drop ball. Dan allowed
only two hits, walked one,,
and struck out six bat-
ters.
'Butch Fleet pitched the
last inning as Colquhoun
developed soreness in his
shoulder. Butch struck
out two batters in gaining
his second Tye of the
season.

By Steve Cooke
The common milkweed is well known to most
people on the North American continent.
Children readily recognize it by the white milky
sap that is exuded from the stem when cut or
broken. It is the white sap which everyone knows
about. I'm sure you've all heard how the sap,
when smeared on warts, will magically make
them disappear, and how the sap, when dried
can be used as chewing gum.
While both these notions are firmly engrained
in the folklore of our country, I would personally
hesitate to rely on the wart cure 4 a sure fire
thing, and I can.certainly think of things I would
much sooner chew than the dried sap.
The milkweed does, however, in its abun-
dance, provide me with several dishes of which I
am quite fond. Another plus is the fact that milk-
weed can be harvested from early spring until
late summer. '
In the early spring, the young shoots are yet
another substitute for asparagus. Pick the shoots
before they start to uncurl and remove the fuzz
with a light rubbing action: To cook, simply boil
for two or three minutes to remove the milky
latex, then drain and simmer in fresh water until
tender. If you find the taste too sharp for your
liking, try a few additional changes of water in
the cooking process. We prefer to serve the
shoots lightly buttered and covered with a cheese
sauce.
The flower heads, when they are still in the bud
stage, are our substitute for broccoli. They are
best picked when still a grey -green shade, before
any colour starts to appear. The initial colour is
not very appetizing, but after the first quick
boiling (3 - 4 min.) the buds take on a lovely
bright green colour. Only one change of water is
required, and a total cooking time of ap-
proximately eight minutes gives you a very tasty
cooked vegetable., Serve this one up with just a
touch of salt and butter.
My favourite from the milkweed plant, and the
easiest to recognize is the young seed pods. The
young pods are just starting to form now, so the
next two or three weeks should give you some
delightful eating. Pick the pods when they are
still young and fairly small. If they feel elastic to
the touch, they may be a bit too ripe and tend to
be a bit fibrous for the average palate. If this is
the case, try to find a patch that is not so well
developed.
Boil the pods in several changes of water to
which a little soda has been added. The soda will
help to break down any of the tough fibers which
may be present. We enjoy the pods. in several
ways. They are quite delicious just served up

u've never tried a wild food before, take a
t along on your Sunday drive this week. It
will only take a few minutes to gather up a
family sized portion if the pods are ready, and it
may just become one of your favourite delicacies
as well.

Pee weer win first
Another successful
week of ball has passed.
Monday night - the
Midget Boys "B" team
was ready and anxious to
play, but Varna failed to
show up. The "A's" sat
this week out also. Our
boys should be rested up.,
for this week. The Pee
Wee boys failed to show a
win as Benmiller
defeated the "A" team
and the "B" team lost
Londesboro.
Tuesday night the girls
had better luck, as the
Midgets downed Varna
at Holmesville while the
PeeWees were defeating
Varma "B" in Varna.
There were some happy
girls coming home as this
was their first win.
Wednesday night the
Tykes played host and
lost to Benmiller "B".
Remember play-offs
start next week so lets all
get out and cheer our kids
