convinced of the error of their ways.
Kirkton.
Barmer.--Business commences' at the new
creamery this week. --Mr. Hawkey is
now landlord of the Kirkton hotel. We
understand that license has been granted. -
111r. Somerville has sold his house and lot to
Mr. David Mahon, for $700. He has pur-
chased a number of lots on the opposite side
of the street from Mr. 8. Doupe, and has
announced the erection of a new fmme
house. -The 24th passed off very quietly as
usual ; most of the people attended the S.
S. anniversary at Woodham. Those who
did so were not disappointed as were some
who went a greater distance. Those who
attended the sports at Exeter, report having
had a good time. -Rev. Mr. Boyd, of Tor-
onto, preached in the Methodist church on
Sunday morning last, and Rev. Mr. Martin,
of Exeter, in the Presbyterian chureh in the
afternoon. -The annual strawberry festival
of the MethocVst Sunday school will be held
on Dominion Day as usual. -Mr. Cornell.
Switzer goes to conference this week, as
'lay delegate for the Kirkton circuit. -A
very interesting missionary meethet; was
held in 'the Presbyterian church on Thurs-
day night of last week. The speakers were
two students of Knox College, Messrs.
Webster and Goforth, who intend to out as
missionaries on their graduation. A 'union
picnic of tbe Exeter. St. Marys and Kirk -
ton Councils of Royal Templars and the
Avonbank Division S. of T., will be held in
Mr. Alex. Kick's grove, irkton. on Friday,
10th of Jane, commencing at 000n. Fine
addresses and a good social time may be
expected.

Buites.-Our town presented quite an
animated appearance on24th, as the major-
ity of young as well az old were opt for a
holiday. :A, number were in Exeter to wit-
ness the grand Jubilee Celebration, while
others attended the Bronson Line school pic-
nic, (Miss Murray, teacher,) at the Grand
Bend, and by all accounts the picnic was a
grand succese. The trustees of B. L. school
I may congratulate themselves on having
a teacher who looks after the progress as
well as pleasure of the sehelars.-A valuable
horse belonging .to Happle, Esq. died
suddenly the other clay --M1'. John
who was appointed delegate to Otta-
wa by the Railway Cemmittee is home
again. .Although no definite conclusion has
been arrived at as yet Zurich will see the
day that her citizens can boast of a line run-
ning through, and we have Tar

to believe that that clay is not far distant.

Crediton,
Baum.-Mossrs, Lewis, Zwiker and
Jory, with others and families held a
pierne at the Bend on Monday. They
report having had a good time. -Our
obliging and energetic livery -keeper and
mail carrier, has pet a new and handsome
'bus on the road between this village and
Centralia. It is well Made, and was built
by Mr. W. Buckingham, of the village. -
Wm. Mitchell, who keeps a temperance
house hi this place, having discovered by
experience that catering pop and ginger
ale does not pav, has turned his attention
towards lamb buying. -.If eggs are down
in Exeter they are up in Orediton ; or at
least one of our worthy citizens is u rider
that impression. -Business at present is
fair, notwithstanding, some of our citizens
grumble slightly. -Our young friend, Mr.
Sam. Eilber, has in She course of erection
what will be a handsome brick residence.

DEATH or AN OLD Calms :-When Mr.
Peter Margach's son returned froni his
work on. Monday evening, 16611 ult., he
foend his father lying on the floor speech-
less and paralyzed in his right side. He
never rallied, and died on Monday last.
Mr. Margach's wife died several years ago
and father and son lived together.
BASEBALL AND A BAD ACCIDENT. -The
Russelldale club had a match with the
Motherwell club on Saturday last, being
determined to regain the laurels they lost
last year, but after two or three innings
the game was brought to a close by a very
serious accident that happened to one of
the Motherwell club. J. Bothwell and
C. Oliver were after the ball. They were
running in opposite directions, when a
collision took place. Bothwell Caine tilt
against Oliver, The shock WAS so great
that Oliver fall to the ground unconscious,
bleeding; Profusely. 'Tie was carried into,
Pottipiece's house, and a doctor sent for.
It was sometime before be become con-
scious. The doctor visited him again on
Rambler,
BRIERS. -The fourth quarterly meeting
of the Centudia Circuit was hold on the
eve of the Oth of May. Mr. K. Hicks
was appointed as delegate to attend the
Conference which is to be held at Sarnia;
also the Rev. E. Kershaw received an in-
vitation to remain on the circuit for the
ensuing year. -Mr. Jas. Snell had a horse
die a few days ago. -Diphtheria is raging
among some families in the Township of
Stephen. -Sheep shearing has commenc-
ed ; some old sheep who have been. ac-
tuated by the suggestion given by one of
your correspondents some time age, have
had their fleece taken off. They must
feel somewhat lighter noao-It is corn-
monlyreported that MatKella,nd, the hotel -
keeper of Devon, has become an escapade.
It is thought that he has gone to the far
North-west. The reasons for Mat's flight
are best known to himself. -The Low -
holders of Stephen consider themselves
very fortunate this yea,r having a grand
prospect of an abundant yield of fall
wheat. Their wheat is far superior , to
that of the farmers living on the front of
the Township, some of whom have been
necessitated to plough up portions of their
fields and scatter some spring grain there-
on. -We are sorry to report the death o
Carpus Noble, youngest son of Daimmitt
Florence French, of Centralia, aged 7
years, 3 months and 14 days. He was a
. bright and promising boy:, and will be
Sabbath when he was taken home and is missed for some time by lns parents and
now getting all right.

The council met as a Court of Revision
and appeal on Thursday, May 266h. The
members all preseat. The appeal of T.
Flaberer, in. respect to personal property, was
eousidered and his assesement reduced $100.
The following changes were made in the
Resident Roll :-Part of lot 24, N. B:, was
taken from W. Irvine and charged to W.
Agnew; J. Breunerman was assessed for
part of the same lot instead of W. Agnew;
lot 21, N. B., was charged to J. Thompson.

ed except by the voice of the people, and
having been repealed., is not in fore until it
has been again voted upon. The poiet will
