Naturally speaking
By Steve Cooke
Spring has arrived, the snow is melting and the smelt
will soon be running. Now is the time to break out that old
net and do any repairing that is necessary. It is also a
good time to obtain a summary of the fishing regulations.
Smelt may be taken during the months of March, April
and May in this area by using nets. Dip nets must not
measure more than six feet square or, if round, six feet in
diameter. Seine nets under 30 feet require a licence
available at some sporting goods stores, or at the
ministry of natural resources for the fee of $1. .
There is no size limit or bag limit on smelt, but it is a
crime to waste any edible fish. This is not only a moral
crime, but is spelled out in the Game and Fish act as
follows: "Any fish which is suitable for food must not be
destroyed or permitted to spoil." The only word of
caution is that smelt, being a fatty fish, are more prone to
accumulations of contaminants than are some others.
This, however, is more of a problem in Lake Ontario than
in Lake Huron.
There is one more warning that should be issued to
smelt fishermen. Rainbow trout also make their
spawning run at the same time as smelt, and often find
their way into nets.
It is definitely illegal to capture and keep any gamefish
caught in this manner and anyone caught doing so is
liable to fines up to 81000 and jail sentences.
The ministry of natural resources has been aware of
many violations in the past and this year is taking a
very hard line on violations. It's a good thing too. Due to
extensive management programs, several species of fish
are making a comeback and new species have been in-
troduced.
I, for one, would like to see these fish around for a long
time to come, even if they do occasionally mess up my
smelt fishing.
