Seniors attend spring rally
Some 134 members of the
United Senior Citiz
Ontari
ns of
(USCO) met in
Exeter Legion Hall on April
12 for the Zone 8 spring rally.
The Exeter Senior Citizens
Club hosted the event. Harry
Baker of Bayfield, the vice-
president of Zone 8, called the
meeting to order. Rev. Glen
Wright of Exeter United
Church conducted the
opening devotions and
Exeter's mayor Bruce Shaw
welcomed everyone present.
Mr. Baker then introduced
Howard Latsch of Palmer-
ston, field representative for
Webster, Ontario who spoke
on seniors. Mrs. Lucy Tur-
nbull, recording secretary for
the USCO in Toronto gave an
inspirational and informative
talk.
Mrs. Zerbock of Stratford,
who is on the executive for the
USCO organized Zone 8 two
years ago. She spoke briefly
on her work throughout
Ontario and gave gifts to the
oldest
ady present,Mrs. Ada
Wilson of Grand Bend and
Mrs. Glenn of Seaforth, both
86 years old and to the oldest
man present, Mr. White of
Seaforth who is 85. Also gifts
were given to the longest
married couples who were
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Snyder of
Goderich and Mr. and Mrs.
Steeper of Exeter, both
married 60 years. The newest
married couple was Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Baker of Bayfield
who have been married for
five years and the nearest
birthday was Howard Latsch
on April 12.
Following a box lunch,
president Mary Grigg opened
the afternoon session with a
few words of welcome and
appreciation to Mr. Baker for
taking over her duties. Mrs.
Grigg then introduced Mr. E.
T. Smith from Toronto who
conducted an election of
officers for a two year term.

Sorority plan sale
A delicious catered dinner
began the April 11th meeting
of Xi Epsilon Beta Chapter of
Beta Sigma Phi at the home
of Brenda Rutledge.
During the business
meeting that followed,
president Lois Fitzgerald
read a letter from Pat Spence
regarding Founder's Day
which will be held at the
White Carnation April 25 at
6:30. Marilyn James offered
to make a jute hanger as a
draw prize.
Audrey Kemp read a letter
from the Women's Auxiliary
to Clinton Public Hospital
inviting members to attend
Hospital Day, May 10th.
Betty Jo read a letter from
Goderich and District
Association for the Mentally
Handicapped inviting
members to a shower and
Open House for the Group
Home.
Vice president Brenda
Rutledge reported that the
Girl Guides would like a
member to speak to them
about Sorority. Lois Fit-
zgerald and Audrey Kemp
will go.
The social committee
reported that the Stral;fora.
Theatre booking has been
changed to May 31st.
Ways and means chairman,
Linda Meade, reminded
members of the bake sale and
garage sale April 22, from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m.
Vivienne Roy reported for
Service that the daffodil sale
raised $1,208.00 for the
Cancer Society. She thanked
all those who helped by
selling or buying the flowers.
Vivienne also read a letter
from the Arthritis Society
telling of their annual
meeting in Walkerton to
nominate a new regional
chairman.
Following the business
meeting, Lois Fitzgerald
presented a thought-
provoking program on mixed
marriages inspired by a
recent article in Chatelaine
magazine, on Jews and
Gentiles marrying. Members
discussed problems and
benefits of such marriages.
The next meeting will be
Founder's Day at the White
Carnation, April 25.

Zone 8 is composed of 11
clubs and Mr. Baker asked a
representative from each
club to give a resume of the
activities and achievements
of his or her respective group.
Those reporting were from
,Goderich, Exeter, Brussels,
Bayfield, Clinton, Grand
Bend, Seaforth, Hensall,
Zurich and Dashwood. No one
was present from the Blyth
club.
Mr. E. T. Smith the
president of the USCO from
Toronto was the special guest
speaker for the afternoon. He
spoke on the work of the
organization and the efforts
on behalf of the senior
citizens of Ontario. The
Ontario convention will be
held in Kingston in August
and the national convention
will be held in September in
Vancouver.
A short program followed
by musicians from Seaforth
and Exeter and reading by
Mrs. Taylor of Grand Bend.
Leona Lockhart then thanked
the people of Exeter for the
use of their hall, the ladies for
coffee and cookies, the
minister, the mayor, all the
speakers and all the others
who contributed to the suc-
cess of the rally.
Family workshops set
A one -day workshop for
community workers and
professionals dealing with the
problems faced by parents
will be held in Goderich on
May 3. It will begin at 9 a.m.
at the Conference Room of
the Family and Children's
Services, 46 Gloucester
Terrace.
Dr. David Link,
psychologist consultant to
children's aid services in
Ontario will be the keynote
speaker on "Parenting." His
address ,will be followed by,
small goup sessions where
three practical approaches
will be applied to specific
problems.
The focus of the workshop
will be on problems parents
encounter with young
children (under the age of
10) , and on helping parents
cope with family conflict.

sessions will be J.V. Penn and
R. Boonstra of the Huron
County family and children's
services and Anthony Miller,
psychologist, Huron County
centre for children and youth,

The first April meeting of
Clinton Zeta Omega Chapter
8265 of the Beta Sigma Phi
Sorority was held at the home
of Janice Snell on April 11.
Plans were discussed for
Wounder's Day, which is to
ake -p1aCe-on Aprf125-at-the
White Carnation in
Holmesville.
An invitation was received
from the Women's Hospital
Auxiliary to visit the hospital
on Hospital Day, May 10.
Plans were discussed for a
social in May at Rose
Cooke's. This will be a bar-
becue.
A committee was formed to
plan the decoration of the
Children's Ward at the
Hospital. It was decided to
replace the drapes and to
paint Disneyland characters
on the walls.

an interesting program on
"Behavior Modification in
Adults." Group members
learned how to relax so well,
there should be no problems
in getting to sleep on Tuesday
nights from now on.
ordinator will be Prof.
Margaret McKim, depart-
ment of family studies,
University of Guelph.
The workshop will offer
community workers and
professionals an opportunity
to discuss mutual problems
and develop skills. It is in-
tended for youth group
leaders and many other
volunteer community leaders
who come in contact with
families and family -related
prolems, as well as
pro essional and
paraprofessional workers in"
these areas.
This will be the first of a
series of three workshops.
The others, dealing with
financial counselling and
nutrition education, will be
'held on May 17 and May 31.
All three workshops will be
spo lsored jointly by: Huron
County Family and
Children's Services, Huron
County Health Unit, The
University of Guelph's Rural
Development Outreach
Project, the Ontario Ministry
of Community and Social
Services, and the department
of family studies at the
University of Guelph.
'the fee for each day -long
session is $15.00, and this
includes lunch and coffee

4HAchievement Days set
The 4-H Homemaking
Achievement Days for
"Focus on Living" represent
the end of another
homemaking unit presented
by the home economics
branch of Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food in co-
operation with local county
leaders.
The club, "Focus on
Living" included a wide
range of topics. Some of the
topics in this club were:- it's
your life; learning through
leisure; people, ideas and
laws; who cares about our
environment; safety;
emergency first aid and
babysitting; food and fitness;
creative use of leisure.
The club members were
able to do quilting, knitting
and crocheting., This club also
helped the girls to become
more aware of the com-
munity and environment.

ternoon program. Members
will have project books, and
handcrafted items will be on
display. The highlight of the
program; however, will be a
series of skits and exhibits
presented as a club effort by
all participating groups.
These performances are an
entertaining and educational
summary of the whole
project.
At the conclusion of the
program, special awards and
certificates are presented to
members who have
satisfactorily completed
required 4-H homemaking
units.
Everyone is invited. Your
presence in the audience
would be a most welcome
sign. As you gain valuable
information pertaining to
"Focus on Living" your
young people will gain con-
fidence in their abilities to
make presentations before an
interested audience. Your
support is a valuable con-
tribution to the continuation
of a strong 4-H program in
Huron County. Plan to attend
the Achievement Day in ydur
area.
Missions is theme for UCS meeting
The afternoon unit of the,.
Ontario Street United Church'
Women met in the church
parlor on the afternoon of
Tuesday, April 4 with Mrs.
Marion Powell the leader in
the chair. She opened the
meeting with a reading.
The devotional exercises
were in charge of Mrs. Ruby
Webster, Mrs. Amber Popp
and Mrs. Doreen Pick, the
latter giving comments on the
lesson.
As "World Outreach"
chairman of the UCW, Mrs.
Pick told what the United
Church is doing in three of the
islands in the Caribbean,
namely Haiti, Jamaica, and
Grand Cayman. Mission work
in the Caribbean goes as far
back as 1868 in the island of
Trinidad,' The work is now
organized by the Caribbean
Conference of Churches an
ecumenical organization,
who are introducing a new
kind of Christian develop-
ment in the islands. Churches
in North America assist by
providing missionaries and
money for the work carried
on in the Caribbean.

members reported 39 hospital
and 15 home calls made
during the month. Members
will attend Thankoffering
meetings at both the Auburn
and Blyth United churches on
April 9. The joint Thankof-
fering meeting of the Wesley -
Willis and Ontario Street
churches will be held in the
Ontario Street church on
Sunday evening April 30, at 8
p.m.
A meeting of the excutive of
the Huron -Perth UCW
presbyterial will be held in
the Milverton church hall on
April 18 at 7 p.m. The unit
members decided to make a
quilt, with materials to be
brought to the next regular
meeting. Plans were made to
hold a "Coffee Party" in the
church parlor on the morning
of May 18th, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Meeting adjourned and
lunch was served by Kathleen
Elliott and her group.

News of Huronview
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ver-
steegden of Parkhill attended
the Sunday Chapel Service at
Huronview and were present
for the Dedication of the
Cross they had given to
Huronview and placed in the
Chapel. Mr. Chester
Archibald, Administrator,
accepted the gift on behalf of
the Home and Huronview
Chaplain, The Reverend W.
H. McWhinnie, conducted the
service. Douglas Crich was
organist and accompanied
Elsie Henderson and Nelson
Lear with a vocal duet.

view on Monday. The Clinton
