Clinton News-Record, 1978-09-14, Page 12PAGE 12—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 14, 1978 Ladies tops in softball The Clinton Housewives dumped the Goderich Elevators in two straight games to wire the Huron Central Ladies Softball league cham- pionship. The Housewives defeated Goderich 16-8 in the first game of the Series in Goderich, Wednesday and wrapped the championship with an 8-7 victory in Clinton, Thursday. Clinton advanced to the final with a sweep of their best -of -three semi-final series against the Goderich Superstars and the Elevators eliminated Lucknow in similar fashion. A seven run outburst in the fifth inning of the first game proved to be the difference as it moved, the Housewives into a 14-4 lead. After scoring three runs in the first inning, Goderich was limited to a single run in the third inning and added four in the sixth inning. Clinton was forced to come from behind in the second game of the series and rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk. Goderich had opened the game with four runs in the first inning but Clinton replied with a four -run rally in their half of the first. Goderich took a three -run lead with two runs in the third inning.a single marker in the fourth. But Clinton rallied from the deficit with the tying runs in the sixth inning and held Goderich off the basepaths in the seventh inning to set the stage for their game winning run. The Clinton Crown Sluggers won the league B title this year as they dumped their coun- terparts, Clinton Buruma Construction, in two straight games, 15-14 and 21-7. This year nine area ' teams competed in the league and they will hold their annual dance at Saltford Hall, October 13. Stangs open camp Fri. The Clinton Mustangs of the Central Junior 'C' League Group II open their training camp this Friday night (Sept. 15th) at Vanastra at 9 p.m. The camp runs for two weeks with Friday, September 29 being the last day. The 'Stangs open their season Sunday, October 15 when they travel to Port Elgin to battle the Bears. Any players that naturally speaking are interested in playing for the 'Stangs this season should be dressed and on the ice by 9 p.m. Practises and training camp will be held at Vanastra due to the renovating of the Clinton Community Centre. The 'Stangs will have a new coach this season! Don Elliott has been given the task of forming together a winning club. When someone poaches a deer, it is out and out theft! I've often heard this statement before, but not until I had talked to Roy Bellanger of the ministry of natural resources did I have any idea of the total effect it had. The figures that came to light in our discussion were simply amazing. Let's examine the hypothetical case of one poached deer by starting at the bottom. Every year, thousands of hunters head for the woods to try and ..bag one of the elusive whitetails. Each" of these hunters buys himself (or herself) a deer license for $10. Since the provincial success ratio for deer hunters is approximately 18 per cent, that means that more than $50 in licenses is spent for each deer bagged. Not very much you say, but let's dig a little deeper and see what happens. Every year, I head out on my annual hunt with a group of friends and spend a wgek in the.bush. We share all of the immediate and related costs involved and figure that amounts to about $75 per person. Taking this as an average cost, (there are some groups and individuals with lower expenses, and a lot with higher ones) this means that each deer bagged on the provincial average has a value of about $425 in licenses and the actual hunt. Getting up there eh? Let's look even deeper. How about that rifle ($250) and that scope ($100), or that sleeping bag that was needed ($75) and that warm jacket and boots. What about the gas used on the trip up north, and the meals along the way. Let's not forget about the old bottle of snake bite remedy that was tucked into -the duffle bag either. This list can go on and on, but I think you're probabl'getting the idea. There is a lot of money spent, money that goes into our economy to make it stronger every year by hunters doing things the legal way. Since the estimated harvest of deer in Ontario is slightly over 15,000, I feel safe in stating that over $7,500,000 is spent each year by hunters after deer alone. The government estimates that the total spent by hunters in 1977 alone was $21,013,000. That is a lot of money in anybody's book. Since poaching is estimated to equal, or even surpass the legal bag, someone is robbing us of a lot of money. It's no longer smart or fun to be a poacher, it's an out and out theft from your neigh, boors and friends. I feel that poaching §hould end and hope you do too. Next week, I'll outline "what to do" if you see someone poaching. Hunters! The post office may go out on strike any time, and that's where you have to buy your Migratory Game Bird permit. The Arthur Screaming Eagles were accepted by a vote of 5 to 1 in Walkerton on August 28th.
