Ted Mack, Les Elliott,
Grant Turner, Mel
Davidson, Reg Francis,
Mert Merner and Walter
Westlake.
Officers elected were:
fire chief, Walter
Westlake who acted as
Chief for 20 years;
president Ernie Hovey;
vice-president, Grant
Turner; secretary, Reg
Francis; and treasurer,
Les Elliott.
In 1947, the village
trustees were Lloyd
Scotchmer, Mel Davidson
and Jack Sturgeon Sr.
They purchased a pump
and motor in Goderich
which later was turned
over to the Fire
Association by "the
Council. Over the years,
there have been many
additions to the equip-
ment. A cistern with a
3,000 gallon capacity was
constructed and a City of
London used fire truck
was purchased in 1968.
The original vehicle
had been a four-wheel
drive army truck costing
$800 with a 500 gallon tank
mounted on it which was
dug out of the ground at
the Bayfield,Garage with
picks and shovels. It was
kept in the Mackenzies'
unheated garage (now
the Clifts). To keep the
water from freezing in
xe tank a Quebec heater,
then a space heater and
finally an oil furnace was
used. These were fired by
Ted Mack, Les Elliott,
and later Walter
Westlake.
Finally, land was
leased for 100 years and
an old building was
purchased from Lloyd
Scotchmer for $100. and
the lumber used from it to
build a firehall for which
the new doors bought in
-1959 cost $540.
- Initially, an appelu .4foxi` 4, w
funds was made and the
first donation was from
W.R. Jowett for $1,000.
Fund raising events
followed, carnivals and
dances and grants from
Goderich and Stanley
townships have financed
the Association.
On October 28, the
Association will hold
'Open House' in the
firehall. From 10-12 noon
a baby-sitting session will
take place and from 1-4
p.m. the hall will be open
to the public.
