
Cover with remaining
batter and sprinkle
remaining sugar mixture
