Happening
Plowing match
On Thursday, Sep-
tember 28, grades 1 to 8
took a field trip to the
International Plowing
Match. All classes en-
joyed it thoroughly and
learned a great deal from
the trip.
Class reps
elected
This year at Hullett,
one or two pupils were
elected from each class
for the students council.
Their jobs are to report
to their class what goes
on at the meetings.
They will do their best
to attend each meeting.
Grade 8 trips
On Thursday Sep-
tember 21, the grade
eight class visited the
Londesboro seed cleaning
plant. The class was
shown how straw was
separated from seed.
Separating the seeds they
learned, was called
screening the seeds. They
enjoyed the trip very
much.
Also on Thursday, the
grade eight class went to
T.B. Allen's Mill to see
how the machines there
run and to see what some
of the switches there
were used for.
They then went to the
boiler room to see the
procedure of making
pellets. This was found
educational and enjoyed
by all.
On Friday, September
22, the grade eight class
again left the school, for a
. trip to Boven's Poultry
and Pig Farm in Kin -
burn. Mr. Boven has
about 2,000 pigs and about
1,500 chickens-.
All .of these trips were
part of a science unit on
farming.
Lions plan
new project
BY WILMA OKE
Representatives from
Zone 3, District , A9 of
Lions International at a
meeting in Seaforth
Tuesday night -were ' in-
formed of a new money -
raising project that will
help handicapped people.
Eric Eastwood of Port
Elgin chairman of the
district handicapped
persons committee
outlined the formation of
P.R.I.D.E. Multicap
Foundation (Productive
Rehabilitation and
Independent Develop-
ment through
Employment).
Established in 1977 to
meet a perceived need of
persons who have the
potential to develop to a
stage beyond the ex-
tensive training received
at vocational
rehabilitation centres, so
that they may live up to
the true level of their
capabilities.
P.R.I.D.E, developed a
small shop in June 1978 at
350 Saskatoon Street in
London where physically,
mentally or emotionally
handicapped adults work.
As a start, large plastic
candy canes are
assembled, filled with
candies and prepared for
shipping and in some
cases delivered to an
adult by a handicapped
driver.
The Lions Clubs of
Multiple District A are
providing the initial.
market for the candy
cones which the members
will sell in their in-
dividual areas. Multiple
District A covers Ontario,
parts of Northern Quebec
and Labrador.
The Lions Clubs will
realize a profit and will
supply much needed
employment for han-
dicapped persons.
Twelve handicapped
persons are working at
the shop, managed by Ed
Kincaid of London who is
himself blind. Eventually
the board of directors of
P.R.I.D.E. made up of 12
concerned volunteer
• 'citizens from the London
community, hope to have
140 workers by June 1979.
They may come from
any area in Multiple "A"
from sheltered
workshops recommended
by government agencies
but they must apply for
the work themselves.
