Skin is sof- ter, hair more alive and agleam. Gone forever is that grimy hard water ring -around -the -tub and those tacky film deposits that roughen skin and make hair dull. A new roof gives home 'curb appeal' Ever think about what people notice when ap- proaching or driving past your house? Look around the next time you're driving through a neighborhood and you'll spot it immediately. It's the roof. Despite the fact that the roof plays a major role in the entire appearance of a home, many peoPl, all but ignore the decorative effect a roof can play in giving a house "curb appeal." Yet when the time comes for replacement, many homeowners ignore the aes- thetic aspects of reroofing. The Asphalt Roofing Man- ufacturers Association points out that the color is important. A white or light- colored roof, for instance, adds height and dimension to a small, low house. A sloped dark roof, on the other hand, diminishes the size of a.large, steeply sloped roof. Increasingly popular are asphalt shingles in earthtone shades of greens and browns, that can be used to blend the overall color scheme of a home with the siding colors. The' variety of earthtone shades in asphalt shingles helps to avoid a roof that looks like all the others in the neighborhood. Three-dimensional asphalt shingles in a handsome earth - tone shade produce a roof with deep, attractive shadowlines that create an image of depth and rugged- ness. Let Your Imagination Soar If the condition of your home tells you it's time to redecorate but your checkbook says no, don't despair, you can still spruce up your domestic surroundings without expensive refurnishing. Leading wallcovering manufac- turers offer a big assist to the home decorator who wants the latest fashionable backgrounds for his or her walls. These fine wallcoverings can be scrubbed and stripped (many of them prepasted) and have coor- dinated fabrics which can be u§ed in many ways to dramatize a room. Canapies, window curtains, quilts, coverlets, pillowcases, dust ruffles, side chairs and window shades are among the coordinating possibilities. Bedrooms should be decorated to suit the personality of the male or female, or both, who are using the rooms. Paper preparation of the walls and woodwork is extremely important when redecorating - i.e,., removal of old wallcovering, repairing cracks and imperfections in plaster or wallboard. A coat of alkyd flat is recommended to ensure sticking and prevent any bleeding through old stains. Always use the paste and the method of application that is recommended inside every roll of wallcovering. Old and difficult ceilings can be renewed by having a coat of texture sprayed on to hide any cracks or imperfections. If you prefer to paint your walls, easily done. Use a color that coor- dinates with your carpets or existing furniture, or choose a neutral "eggshell" or "ivory" shade. Stay away from pure white which tends to look grey on walls. Is your furniture looking tired and faded? Then have it covered with fabric that matches or coordinates with the wall -covering or drapery. Rearrange your furnishings, even move some to other rooms. You'll find that many pieces look good in dif- ferent areas of the house. Subtle changes in a room's appearance can be achieved as simply as switching lamps, art and accessories between livingroom and bedroom. By moving items from room to room, you gain the benefits or refurnishing without spending a penny. Bathrooms and kitchens are two very important rooms in a home. One should choose good quality appliances and fixtures and make sure there are no shortcuts taken in wiring or plumbing when installation or remodelling is done. Homeowners should use good quality wallcoverings and paints for these much used areas. Much thought must also be given to mirrors, lighting and floor covering. Again these should be good quality, func- tional and easy to maintain.
