Swift Honey By Steve Cooke Sunday, September 10th heralds the seventh ,Annual .Sportsmen's Waterfowl Day at Darlington Provincial Park, near Oshawa. All indications are that this ' event wiltbe one of the biggest and best yet. This .special day is co- sponsored by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Ministry of Natural Resources, and is designed to demonstrate to the public the arts and skills of waterfowling and foster' an awareness of the importance of waterfowl management. The complete schedule of events has been planned w to be entertaining as well as in- formative. Bullfrog races, held regularly throughout the day, are one of the fun filled activities planned, and all small fry are invited to participate, with the frogs being provided. For the youngsters, there's also a supervised target shoot and a decoy head whittling com- petition where, with wood and tools supplied, budding carvers can test their skills. Not to be missed, . is the hip -boot race where the con- testants race along a bog lined coin se of marshy obstacles to a soggy finish line. Retriever han- dling exhibitions, wildlife art displays and an auction are also part of the festivities. The big event, of course, for which the Waterfowl Day is famous, is the decoy carving contest. Competition will be fierce for the three' carving classes; open, working and junior, which will be on display along with the collec- tions of antique decoys 'in one or the two big tents. Seasoned collectors will be on hand to answer questions about this fascinating facet of waterfowling. New this year will be an auction of some of the top working decoys entered in competition along with a smattering of decoys from previous years crafted by such notable carvers as Al Glassford, Paul Burdette and Earl Newhall. All in all, this event should prove to be both highly enlightening as well as a lot of fun. If you don't have anything planned for this weekend,'it may not be a bad idea to pack up the family and duck out to Darlington for the show. was third for her new owner Ron McBride of Goderich with Randy Henry on the bike, Jerry Duford finished third with Merrywood Hoot for owner Nancy Holmes of Clinton at Greenwood on August 29.
