R. F. Gomme, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food hor- ticulturist, says it is easy to take -cuttings from over wintered geraniums and replenish your supply for this year's garden. The traditional method of overwintering geraniums hang the plants in a cool, dark place in the fall. In early spring the plants were potted, watered and cut back. After the new growth began, the plants were replanted in the garden. Mr. Gomme says a more vigorous plant can be produced by taking cuttings from these over -wintered plants - He suggests watering the old plants and, when new shoots grow, taking cuttings about six inches long. Remove the lower leaves from the cutting and dip the end in a fungicide such as Captan. Plant the cuttings about two inches deep and two inches apart in a six-inch flower pot. Mr. Gomme advises using a soil mixture of coarse sand mixed with peat moss or vermiculite. Water the soil mixture thoroughly and place the con- tainer in a clear plastic bag under a lighting unit, or in a window protected from direct sunlight. Once the cuttings have rooted, apply a weak fertilizer. The cuttings should be ready for transplanting- in about one month. Geraniums can also be grown from seed. However, if you have a strain of geranium you like, cuttings are best. Geraniums are available in a range of colors including the ever -popular red, pink and white. They are attractive in patio pots, or window boxes. Complete flower guide for .your garden FLOWERS 0 AGERATUM * ALYSSUM USE Low edging, Mass bedding, Rock garden, Cut flower, Continual bloom. Protect plants for Winter. Keep your "green thumb" connected to your hand Yes - Spring is finally here! And those of you who possess "green thumbs" (and even those of you who don't) will soon be spending much of your spare time in the garden deciding where you're going to plant the petunias and making sure your lawn and hedges look respec- table. When you do, remember that a garden - like any other work area - has the potential for serious injury. That's why St. John Ambulance is suggesting these guidelines for gardening safety: + Keep your work area clean and tidy. + Don't use electrical ap- pliances in a wet or damp area. + Store your power garden tools in a high and dry place. + Never force a tool to work faster than the speed for which it was designed or do a job other than the one it was intended for. + Don't carry an appliance by the cord, and never yank the cord when removing it from a receptacle: grasp the plug, not the wire. Keep the cord away' from sharp edges, oil and heat. + Keep your appliances sharp and clean for best and safest performance. Disconnect an appliance before servicing, changing accessories, or lubricating. Follow the manufacturer's directions for servicing the appliance. + Don't wear loose clothing or jewelry when operating power tools. Never operate a lawn mower in bare feet. + Keep proper footing and balance at all times - don't overreach. b + Keep children a safe distance away from your work area. + Rake the lawn before operating a lawn mower to remove any objects hidden in the grass.' :Such objects could seriously injure someone if they should fly out of the machine. + Use equipment with the stamp of approval of the Canadian Standards Association. A "green thumb" is rather nice to have - especially when it remains connected to your hand. Take a tip from St. John Ambulance and play it safe this ;Spring when you do your weekend gardening' PATCHING. Even for Just patching bare spots on your lawn, use a high quality seed. It should consist of permanent, attractive varieties free from haygrass inclusions. ,GREEN THUMBS UP FOR THESE See us first...We're out in front again with the lowest prices in town...on lawn & garden fertilizer.
