I did not mean "appeared" in the sense of "materialized" but after seeing his show I would not be surprised if that were how he makes his entrances. Mr. Mandel gave a sam- pling of his show to an assembled student body on Thursday afternoon. The audience, for that evening's two -and -a -half hour show was composed mainly of students. Mr. Mandel - his rapport was so informal that I'm going to refer to him as Mike - told that audience that they were seeing an abridged show; he regularly uses a fantastic set of a starship in which he takes people on interestellar mental trips. The set was built in Las Vegas, he said, at the cost of "arms and legs." Thursday's show, without the set, could hardly be described as mundane (go look it up). Mike dazzled the audience with card tricks, thought sending and "dermal optics" - that is, seeing with the skin of his fingers, Blindfolded, he held his hands about a foot apart while a volunteer held objects bet- ween them. Not only did he accurately describe each item, but between objects casually told another volunteer that she had a scar on her left knee. The second half of the show was even more amazing. The stage was filled with volunteers for his demon- stration of "mind -splitting". Mike soon narrowed the group down to about 20 who showed the best con- centration. By this time, he had succeeded in "splitting" the minds of volunteers into two parts, one of which he obviously controlled. He took the group on a roller coaster ride and a spectacular move; he gave them X-ray vision, and he made them put their shoes on the wrong foot and insist that they were right. Mike later told us that he accomplishes "mind - splitting" by making the volunteers concentrate on a smaller and smaller area of consciousness, until they are focused on one idea - and that idea is his to manipulate. After the show, Mike told us something about himself. He 'was born on April 29, 1953 in Manchester, England. He came to Canada when, he was 4 years old. As he told his audience, he spent seven years in high school, after which he worked for three years as a telephone operator. He discovered that he was often able to "guess" numbers before people asked for them. He began in earnest to develop his mental powers in November 1974 and became a full-time mentalist in January of 1975. Since then, Mike has toured Canada, playing universities, colleges, high schools etc. He recently hosted the Bit) Brady morning show on CFPL - Radio in London for two hours. He was able to do startling things with no more connection with his audience than the telephone; for example, he told one woman where to find some jewellery that she had lost. Mike is not exactly sure how this ability to receive mental images works; he says that sending, receiving, dermal optics and mind - splitting all use different capabilities. Mike does know that much depends on having the proper frame of mind. He emphasized the importance of being mentally "warmed up" before a show. I was very impressed by his show, Mandel has demonstrated some of the tremendous powers the mind possesses when it has reached a high level of awareness. As he told his audience, "You have to know your own thoughts so that you can recognize someone else's." Big Brother's report Only two items this week : the latest teacher's fad is recalling old test papers to check for possible defects? Honestly Mrs. J. do you think you're in the auto•business? There was a good bus trip down to Toronto for some lucky Spanish students. J.D. was seen to have hailed a taxi in To. for fun. Perhaps of J. could have stopped every taxi in metro if she'd have taken a hint from the Hardy Boys on TV the previous Sunday. What will work in Hong Kong might work better elsewhere. Just ask Annie!? Dear Annie: Jove only knows why I am writing you, but I think that I have a split personality. I woke up this morning and thought I saw a total stranger in the mirror. What's more, my pet hampster snarled at me when I sat down to break- fast. Normally he kisses me good morning. Should I see a doctor or give my hampster distemper shots? -Slightly Worried Dear Worried: I don't think your hampster has a problem as he is probably locked up in the house all day. Maybe you'd better see a psyk...asyk...a shrink. ,,AZic ENTER the HURON OLDS TYME FESTIVAL Fiddle, Stepdancing square dancing competition Over $1000 in Prizes and Trophies Friday, Saturday, June 2nd & 3rd 8 p.m. Memorial Hall, Blyth For tickets and entry forms call 523-9300 For The Best In SPRAYERS HAND AND BACK PACK contact: F& H Sales and Service R.R. 4 GODERICH PHONE 524-7474 (Located'/, miles east of llonmlller) Bonmiller Acres - John Hazlltt Dear Annie: We have a problem (don't we all). Well, actually it is our friend's problem, but she makes it ours because she keeps asking us for advice. Let's call my friend "Dee Dee", and her problem "George." Dee Dee is 15 and George is at least 18 years old. George has visited Dee Dee occasionally (when she has been alone). The clincher is that he tells her not to tell anyone that he has been to see her. He also makes a variety of "quick moves." He tells her (when they're alone) about how much he likes her and wants to take her out but he says he can't because of their age difference. She has heard that he still takes out various girls and that he only comes to see her to get a "piece of the action." Just for the record, he doesn't get it. We think she should tell him where to go. She has been very upset about all of this. What's your opinion? Thanks for listening. -Worried Friends P.S. George if you read this, think about it. Dear Stupid: Tell her to tell him to either make a commitment or to get lost. Annie Slanders. Smile Many people never know a dull moment — it's that way all the time. Mike Mandel performs a feat to the delight of the CHSS students. Mandel, "Canada's foremost mentalist" with the help of volunteers from the audience performed at CHSS last Thursday night. (News -Record photo) Normal abnormalities by Cathy Wooden Most parents insist that we students have it disgustingly easy. NOT SO! On top of that annoying work load we all try our best to ignore are the dumb and embarrassing situations that we get our- selves into. They can haunt the average adolescant mind forever - or at least a week, anyway. For example, have you ever walked into the wrong classroom by mistake? The pain is excruciating especially it it is 10 minutes into the period, you are in Grade 9 and the room is overflowing with Grade 12's. Thirty pairs of eyes burn holes into your Huckleberry Hound T-shirt as a wave of panic and nausea paralyzes you. Needless to say, you bolt for the door amid laughter and cat calls, dropping three textbooks and a sweat sock from your gym bag. Also cause for great dismay is falling up the stairs during rush hour traffic. Despite the fact that your elbow is throbbing, your ankle feels like it has been run over by a Mack truck, and three months worth- of Science notes are in a puddle of chocolate milk, you make a terrific recovery - just in time to see your little brother running nimbly by, chanting "Klutz!" Have you ever, waited 15 minutes in the hot line, finally gotten your french fries, apple, and milk only to discover that you don't have enough money to pay for it? Did you ever come to school wearing different colored socks? Did you ever spill ketchup all over yourself at lunch? Then there are the private embarrassments that only you know about, but tend to lower your self-esteem 'anyway. For instance, how many of you didn't recognize the diagram of your reproductive parts in health class? • I'll bet that everybody has experienced trying to push open a corridor door that says, "PULL". Producer egg price rises The National Farm Products Marketing Council (N_F.P.M.C.) approved a$.02 increase in the producer price for one dozen Grade A Large size eggs, effective May, 1978. This change is primarily a result of rising feed costs. which increased $6.09 per tonne, rising from a national weighted average of 5168.05 per tonne in April, 1978 to $174.14 in May, 1978. The N.F.P.M.C. in supervising the activities of the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency, monitors monthly and quarterly revisions to the C_O_P_ formula to ensure the formula accurately reflects costs incurred by egg producers_ The formula includes a producer return •component which. in adherence to Anti - Inflation guidelines, has been held constant at 51.95 per dozen since April 13. 1977..
