possible to estimate the benefits which ._...
their action has conferred on this country,
and it would have been to the last degree
shameful and disgraceful had the bond
they relied upon been broken by the re-
presentatives of the Canadian people.
The agreement to preserve the Canadian
trade to the C. P. R. as an inducement to
capitalists so become stockholders was of
the most binding kind, andwereittobeab-
rogated, as our opponentslseek to do, the
country would be undoubtedly called upon
to make a compensation to an immense
amount. It is not singular that the very Robt. Soilley, 11.00 feet plank,.Div.1, $13.75;
people who are decrying the expense that "Free Press" advs. Court of Revision, $1.10;

should now advocate a course which Semi. Hicks rep. culvert, W. 33„ $3,50; Les-
Biddulph Council.
A special meeting of the Biddulph town-
ship council was held in the Court Room,
Clandeboye, May, 30th 1887. ' On motion
orders were drawn for the following am'ts
Wm. Johnson rep. culveit, Div. 4, 50cts.; T.
Mackay, rep. bridge, Div. 4, C. S. R., $1 ; J.
Kent, rep. bridge, Div. 4. 25cts. ; J. Lewis,

might involve .us in a suit for damages, in
answer to which a verdict of
$50,000,000 in favor of the company
might not be deemed extravagant. Of
course, any payment that might have to
be paid on such account would come out
of the pockets of the people of the older
Provinces, just as the moneys already
paid out of the Dominion exchequer on
account of the C. P. R. construction have
done. But the Reform interest in Mani-
toba—supported for party purposes by D.
Milts and Co.—care not one jot for that.
They would rather like to see something
of that kind brought about, in order to
have a fling in their usual style. The
good sense and honest feeling of the Con-
servative section in Parliament has placed
the stamp of disapproval on the scheme.
They have decreed fair play to the older
Provinces while keeping good faith with
the stockholders, who relied upon the pro-
bity of Canada as a whole. To have re-
pudiated our obligations in respect of the
C. P. R. would have been at once suicci-
dal and scandalous.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
A nu.L introduced by Hon. Mr. Thomp-
son, Minister of Justice, providing that
the Dominion voters' lists now in force
under the electoral Franchise Act shall
remain in force until 1888. Should the
bill pass as introduced, there will be no
revision of the Dominion voters' lists this
year. Mr. Mills gave notice that the op-
position would contest the proposal, on
the ground that the continuance of the
present lists would give the Government
an undue advantage in the bye -elections.
