work could be incorporated
with that of grown-ups.
Mr. Struik gave some
suggestions and concluded by
urging everyone to be aware
of the .pressures upon our-
selves and our children. He
suggested that we begin to
conquer these. pressures by
trying first of all to eradicate
their root cause in ourselves
and in our children and then
to deal wisely with the
problems that remain_
After 2 lively question
periods, Mr. Struik was
thanked. Coffee and cake
were served, and a short
business meeting took place.
Minutes of the previous
meeting were read by Mrs.
Margorie Ridder and the
treasurer Mrs. Lena

Strike one, strike two...we're back in school
by Ken McBride
The strike is over, but it
was fun while it lasted_
Things sure got shook up in
a county whose idea of ex-
citement is the Zurich Bean
Festival. For instance, how
many times are you going to
see a bunch of students on
school grounds doing
anything but goofing off?
As you know, one day in the
middle of the strike was
designated as a day of
protest. Industrious little
sign -painters got up early
(noon) and marched in front
of CHSS, looking almost as
silly as the teachers who had
marched before them.
I was more inclined to walk
up to the board office and
scream, "Nazis ! ! ", but I
thought Netter of it
1 have nothing against the
board, you understand_ I
mean, how were they to know
that when they sat down to a
serious, mediated bargaining
session with the teachers,
they wouldn't have a leg to
stand on? The fellow they
hired as chairman of their
negotiating committee had
assured them they were in the
right_
But it turns out that the
teachers' workload clause
will stay, whether the board
likes it or not. Otherwise, the
whole contract will 1* subject
to arbitration_ Arbitration is
the term they use in
parliament to replace
"eenee-meenee-m inee-mo".
The teachers certainly had
good reason to try to keep the
workload clause in their
Contract_ 1 tte) Met: w that if
the board deprived them of
that, soon the "pupil -teacher -
ratio" would go out the
window as well_ Next thing
you know they'd be building
double-decker classrooms
with 200 desks, or class -to -
class shuttlecraft so a teacher
could cram five or six lessons
in the same period.
The teachers call that the
"domino theory". Aren't they
original?
When the chairman of the
board's negotiating com-
mittee said that our
educations were being
"dispensed with" (I didn't
make that up), I was mildly
amused, with accompanying
delusions of being inside a
garbage can_
I wasn't upset, and I'm still
Big Brother is back on the job
Well finally we're back to
normal and you the student
body are continuing in your
silly offbeat habits that
you've picked up in your long
"holiday."
For example just the other
day J.M. otherwise known
"Fang's girl" was seen in the
cafeteria with one boot and
one short sock with a red bow
on it. Really. J.. I know it's
hard to give up the sloppy
dress habits you picked up
while you were laying around
home all that time, but just
think how embarrassed Fang
is going to be when he hears
this.
J.S_ has also been con-
tinuing her evil ways
especially when I caught her
giving her "cherry" to E.M.
in the Queens on Saturday
night. Fortunately, your
cherry was on the swizzle
stick, J.. or just think what
people might be thinking
about you.

April 21
On Calendar
C_W_ and LW are up to
their old tricks again. Just the
other day I caught them in a
rousing chorus) of their
favourite country and
western songs_
Unfortunately due to the
strike I've lost my main
victims- From this day forth
the initial S.D., who's
destroying a Guelph area,
and S.M. is o's sliding around
Saunders i London. will not
appear again_ However, this
doesn't mean I'm giving up
not upset, even as rumours of
extension of the school year to
June 28th make the rounds.
But "looking down the road",
as the board always says, I
see some people who may be
committed to summer jobs
which start early in June. I
guess they can always drop
out.
I am not convinced that the
"annual ritual". as the
teachers describe contract
negotiations, will not result in
future strikes.
That doesn't say much for
either the teachers or the
board, or even the system (or
absence of it) under which
they "negotiated".
Having my education
temporarily flushed down the
can was, for me, a pretty fair
lesson in itself. I only hope
that no one will be a loser as a
result of the type of ex-
perience we have had.
Nitpicking. anyone?

Subject to change
When we read about someone
being arrested for disturbing
the peace, we can't help
wondering where he found
any.
It will pay bargain
conscious shoppers to
circle Friday, April
21st, on their calen-
dar.
This is the day of
the second
"Moonlight Madness"
event in Exeter, an
event that proved ex-
tremely popular with
literally thousands of
bargain hunters last
fall.
Nearly all of the
stores in the core area
of Exeter will remain
open until midnight
and will be featuring
values tempting
enough to draw
customers from
several miles away.
During the last mid-
night madness sale
shoppers poured into
town from Goderich,
Clinton, Seaforth,
Zurich, St. Marys,
Ailsa Craig, Parkhill,
Strathroy, etc. Nearly
all the comments
heard from the'
shoppers was that
they enjoyed the
shopping spree, es-
pecially the hundreds
of super bargains that
were offered by Ex-
eter's friendly stores.
The only problem
experienced by
shoppers at the last
event was that they
had to wait quite a
while at some of the
stores to get checked
through the cash
registers. This was
because of the unex-
pected large number
of shoppers that turn-
ed out for the event.
This time the
merchants are
prepared for a sudden
rush of customers
beginning at 6 p.m.
and lasting right
through until mid-
night.
The "Moonlight
Madness" promotion
is just one of several
shopping events that
will be sponsored by
the Exeter Mainway
area this year. The
idea is to let shoppers
everywhere know
that the Exeter
merchants certainly
are friendly and will
do all they can to at-
tract your business.
So, no matter
where you live, if you
can possibly get to Ex-
eter on Friday, April
21, between 6 p.m.
and midnight, you
won't regret the drive.
There's super
values in every store
just waiting for you.
