Londesboro celebrates Manse's anniver

Former, ministers and
their families, along with
quite a number of
former residents of
Londesboro gathered
with the large number of
members of the
congregation on the
manse lawn for a
thanksgiving service as
the final activities of the
year celebrating the 100th
anniversary of the manse
at Londesboro.
• Many of the former
members that came back
for the occasion were
couples who were
married in the manse
over the years. Former
ministers and families
attending were: Rev.
and Mrs. Allen Gardiner
who served the charge
from 1932 to 1938; Mrs.
Stanley Brenton, wife of
Rev. Stanley Brenton of
Bothwell and their
daughter Mrs. Steven
(Sandra) Sainsbury of
Victoria B.C. , the
Brentons served the
Londesboro charge from
1947 to 1952; Mrs. J. T.
White and family from
Springfield, Ontario, the
late Rev. White served
the charge from 1953 to
1959; Rev. and Mrs. Mac
Carson and family from
Hamilton who served.
from 1963-65 and Rev. and
Mrs. Robert Tschanz of
Dunnville who served
from 1965 to 1968.
Other former residents
of the manse attending
were Miss Eleanore
Hudson from London who
lived here with. Aunt and
Uncle Rev. and Mrs.
Gardiner from 1932 to 1938
and Mrs.. Allen Shaddick
who had lived with Rev.
and Mrs. Menzies who
served Londesboro from
1938 to 1947.
Rev. McDonald, the
minister, conducted the
worship service with the
Snell family, Barb,
Bonnie, Rob and Betty
providing special music:
Mrs. McGregor was on
the organ and Glenn
McGregor provided
music on the Pipe's
during the offertory. Mrs.
Stanley Bren•tOn; who
along with her husband
had served the charge
from 1947-52 was guest
speaker. The ushers were
Bruce Hunking, Bob
Jamieson, Bruce Vincent
and Robert Hunking.
Following the service a
fellowship meal was held.
During the afternoon's
program Rev. McDonald
welcomed everyone and
gave an outline of the
anniversary activities
held during the past year.
Mrs. Lloyd Pipe gave a
history of the manse
ince its erection in 1878
nd told of some of the
haracteristics of the
uilding and a few
hanges that have been
jade during the 100
ears. All former
inisters and residents
f the manse spoke of
eir life and experiences
hen they lived in the
manse. This "time of
emembrance" proved
be a time of 'joy of
membering' for those

sang the very beautiful
"Bless This House".
'Those assisting with
the dinner and afternoon
were Mrs. Watson Reid,
Mrs. Vic Fox, Mrs.
Margaret Whyte, Mrs.
Les Reid, Mrs. Beth
Knox, Mrs. Harry Lear,
Mrs. Bert Shobbrook,
Mrs. Alice Davidson,
Mrs. Lloyd Pipe, Mr. and
Mrs. Murray •Howatt, Mr
and Mrs. Ron Groos, and
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lyon.
Brenda Millar with her
helpers were in charge of
the pre-school en-
tertainment and Susan
Jamieson and her helpers
were in charge of the six
to , eight years old. The
nine year old and up were
guests of Mr. and Mrs.
John Radford at their
pool, for swimming.
The flowers in the
manse were. provided by
Mrs. Bert Shobbrook and
Mrs. Lloyd Pipe and
other baskets were
placed in memory of
Warren Hulley.
Vacation Bible School
The Londesboro
Vacation Bible School
held their closing exer-
cises on Friday morning.
The 100 children who
attended the classes, with
their principal Rev. Stan
McDonald and Barbara
Bosman as song leader,
gathered for the event
along • with several
mothers and friends, who
viewed the children's
work and then met in the
church sap;ctuary ,for
entertainment.
Rev. McDonald
welcomed everyone and
introduced all the
teachers and their
helpers. Those helping
included: nursery
teacher, Dianne
Stevenson and helpers
Judy Jewitt, and Brenda
Millar; kindergarten
teacher, Sandra
Westerhout and helpers
Barbara Knox, Carol
Jewitt and Gloria
Adams; primary
teacher, Laura Scott and
helpers, Ruthann Pen -
found, Kathy Radford,
Pat Jewitt, Janet Susz;
intermediate teacher,
Barbara 'Bosman and
helpers Julie Snell,
Christine Carter and
Shirley Lyon.
A number of songs
concerning sunshine
were sung with Barbara
Bosman at the piano and
Barbara Stevenson
leading. Following that,
each class was presented
a musical number. The
kindergarten class did an
action song, the primary
group sang a hymn ac-
companied by Ruthann
Penfound and Janet Susz
on guitar. The nursery
department related the
Bible story of + the
shepherd, David.
Collection was received
by John Cartwright, Billy
Jewitt, Ronnie Vincent
and Larry Gross and
following the ceremony,
everyone was invited
downstairs for cookies
and Freshie,
Much, appreciation is
extended to the teachers
and leaders for con-
ducting such a fine school
for the young people of
Hullett.
Personals
The village was
shocked to learn of the
sudden death of Ervin
Johnston, who died ' on
Saturday evening at the
age of 42. Sympathy is
extended to his wife
Geraldine and family,
Glen, Linda and Karen
and his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Bob Johnston.
Sympathy is extended
to the family of Sibrand
Wilts who died on
Saturday at the age of 70.
Elgin Josling was
admitted to Clinton
Public Hospital on
Wednesday morning. On
Thursday, Mrs. Arie
Duizer 'was admitted to
the same. hospital. Both
patients are wished a
speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Johnston accompanied
by Mr. and Mrs. Peter
Roy, Clinton. motored to
Lake Tim igam i on
Saturday morning and
returnedhome early
Sunday evening due to
the sudden death of
Frank's brother, Ervin.
Visiting last week with
Jim Neilans were his
cousins, Miss Margaret
McGill and Mrs.
Annabelle McMullen
from Denver, Colorado.
Mac and Barbara
Carson, Craig and Fiona
of Dundas spent Saturday
night with Jack., and
Helen Lee. Neil Carson
came on Sunday and they
wet/4 guests. at .the 100th
anniversary of the
Londesboro Church
manse. Rev. Carson
preached at the United
Church from 1963-1965.
Bob and Ruth Tschanz,
Mark and Stephen of,
Dunnville spent Saturday •
with Ken and Betty
Hulley and their family.
They were also guests on
Sunday at the manse's
anniversary services.
Rev. Tschanz was the
minister there from 1965-
1968.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne
Jackson and family from
Ridgetown spent
Saturday night with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Allen and on Sunday
attended the Allen family
reunion in Exeter.
Sandra remained for a
week's visit with her
grandmother.
Mr. Tom Allen and
grandsons Donnie Allen,
Brian and Kenneth
Lackson are on a fishing
trip this week at Watch,
Quebec.
Cindy Swan of London
visited on the weekend
with her mother Beth
Knox.
Bruce Treble of
Colborne Township is
visiting with his cousin,
Kevin Radfordi
Mr. and Mrs. Colin
Paterson of London spent
the weekend with her
parents Mr. and Mrs. Bob
burns.

with her son Rev.
McDonald.

Holland picnic 'was held
on July 1 in Goderich
Harbour Park. Goderich
with 82 in attendance.
The three;;.. surviving
members of the Chas,and
George Holland families
who attended the first
picnic in 1928` which was
held in Bayfield were
honored; Mrs: Chas
Nelson (Viola Holland),
Mrs. Ervin Zinn
(Emmeline Holland) and
Mrs. Merrit Nediger
(Mary Holland).
After a spirited
renewal of acquaintances
with the relatives, from
Ottawa, Trenton, Lin-
dsay, London, Scar-
borough, Clinton,
Thedford, Lucknow,
Waterloo, Bayfield and
Goderich, some games
and contests were en-
joyed,
Many tried to name the
members who were The oldest married
represented in the couple present were Mr.

Wise won men's game and
Mary Clynick the ladies.
Special prize for a 50th
birthday this year went to
Mrs. Austin Nediger. The
prize' for biggest family
present went to Mr. and
Mrs. Clarke Zinn with six
children. The youngest
children were Darryl and
Darrick Wise, six-
month -old twin boys of
Doug and Janine Wise.

ball toss.

the picnic this year, were
most pleased with the
attendance for the special
event.
A large family tree had
been prepared for
display, " tracing the
lineage of the Holland
families, James Holland
came out from Oxford-
shire in 1812 and died in
Stanley Township in 1890.
His wife died in England,
before he came to
Canada, Their son
J epetha born in 1834 in
Cornwall, England, came
to Canada and married
Elizabeth Clark in 1860.
moving near Clinton,
where their son William
was born. George, Chas,
Tom, Effie, Annie, and
William were the
children.
George Holland
married Annie Lobb, and
had five girls and four
sons; Chas, Holland
married Clara Jervis,
and had five girls; Tom
Holland married Cecilia
Jervis and had one son;
William Holland married
Dorothy Donalson and
had one son and one
daughter; Effie Holland

married W r Geo. Vance
and had two sons and two
daughters; Annie
Holland married Henry
Walker and adopted
(Milton Vance) ; The Geo
and Chas. Holland,
families started a picnic -
in 1928 at Jowett's Grove
in Bayfield and have tried
to keep up the tradition of
friendship, May they long
continue to do so.
Plans were made to
have the picnic in Har-
bour Park Goderich on
Saturday June 30, 1979 at.
3 pm. The new com-
mittee is Mr. and Mrs.
Bert Hope of Lindsay,
and Mr. and Mrs. Murray
Hope of Trenton.
