Pickled hay now out
Proper field drying of
high quality early cut hay
is a major problem for
Ontario farmers. This
has prompted interest in
the use of acids to
preserve hay baled at
higher moisture levels.
According to Jack
Rodenburg, dairy cattle
specialist for the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture
and Food, research
results suggest this may
not be practical with the
products currently
available.
Mr. Rodenburg says an
application rate of 20
pounds of pure propionic
acid per ton of 30 percent
moisture hay or 10
pounds per ton of 25
percent moisture hay is
required to prevent
spoilage and heating.
Although adding acid at
this rate is effective, it is
costly, inconvenient and
highly corrosive to
haying equipment.
Mr. Rodenby g adds
that one product con-
taining 10 percent
propionic acid is ad-
vertised for use on 25
percent moisture hay at
two pounds per ton.
"This application rate
adds acid at 1 -50th the
rate recommended by
almost all of the research
work."
Good management of
the hay crop through
early cutting, minimal
raking and baling at 15 to
18 percent moisture is the
most practical way to
ensure good quality.
Farmers who wish to
reduce field drying time
should consider har-
vesting the hay crop at 55
to 65 percent moisture
hay silage.
