HP sauce, 1/a tsp. pepper, 1 bay leaf, 1/8 tsp. basil, 6 tomatoes (or 1 28 oz. can tomatoes with liquid, but reduce water to 3 cups. Stir in tomatoes with remaining ingredients and heat to boiling. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 20 minutes.) In a large saucepan, cook and stir meat until brown. Dram off fat. Cook and stir onions with meat until they are tender .(approx. 5 minutes) Stir in remaining ingredients except fresh tomatoes and heat to boiling. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 20 minutes. Add fresh tomatoes, cover and simmer 10 minutes longer or until vegetables are tender. Serves 6. Helpful Hints Slice a small pocket in a sponge and insert the pieces of soap that are not used up. The soapy sponge can be used for bathing, cleaning pots and pans, scrubbing Put marbles in the bottom of a double boiler. When the water boils, down, the marbles will rattle, enough to let you know the pot is dry. To avoid a crust forming Inside the lids and edges of mustard, chili sauce, honey jars etc. put a piece of platic wrap over the top of the jar before screwing the lid on. Community notes Resource Centre news Story Hour will start this Saturday, September 23 at 1 pm at the Resource Centre for children ages 3-5 years of age. We need a few more volunteers. If anyone is interested, please call Edna Jeffrey at 482-7972. Lions Club news The next regular meeting of the Vanastra and District Lions Club is Wednesday September 20th. The club is spon- soring a dance this Friday, September 22, featuring the "Lincoln Green" Calorie Counters The regular meeting of the Vanastra Calorie Counters was held on Monday, September 18. Next week the meeting will begin at 7:30 pm and all ladies are invited to at- tend. Public school in shape Lloyd Percival in his article "facts about fitness" pointed out that Canadian society is generally suffering from the ""terrible triad" - under activity, over tension and over eating. With this in mind the pupils of the Vanastra Public School are being introduced to a rythmics based exercise program. This program has been designed to provide a maximum amount of Nursery school starts On September 19, Nursery School officially opened in Vanastra. The staff this year consists of Sadie Sheppard, letter class; Elaine Sherban, arts and crafts; Joanne Heron, numbers; Jan Ferguson, playtime. Part, time teachers are Sandy McLachlan, Glenda Gardner, Edna Arthur and Kathleen Stone. Dianne Ryan co- ordinator of nursery school is in charge of organizing and the supervision of" all the programs for the yeare Through the generous donation from the Family and Children's Services in Goderich, the school was given a kitchen centre, a work bench, a sand and water table, a rocking boat, ironing board and table, balancing beam, toy chest and storage cabinets. They were also given a generous donation from the Resource Centre to purchase working sup- plies for the school. Up to this date they have 14 children registered. Nursery School helps children to adjust to Kindergarten. If you feel your child might benefit from this program, feel free to come in to check out the programs and facilities. The staff are willing to take any new registrations on Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am, the fee is only $2 a month for one child and an ad- ditional $1 for each child Cubs, Brownies Guides meet Cub News This year, Cubs will be held in the Vanastra Recreation Centre. The meetings will be held on Monday nights for four consecutive weeks then on Saturday mornings for two weeks. The Monday night meetings will be' starting at 6:30 pm to 8 pm and the Saturday mornings from 10 am to 11:30 am. This change is due to the fact that one of the leaders is working shifts. We started our first meeting on Monday, September 18. ..On Thursday Sep- tember 21st, the Vanastra Brownies and Guides will be out selling, calendars after school. The up tempo music used provides, the needed motivation and makes the program fun to do. It is hoped that, once everyone is familiar with the routines, daily ac- tivity sessions will . be programed into our timetables. By June, it is Our swimming program starts on. Friday, September 29. The program dates are as follows: Sept. 29, Oct. 6, Oct. 13; Oct. 20, Oct. 27, Nov. 3, June 15, June 22. The grade two pupils will accompany the grade four and five pupils and will use the pool from 10:45 to 11:05. Grade 3 •will swim from 11:05 to 11:25. Grade 1 will ac- company grades five and six and will use the pool from 11:25 to 11:45. A plastic grocery bag, with the child's name on the outside, makes an excellent storage con- tainer at the pool. Children are reminded to bring a towel. Wednesday September 27th is a Professional Activity Day. There will be no regular classes at the Vanastra Public School that day. We are, again this year, making use of the Huron County Library in Goderich. Last Thursday, Mr. Ross picked up about 200 new library books. These books will be used by our pupils for the next - four weeks, when they will then be exchanged for a new batch. They then finished their project from last week and .were enthusiastic about completing their felt parrots to be used on a refrigerator. Their next regular meeting will be held on Friday, September 22 from 4 to 5 pm. Both boys and girls ages 7-11 years are invited to attend. Teen Club The Van'astra Teen Club met at the Resource Centre. on Friday evening. It was decided to postpone elections until September 29th. Sharon Goulding was nominated to run as president. On the 29th, the Teen Club will also go bowling. There will be no meeting on September 22 due to the Vanastra Lions Fall Fling and most teens are babysitting. We hope to see all teens on Sep- tember 29 at 7 pm. Huro Brd n l The Huron County Board of Education will make use of negotiator Fred Reeves in its 1979 dealings with its em- ployees deciding Monday night to honor the second year of Reeves' two-year pact with the board: Reeves was employed of Education to use negotiator in '79 by Huron County in 1978 to assist in contract talks with the board's elementary 'and secon- dary school teachers, its secretarial employees and custodians, all of which work under con- tract with the board. The board hired Reeves through the Ontario Public School Trustees Association on a co- operative basis with Bruce and Grey Counties. The OPSTA pays •the salary for the negotiator and collects one-third of those costs from each of the boards making use of his services. As well as their share of the salary each board is charged for secretarial help, mileage and telephone used by Reeves while working for that county and each is to provide office space for him. The Huron board was required to give six months notice if it wanted out of the second year of the,deal and that notice was to be given this month.
