John the Baptist introduced Jesus with the words, "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:29. Jesus would die as a 'substitute in the place of all men. The unmeasured, righteous judgment of God against sinners was borne by Christ. In the Old Testament animal sacrifices were offered which could cover sin only in the sense of delaying the time of righteous judgment. In His sacrifice Christ removed the guilt of sin by bearing its penalty. Isaiah 53: 5, 6. The death of Christ has removed all moral hindrances in the mind of God to saving sinners. God has been propitiated and the way has been opened for men to be reconciled. It is because of the death of Christ that God can invite men to turn to Him for salvation and eternal life.
