Yet wood louver closet doors are a quick, easy and affordable way to enliven the looks of any area—from casual kitchen to luxurious living room. What makes louver doors decorative is their slats. Or- dinary flush doors are bland, but wood slats create a rich- ness of detail that raises closets above the utilitarian class. At the same time, louver doors let closets do a better storage job. The open -slat design allows ventilation of the closet interior. Air flow helps keep what's in the closet fresh and dry which, in turn, eliminates musty odors and prevents mildew. Wood louvers enhance a closet's use and beauty in other ways as well. Because they are available in folding or sliding styles—which require little or no floor clearance— louver doors permit closet installation in places too nar- row for an outward -swinging door. Handy storage thus be- comes possible in foyers, hallways and small baths. Because wood takes any finish with ease, louver doors can be painted any color, or stained to emphasize the nat- ural color and design of the grain. Folding and sliding styles can be purchased either fully -louvered, or with louvers in the top half and deeply -sculptured closed wood panels at the bottom. Louver doors, together with tracks, hardware and in- stallation instructions, can be obtained at local lumber dealers and building supply stores. They can usually be installed by do-it- yourselfers. The doors can be used as single units or in series. In fact, a wall -long sweep of closets with louver doors provides a hard -to -beat double -feature: an abun- dance of storage space and a dramatic visual highlight for any room or corridor. Basic energy terminology • BTU (British -thermal Unit)—The amount of heat required to raise the tempera- ture of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. In homeowner's terms, BTU's are used to describe the ca- pacity of both heating and cooling equipment and are expressed in the number of BTU's per hour. • Degree Day—The nu- merical difference between the average temperature for a particular region and 65 de- grees as the measure of cold- ness during a heating season. If the average temperature for the day is 30 degrees, for example, the Degree Day for that particular day is 65 minus 30, or 35. The more Degree Days per year, the higher the annual fuel bill. • "R-Value"—The mea- sure of a material's resis- tance to heat flow. This is how the efficiency of insula- tion is measured. The higher the R -Value, the more effec- tive the insulation. It's been estimated that a fully - insulated home can reduce by 50 percent the amount of fuel required to heat a home.
