With last week's 1-0 win over Serbia of London, this puts them tied in second place in the standings. Kip Clinton opened the scoring on Sunday after 15 minutes of play when a perfect cross from the right wing found Brian Newington who then beat one player and slipped it past the opposition goalkeeper. Bill Bennett of Seaforth gave Nota Slowpoke her fifth win of the year, timed in 2:12, in winning the fourth. He owns the nine-year-old mare by Julep Time, a son of Good Time, in part- nership with Don Carter of Seaforth. From 23 starts in 1978, Nota Slowpoke has also had five seconds and four thirds. Her best mile was Oa 2:06.3 last year. Dale Kennedy of Seaforth was fourth with his Jeffrey Hi in the same race. Reggie Ford, owned and trained by Charles Brindley of Goderich was driven to his fourth victory this year 'by Jack Meriam. The 12 -year-old gelding by Glenford- Miss Judy Bars paced his mile in 2:09.1. Frank Mac MacDonald finished second with o1dies, Hit, for„„ Terry Rutledge of Clinton, ,with John Jewitt of Lon- desbordgetting third with his Skippy Del. Tony Bay paced his fastest winning mile this year when he won the seventh in 2:09.2 with Ross Battin driving. The seven-year-old gelding by Skippys Pride C is trained by Walter Pepper for owners G. Ross McEwan and Lorne Brown of Clinton. From 14 starts this year, Tony Bay has had three wins, three seconds and three thirds. Swift Honey finished second for driver Randy Henry aid owner Arnold Doak in a 2:08.2 mile in the eighth. The five -year - mare by Joanies Pony, a son of Gene Abbe, was claimed for $5,000 by Ronald McBride of Goderich. In the seconf half it was all Portuguese as Hellmann in goal for Clinton was bombarded with dozens of shots but together with a defence which played magnificently, held on until the final whistle. Hellmann was ap- plauded throughout the second half by a partisan Portuguese crowd and was congratulated by every member of the opposing team for his heroic efforts. Qualifying races are held at 12:30 p.m. with post time at 1:30 p.m. village merchants plan to open their stores during the week of September 26 to 30. Along with special advertising and the possibility of banners flying at both ends of the village, it was decided to bring the "School Show" back to the Blyth Memorial Hall from August 26 to August 30 for evening and matinee performances. Mitchell has just finished with its popular drawing attraction for the summer, the annual cornfest. The Mitchell Advocate reported that over 5,000 people attended the weekend events and ate some 7,000 cobs. of corn. The heavy downpour on Saturday did not seem.to dampen appetites or interest for . the many activities including bed races, frog races, bathtub races, pole climbs and arm wrestling matches. The Listowel Banner informed its readers that the cost for a subscription to the newspaper will be increasing. Effective immediately the price ,of the Banner will go up to $14 a year or 35 cents for a single copy from the news stand. The Banner cited the reason for the increase due to the ,rising costs of other things including printing costs, gagoline rices, postage rates, ge increases etc. w The Seaforth PUC is presently studying a new schedule • for town residents who are being charged for filling swimming pools. The Huron Expositor reported that town of- ficials aired some complaints that it didn't seem reasonable for the PUC to charge a 20 per cent profit on top of the charge of the wages for the PUC employee who supervised the filling, plus a charge for the PUC truck . and metering to establish the amount of water used. Chairman Gordon Pullman said, "that sounds like robbery to the average person, no businessmen on Main Street could do business oharging like this." Although PUC manager Tom Phillips felt it was reasonable, he was instructed to revise the fee according to the size of the pool so that an applicant would know. what to expect in the way of charges. Out of town applicants will continue to be charged double for the fee charged to Seaforth residents. It was reported in the St. Marys Journal Argus that people in Perth County are making better use of the 31 public schools than they ever have before. Total community use of. the schools rose to 10,313 hours this year as At the touch of your thum • compared with 9,146 hours a year ago. The five county high schools were in use for 5,244 of those hours while community hours at the public schools came to 5,069. Although the strike is over, production is still behind at the Fleck Manufacturingplant in Huron Park. According to the Exeter Times -Advocate, there are no striking workers on the produc- tion line yet and it will be about three weeks before any of them return. As well, it is unlikely that it will be some time before the plant reaches its pre -strike production level. Sales orders and contracts were lost during the 163(day strike. Music and happiness will be flowing in Kin- cardine this past weekend when third annual bluegrass festival will have taken place. The Kincardine News reported on the upcoming three-day event which was to feature five top bluegrass bands. Some 300 camp sites were set up to house the overnight listeners. on the festival's grounds at Connaught Park. The event was to be held either rain or shine. On Sunday morning an interdenominational church service was held by Father Terry of St. Anthony's Church. Although the new centre has been func- tional for a few months, a host of political dignitaries and local officials were to be ' on hand for an official ribbon cutting ceremony. A number of sporting and social activities were held in conjunction with the special ceremonies. The Brussels Post reported that Morris Township has selected a new clerk for the town- ship. Mrs. Nancy (Lloyd) Michie was hired to, , replace Jane Badley who resigned earlier in the year. , Mrs. Michie will be setting the municipal office in her home and will receive , any necessary assistance from Mrs. Badley, presently,, the clerk in Grey Township.
