BAYFIELD bugle wen Pemberton Lions give 3,000 to arena fund On Tuesday September 12th Bayfield Lions met at the Albion Hotel for the first dinner meeting of the season with president Jack Boyes in charge. Their guest, Governor Jack Bishop of Kitchener, presented an informative and constructive talk on "Lionism". Also at this meeting it was revealed that the profit from the Pancake Breakfast on September 3 was $596.95. It was decided to transfer $3000.00 to the Bayfield Arena Fund. The total amount to date raised for the new arena by Bayfield Lions is $8000. Lion John Siertsema announced that the arena contract has been. let and preparation for con- struction has already begun. Completion date is January 15th 1979. A total of $35,000 has already been raised by Bayfield and area residents with the goal now set at $90,000. At the next meeting September 26 the Lions will have a return visit from the Port Sanilac Lions of Michigan. Library series set The Huron County Library Board will be sponsoring a weekly series of discussions in two area libraries this fall on topics of interest to families. The series is called "Family Forum". Through video tape, books and discussion the leader will attempt to relate our present life- style to the great per- sonalities of history. Weekly programs will open up various family issues • such as adolescence, family life- styles life changes and a wide range of other topics of interest to par- ticipants. The sessions will be informal and will continue for six weeks. All members of the community are welcome. The libraries chosen for the first series are Bayfield and' Goderich. Moira Couper of Bayfield is to host this series. Moira represents this area on the Ontario Educational Com- munications Authority (O.E.C.A.) and, brings considerable experience in adult and family education The series will begin in Bayfield on Thursday, October 12 from 1 pm to 3 pm. There were 2 Rresent. Registration for Scouts, Brownies, Cubs and Guides was held at Bayfield this week. Here, Dpug Roy,, left, registers with David Renner and Carol Fisher. (photo by Gwen Pemberton) Round about the village Sunday dinner guests with the Penhales were Mr. and Mrs, Faber, Kippen, Dianne Brad and Lori De Wys, Varna, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Meyer, Suzanne Madonna and Debbie. The occasion was Debbies birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Hodgins of Dorchester spent Sunday with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Parker. Dr. and Mrs. Smale of Midland called on Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Makins on Sunday. Miss Kay Reid reported that the coach trip to the Maritimes from which she returned on Saturday was most enjoyable. Other residents of Bayfield on the 15 day trip were Mrs. Jean Bell,: Mrs. Jessie Blair and Mrs. Lulu Smith. The Bayfield Council meeting held regularly on Monday • night was postponed until Wed- nesday this week. • The Bayfield correspondent had as guests for the. weel1end her two nieces Rosalind and Vivienne Pemberton from Godalming, Surrey, England. They began their first visit to Canada at , Niagara Falls where their aunt met them . They expressed a wish to go sailing while in Bayfield and had their wish fulfilled through the kindness of Mr. Bill Elliott of the South Shore Marina. They visited Tober- mory and the University of Western Ontario, were entertained at tea by Mr. and Mrs. Elmer- Parker and were guests at the Little Inn for dinner on Sunday evening. They met their cousins Mr. and Mrs. Eric Pemberton for lunch at the Ben Miller Inn on Monday going on as their guests to Waterloo. They will visit their other cousins Miss Joan Pemberton and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Pemberton in Toronto later in the week. Visitors through the summer at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Larson were: Mr! and Mrs. Steve Holomis, Orangeville and her mother and father Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Knutson of Saskatoon, S -ask. and • Mr. and Mrs. Chester Larsen of Kelowna, B.C. Jean Greer, was in charge of the devotional part of the meeting. She was assisted by Margaret Scotchrner and Vivian Morton. Rev. Alun Thomas was the guest speaker and described his work in Newfoun- dland in the five churches that were his special concern. As he spoke of his two years of ministry there the ladies realized that. both Rev. Thomas and his congregations grew in the tIZ .-. Christian faith as. they exchanged . ideas. Elva Metcalf thanked the speaker for his in- formative talk. Jean Greer • closed the devotions with a prayer, A short business meeting was held and the various summer ac- tivities were reported on. Plans for a joint thank- -offering meeting on October 12th were discussed. A delicious lunch was served by Violet Carter, Jean Greer Esther Makins and Bridal shower held A bridal shower honouring Miss Bonnie Cox bride -elect of Saturday, October 23 was held in St. Andrews United Church basement on Monday evening, September llth. Contests, a sing -song with Molly Cox at the piano and a reading by Wendy Penhale were enjoyea Teri Weber read the address to Bonnie and she was assisted in opening her gifts by her sisters Cheryl Trewartha and Pat Hemingway and her mother Elva Cox. Bonnie thanked everyone very graciously. Lunch was served. Baptist Church news by Janet Talbot The Bayfield Baptist Church began Sunday services with Sunday School at 10 a.m. with classes for all ages from nursery to adult Bible class. Then for the Worship service the Pastor Rev. Les Sheil continued in the study of the four anchors used on the Sea of Life. The special music for the day was supplied by Herb Bridle who sang two beautiful solos, "Jesus call us" and "At Calvary". ' Smile . Carol Fisher presided over the Unit I1 meeting of United Church Women held in the church basement on Wednesday afternoon, September 13. Marilyn Haw and Ruth Makins developed the theme "School Days for Ml Ages". It was moved to send the usual amount and include a birthday and Christmas gift to the units foster child in South America. A donation was made to the Drug Con- cern Program. Thanks was expressed to all those who helped at the Church pte booth at the fair* A committee was formed to purchase curtains for windows and for dividing of Sunday School rooms. The unit has been asked to serve lunch at the CNIB meeting in Clinton in November.
